Yes a vst editor for this would be extremly usefull maybe with some bpm sync lfo's, maybe a c64 synth with hardsid support like a virtual instrument version of goattracker would be popular

The SID is still alive and kicking - a whole lot of SIDStations have been sold (check out http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/ for a band using lots of SID-style sounds in their music), and there's a huge Commodore 64 remix scene making modern remixes of the old SID classics (downloads and links at http://remix.kwed.org/ plus http://www.remix64.com/ for the central community).

Good to see the HardSID getting better distribution in the US, though. It's mostly been an European thing these last few years since it came out.

I was involved with the making of the SID Symphony stereo cartridge (added a second SID) for the C-64/128. I saved a few SID chips. I guess I have a used for them now! One of the few times saving anything ended up paying off.

I spent many hundreds of hours playing with the C64 chip back in the day. Inspired by some great tunage and a wonderful editor program (Music Editor??). At the time a real synth was beyond reach
Great to see it being supported in this way. Almost makes me wish I'd made a deal on that stack of 20 or so C64s I saw in a pawn window a few years back.

God I hope these cards have a VSTi bridge for use in DAWs. As much as I love reFX's emulation, you just can't beat the original!

The SID is only in Commodore computers, though Yannes said it inspired the ESQ-1.

Bob Yannes designed the SID before co-founding Ensoniq. The heart of the ESQ-1 is the next generation of his designs, but it used digital wavetables. I think the filters were pure analog, tho.
