Play OS X Audio Instantly, Free

Tom Erbe of Soundhack fame has finally brought his old Mac utility Instant Player to OS X. (download the beta from his freeware
page) Option-click a sound in the Finder, and it plays instantly — no
mucking about in the multi-column view required. Insanely cool for
quick sound browsing, so give it a shot!

Updated: Works like a charm for me, though only for WAV/AIFF
files (MP3 is supposedly supported too but for some reason wasn't
working for me — maybe encoding reasons — though WAV/AIFF is my
primary need!)

PC users — I'm not discriminating here; I just haven't found as many cool Windows toys — got em? Send em!

    Awesome. This will truly be a timesaver – and maybe even money saver. I may not need to get a dedicated sample manager any longer!

    I've been using TaplyTaply which works like the dearly departed SoundApp: Drag a file or files onto the desktop icon, and it plays them, then quits. You also get (limited) transport controls.

    For browsing oodles of files, it's hard to beat AudioFinder, though it's $60.

    Ahh neat – I keep hoping the Mac will catch up like this. I'm used to having what we called at eazel "audio thumbnailing" – hovering over audio files to hear them – in my file manager (Nautilus).

    The contextual menu plug-in nullQuickPlay will do the same thing. I'm not sure how good it is compared to nullInstant Player, but it does give the option of playing the file instantly or when you choose. And it plays MP3 files, too! 8)

    Well it is still a beta. I got it to crash while trying to play back a rather large AIFF file. I'll check out some of these other apps as well, though the more I read about it, the more I think AudioFinder is going to become a necessity very soon.
