[...] Toshio Iwai goes Nintendo. We’ve all gotten a chance to play with Iwai’s brilliant sound toys in the form of the Nintendo DS game ElectroPlankton. At the same time, musicians got the first indication that interactive art doesn’t always translate to musical instrument use. As CDM’s Nat noticed, just a few key missing features could have made ElectroPlankton truly rock (like multiplayer capabilities). Now, the Tenori-On looks terrific and I won’t judge it until it ships, but I notice some similar conservatism when it comes to next-gen functionality, like the lack of a protocol that would easily network multiple Tenori-Ons.
I love my little planktons, but your suggestions make my mouth water for more. It does seem, however, that Elektroplankton is rather a minority title (still not released in Europe) without much push on the part of Nintendo. I think you're right about this program and that there's a golden opportunity there for someone to make a watershed product. Perhaps Nintendo will release the source and the homebrew community will take it up? Well, I can dream can't I?
