skkatter,

Actually, at this stage of his career, he is simply enjoying his work: not trying to compete with Korg/Roland/Yamaha. Every machine is kind of hand-made, he won't exactly make hundreds of millions at this. Believe it or not, I believe that he actually does this because he enjoys that work ;)

I find it hard to believe that somebody who sits at this table once a week (http://www.rogerlinndesign.com/dps/) is not very good at "keeping track of the other instruments on the market." If if I was in the synth selling business, I'd be paying even more attention to other synth sellers than I am now! :) I think the interviewer went a bit easy on him, it was an interesting read though!

As for "pressing him further" about software synths, he probably just plain isn't interested in them. Just like Bob Moog wasn't interested in sampling, or Delia Derbyshire wasn't interested in synthesizers. We can't all be interested in everything.

Speaking of the MIDI implementation, I remember when I first started hearing about MIDI a lot in Keyboard magazine in the 80s, and my thoughts at the time were, "okay, so you can play one synthesizer from another synthesizer's keyboard. So what??" I didn't quite get it right away. :)

That's right, it's the logo you see in the picture at the top of the story. This is the limited-edition model; I don't think the later models will have the same image.

And I'd absolutely agree with these points:
* Software is at its best when it's really innovating, not just emulating (though emulation is fine for those who can't afford/lift the real thing...)

* Hardware synths have unique capabilities ... and the Prophets are incomparable instruments that can't really be emulated.

it's hard to tell from just reading, but dave smith could have meant "real world" or "real space" or "physically realized" or "hardware" when he said "real". looking at his previous comment, i would guess that's what he means. and i think what he says about "serious" musicians is reasonable, too. obviously, your average beginner isn't going to spend a couple thousand dollars for a non-virtual (real) synth. those beginners that end up eventually buying a hardware synth will do so after becoming serious about synths.

i'm sure if he was pressed further, he would admit there are other benefits to VA-type software synths, like portability or whatever, but they're not worth mentioning. and he thinks there's more that software synthesis should be exploring, which is a valid opinion to have.

not related, but i just glanced at the zoomed out pic of the 08 and thought there was some sort of trackpad or screen on the right side. it's just a huge logo, though, right?
