It's not particularly difficult to add a midi port; at the moment, I'm trying to figure out how to do midi over USB with Arduino ... any ideas?!

Because the Arduino board has a USB port and not a MIDI port, which means you can't use it to directly control most music and VJ software and you can't use it to control hardware. You could hack the Arduino for MIDI I/O, but the MIDIsense is a ready-to-go solution. I love the Arduino; it's just a matter of the right tool for the job. (Especially once the MIDIsense gets upgraded with more I/O.)

if you're really going to get into the hardware hacking stuff, why not just buy a $30 arduino board and get both ins and outs?
