What I don't get is that, as soon as it plays on my earphones, music can be redirected to anything I want to record it. Why bother with DRM, if it is doesn't prevent anybody from recording anything?

Imaginary report from the near future:

Reporter:
"We might not feel seriously in danger, but according to studies the human race is slowly destroying the planet. You suggested the use the whole nuclear arsenal of the world to eradicate all human beings from the face of the Earth, bringing an end to the cumulative negative effect we have on it. Why did you make this suggestion?"

RIAA’s Senior Vice President of Government Relations Mitch Glazier:
“Why wait until it is a big problem to start addressing it? There are available technologies in the marketplace to address this issue.”
