Max/MSP/Jitter 4.6 Hits Beta, with Intel Native Support

Okay, Intel Mac owners: go get it. Max/MSP/Jitter 4.6 beta is here, with support for Intel Macs.

Okay, now everyone else: version 4.6 offers a lot of cool stuff even if you don’t have an Intel Mac. For Mac developers, there’s the ability to write externals in Xcode. And for 3D visual people, I’ve seen some amazing new features and new objects in this release. I haven’t yet installed the beta on my own machines, but what I’ve seen looks incredible: Quartz Composer effects in slab chains for high-performance processing right on the GPU (including video), jit.multiple for advanced processing of multiple geometry effects, and so on. Word on the street is that audio may make its way to the GPU soon, too. That could be reason to save your pennies for a machine with a real video card rather than integrated graphics. (Mac users, that means going to MacBook Pro instead of MacBook.) See comments for impressions from local Jitter ninja vade.

The only bad news here: Max isn’t in beta yet for Windows. But I expect that’ll happen soon.

Let us know how the beta works out for you, and watch for full coverage of what’s new and how to take advantage of it when it’s release officially.

[Update: After an outage Saturday (heavy demand for the Intel-native download, perhaps?), Cycling '74 is back online as of Saturday evening US time.]

You can speak about those features - its a *public* beta. jit.gl.multiple is in there and is super freaking badass, and so is jit.gl.imageunit (lets you use quartz composer effects within jitter with no binding glue - within a slab chain), and jit.vcr.

Best thing is spigot working. Woo!

Awesome update.

Live is one half my software equation, and it’s already Universal. Max/MSP/Jitter/Pluggo is the other half… soon I’ll be able to move completely to the MacBook Pro.

I had expected this to occur around the end of summer, not the beginning! Yet another reason Cycling ‘74 rocks my socks.

Create Digital Motion » What’s New and Cool in Jitter 1.6: OpenGL 3D and Video Goodies, More

[...] As reported on CDMusic, Max/MSP/Jitter is in beta on Mac for version 4.6 (Max) and 1.6 (Jitter). Intel Mac native support is just half the story; Mac and Windows users alike have a whole bunch of goodies to enjoy in Jitter: More shader support: Shaders are bits of code that allow you to perform various image, video, and 3D processing magic, all while taking advantage of the high-performance capabilities of your graphics card’s GPU. In short: shaders let you do amazing stuff, really fast. You could be forgiven for not knowing much about shaders, though, even as a fairly advanced Jitter user, because there are limited shaders included with Jitter 1.5.x, and documentation is limited. All that changes with Jitter 1.6: there’s improved support for shaders, more pre-built shaders to use, updated reference files, and lots of new help and examples to get you going. A VCR for QuickTime: The new jit.vcr object records real-time video and audio to a file. Powerful jit.gl.multiple object: jit.gl.multiple takes an incoming matrix and renders multiple instances of any 3D object, producing procedural as shown here from the example. (I was frustrated that Jitter 1.5 didn’t do this, since it’s a logical feature to have in an environment based on the matrix. It’s great to see it added now.) [...]
