It is true that the MonoMe is going to be more expensive that the Forntier machine and others. But if you read the info on the MonoMe it shows that all the machines are made in house, and theyr are also trying to use materials that are good for the environment. That alone boosts the price. Gear like this usually costs more, compare Boss effects pedals to Zvex pedals. Or take for example Elektrons gear the Sidstation and Monomachine. All are very expensive for what they do, but they often have more character.

[...] The Monome is a new music interface with LED-backlit pads, a USB interface that transmits OSC and MIDI data to a computer, and here’s the unusual part open source, hackable firmware and software interface. Touch the pads, and you can use this as a step-sequencer and remix tool (as in the example), but the real philosophy here is being able to do whatever you want, so think of the example video as just a start.
Hi Paul,
Do you know if anyone has put together Tranzport "hacks" for manipulating that? I haven't tried playing with it in that way. Sounds like fun.

Unfortunately, it seems like all the initiatives to make communication bi-direction are (surprise, surprise) proprietary. Doesn't seem to have occurred to manufacturers that for the same reason we put masking tape with our own labels over their controls, we might want to control what appears on the interface. Even the Lemur I found to be pretty limited in what you could make appear on the screen -- i.e., you had to use their visual widgets, etc. (though that I think is also due to technical restrictions).

its not as cool, but i'd like to mention that the frontier design wifi "tranzport" controller is similarly "open". it uses an incredibly simple USB-based protocol to deliver button press/release and datawheel events, and to send light on/off and LCD display commands.

frontier are putting theirs out for $200 street. it seems a shame that this significantly simpler device (no labels, no datawheel, no LCD and no wifi) has to sell for more than twice that price. i say that because i wouldn't really want to try using the tranzport for the type of application shown in the demo video. lets hope they can find a way to make this thing for a more appropriate price.

[...] This thing looks incredible! What I really like about this controller is that it gives visual feedback, so that it allows the performer to be just that… more of a performer with an interactive instrument. Less of a button pusher. Kinda. Still pushing buttons. But pushing buttons w/ visual feedback allows the instrument to be more like a guitar w/ a fretboard, that visual metaphor… or like a sequencer screen… except that you can push the buttons! Buttons in a grid format seem like a much better solution than a screen and a mouse. Check out the video! [...]
