[...] As Melbourne descends towards it’s version of winter, have been clicking through more online videos than usual. This German hiphop live video impressed with it’s visual flair, emcees projected onto, and standing against a back-lit screen – quite gorgeous sound-responsive work, made using the processing software. Also using processing, is this quite satisfying visualisation of turntable scratching found at createdigitalmusic.com , who also feature an overview of Johnny DeKam’s live video rig for a Thomas Dolby tour.
When I say "I'm a VJ" people go "So you're on TV then?", which brings on the "Corporate Mouthwhores" rant and it all goes steadily downhill.
"Video Producer" seems to be most understandable as a short title.
Synaesthesiologist is cool but may scare people and/or require large amounts of explaining. Vidian sounds like it's got something to do with Scientology :)

I don't think it's just you. I like the term "live visuals" a lot, because it's fairly generic -- like music -- and covers the medium.

I still don't know what to call the person who does that, though. I've used VJ because it's the most popular term, even though I agree it's potentially VERY misleading. There are just as many people wearing it with pride and doing fine work that contradicts the stereotype.

Of course, we don't have a very good term for live electronic musician, either. But maybe we need a term for visuals as generic as "music"/"musician."

I definitely second the dislike of the term VJ. For instance, MTV has VJs but these are presenters. Outfits like Eclectic Method, who distance themselves from the term, actually seem most suited to it - when I saw them they cut and mixed music videos - exactly as I would expect a dj to do with music. I also dislike the term visuals precisely because of the trippy psychedelic dance music connotations. The sort of stuff I do for band Gojira, I feel is most closely aligned to painting or simply visual art. But maybe that's just me!
