Trying to decide between Novation's XioSynth 25 & the older X-station 25. Planning to use standalone and later w/ laptop (Live 5/6, Reactor, Various freebie magazine CD softsynths etc. Maybe Cubase or new Sonar??) I know X-station is 2x2 audio I/O and effects are routed to audio in. Xio has smaller footprint, onboard sounds seem fatter but all very techno/electro oriented (thats OK).

ANY SUGGESTIONS/ADVICE???
Thanks!

I think we should start a petition requiring midi and audio over USB on new gear. Even when the Micron came out a few years ago, the Keyboard reviewer noted its absence. Roland's handling of the SH-201 sounds excellent. Too bad they did not do the same thing with the new Handsonic HPD-10, which is still stuck in midi and audio cable land.

JBV: The Xiosynth, microX, Novation X-Station, and Roland SH-201 all let you route audio as well as MIDI over USB. The SH-201 even lets you route audio from your computer back to the keyboard for processing. (Not sure on the others regarding the opposite direction.) It's also possible to run analog audio simultaneously, so there are some interesting mixing and routing possibilities.

I think we'll soon see USB audio and MIDI as a standard on everything; it's already getting close.

So, can the Xiosynth and Korg MicroX record their output directly into a computer over USB or does the USB only provide controller support?

I'm enjoying the ability to program arpeggiator patterns for the SH-201 in the included software editor, so you get a basic piano roll viewer. But it doesn't have the ability to play multiple patterns at once, even when you're using onboard splits/layers. I think the Micron and Xiosynth may win out in terms of flexible routing of the arpeggiator/step sequencer.

Davidicus - the Micron not only arpeggiates, it allows you to record and save your own midi patterns (up to 16 bars). You can play multiple patterns at once (within 8 voice polyphony limit) with many different voices. It comes with a bunch of pattern and drum pattern presets.

i'd love to get one of these little guys, but the decider for me would probably be the arpeggiator.

does anybody have an opinion on which one has the greatest ability to inspire me with arpeggiator patterns? maybe the most pre-programmed patterns, or the greatest ability to create surprising patterns?
