Soundbooth CS3

Paint selections directly into audio frequencies using the Soundbooth CS3 lasso tool.

If you’ve been on the search for a simple, straightforward audio editor for Mac and Windows, Adobe has officially thrown its hat into the ring with Soundbooth CS3.

Of course, to the rest of the world, the big news is that Adobe’s full Production Premium and Master Collection suites are shipping. But Soundbooth is one program that could make sense to buy alone, as a basic audio editor. It sets itself apart both by being cross-platform and by being geared for beginners and people wanting a simple, streamlined tool. And the killer feature: there’s a lasso tool you can use directly on the audio spectrum. I’ve been using that to isolate sounds in field recordings that would otherwise be impossible to grab.

I hope to have an in-depth look at the finished tool soon, so no conclusions about the shipping software yet, but in the meantime, see our preview from the beta.

Hey Peter, you might want to check out Tapestrea over at Sound Lab @ Princeton University. Tapestrea is a tool that specializes in extracting "points of interest" from the "audio spectrum" of sound files. I've used it a little but the previous version 1.0.3 was a little buggy on my machine, screen redraws were finicky. Anyway, your article highlighting the lasso tool for Soundbooth CS3 reminded me to check for an update to Tapestrea and indeed there is a version 1.0.4 now available. You should definitely check out the "Sound Scene Modeling by Example" video available on the Tapestrea webpage. Tapestrea really is an ideal tool for use with field recordings, and it is excellent for sound design and sound experimentation as well. Check it out here: http://taps.cs.princeton.edu/ :)

I'm really excited to see how well this integrates with After Effects. If I can use Bridge in combination with Soundbooth to make quick edits to an audio track and have them update instantly in my AE project, I'll be a very happy man.

So I downloaded the demo of Soundbooth from Adobe. But one thing I don’t understand is why the Mac version download of Soundbooth is 780MB whereas the Windows download is 480MB.
