Well, the pattern gate and pitch automation are clearly awesome.

But I'll defend Logic here. There's reason to be upset with Apple's support, but on the feature front, I'd hardly describe Logic as standing still. Some effects and instruments haven't changed, but they're mostly aged well, and with lots of new stuff (Ultrabeat, Sculpture just for starters), I certainly don't have any complaints. Know of a freeware AU that can compete with Sculpture?

Given how fantastic Soundtrack Pro is, I'll also be really interested to see what happens in Logic 8.

Is DP worth considering? ABSOLUTELY. It's consistently underrated, and you could put together third-party synths that make you happier in DP than you would be in Logic. So I'd say there's a really close race between these two. The tough part is comparing apples to oranges, because the applications are very different in design and feature set, and a lot of the decision is highly personal.

Again, I just can't rank Cubase up there except for users who've already gotten adept with it. If I were starting new, I'd go DP or Logic on the Mac -- that's why we're so lucky to have this choice -- or on PC, I'd go SONAR.

As I get more and more into scoring-type situations I'm watching MOTU and Apple closely. I'm a Logic user right now, but Apple's support structure (or lack thereof) and MOTU's continue improvement of their app is giving Logic a serious run for the money.

Granted, Logic still leads in terms of effects and softsynths, but there are so many excellent freeware or low-cost AU's available these days, and the fact that many of the Logic synths and effects haven't been updated in at least a year or two weakens the Logic argument just a bit more...

When it comes time for my next major upgrade, you can bet that I'll be taking a much more serious look at moving (back) to DP.
