NAMM: FL Studio 8 Slicing Beats, Bundling SynthMaker, in a Beta Near You
Fruity Loops, while a long-time underground favorite of PC music makers, seems to be on a roll at the moment. We were lucky enough to get an FL Studio 8 sneak peak with Didier Dambrin, Image-Line’s lead programmer — one of the great music software artists. Since our French was nonexistent and his English was limited, the scene was something like this: Didier silently tweaks his way around his software, we squint at the screen, and magical sound awesomeness happens.
FL Studio 8’s feature set will evidently be set free gradually, starting with a beta build called “7.4″ you’ll be able to download from the forums. The new features are FL’s combination of sublimely powerful tools and oddly superfluous toys. In the toys category: a live audio visualization you can float around your screen. (I’m guessing they’ll be fun to look at when you’re completely stuck creatively in the middle of a project.) In the sublime category: a new beat slicer that takes Edison several leaps further. Beat slices are MIDI assignable, filters and such are already available, and … well, it’s rather hard to describe, but it’s all put together in a Fruity way that makes it compelling.
The other revelation was that the cult-hit SynthMaker VST creation tool is now being licensed by Image-Line for inclusion with FL Studio. It’s not clear yet what if anything will be unique to this version, but the combination of FL’s tools with custom SynthMaker instruments you’ve built yourself sounds lovely. It should give you something to muse on while we wait on Ableton and Cycling ‘74, who are still mum on any product of the partnership they announced last year. No other details yet on FL 8 or FL SynthMaker, but this one’s dead center on our radar.

oh as soon as i remember, when i was tweaking FL some 6 years ago… it was load of fun ! and it allowed me to get some pretty nice beats !

Fruityloops only sounds like fruityloops because of the fact that it’s so easy to learn to use. This draws a lot of new users.
There are a ton of people who use it, and you don’t know.

FL is what most would classify as weak because its easy to learn such that most amateurs new to the production industry are recommended by others to use it before they move on to sophisticated software samplers such as propellerheads reason. This is a totally wrong conception about FLStudio. Every since the 3rd release of the program, it is amazing packed with a vast sound library of top notch quality sounds that can make a world hit or even a club banger. It lies among the best five audio production tools in the world and it is clear that its reputation is not yet about to die.

I learned with flstudio and used it for about 4 years. Its a great program thats has unlimited capabilties. I moved on to Ableton 6 last summer and i couldnt be happier but there is nothing wrong with fl its up to the artist to make it sound good

I promise you that fruity loops is 1000x’s better than reason!!!!!! matter of fact, you can pull up reason in FL studio and use both programs at the same time EASY!!!!!!!! I bet I could make a better track with FL studio than any reason user hands down

A few comments I noticed:
“FL Eats all your CPU”- What the fuck? If the effects eats all your CPU, upgrade. That goes for any DAW not just FL. You can use as many effects or as little as you’d like. IF your PC is poor, which it obviously is, don’t use so many effects. Again, same goes in any DAW, not a FL problem only.
“The real question is, does Fruity Loops still sound like Fruity Loops?”- Again, unless you want a program that has a magic button you push and it shits out a track with no effort required, then of course you’ll be happy. Does Pro Tools sound like shit in the hands of an amateur? Of course, same with Fl Studio. I have been using this program for years and I know it inside and out. Any sound can be made, and my tracks are coming out incredibly good.
-Check out new effects and plug-ins by Image-Line like Morphine, Sytrus, and Maximus. Or how about Sliex, and incredible slicing tool, or Love Philter, EQ2, etc. The list goes on but the simple fact is…
NO COMPANY ON EARTH PROVIDES AS MANY INCREDIBLY SOPHISTICATED EFFECTS AND INSTRUMENTS PACKAGED WITH THEIR SOFTWARE AS IMAGE-LINE’S FL STUDIO.
FL blows reason out of the watter. Show me a sound in reason, and I’ll recreate it in FL Studio in half the time with less effort.
Come on people, give it a try and learn it before you know it.

Ok how about the BEST answer to one of the dumbest questions (does fruity loops sound like fruity loops):
It’s a MIDI program!!! Yeah you can generate sound and all but REAL producers would use it like an MPC which generates NO sound. The sound that comes out is the sound that YOU put in it. What you use these days has NOTHING to do with how hot ur tracks are. If it did, then EVERYONE would buy that and EVERYONE would be hot, lol. At the end of the day, it’s about YOUR talents.

I’m using FL since 2005 and always been 100% satisfied. I really don’t want to change, and I’m ready to follow them with the years.
For my new machine, i switched my OS to linux (ubuntu first, maybe gentoo later) … and i have a M-Audio 1010lt. my question is:
will FL sell a linux compatible version soon? Is it in development? Can we help?
I’m supporting the linux freedom, and the opensource spirit… but i’m not radical! I’m ok to pay for what worths it. My goal never was to drop FL, or the non-krosoft softwares as long as they DO the job.
So… is there (or will there be) a linux version of FL, or a good way to run it on a GNU/linux, a Gentoo, or an Ubuntu?
I just hope so … because to me win sounds like the past. Definitely.
So, in the meantime i’ll setup a little win98 on a liveCD just to handle my old FL. heh.

forget fruity for linux. they won’t do it because they only care about the business.
so, use the FL kraked version available almost anywhere, it’s very easy to install on a virtual xp.
or switch to LMMS, the free linux copy of fruity.
anyhow, if they don’t launch a fruity for linux very soon they’ll be dead within 2 to 4 years.
win&mac already are the past.
i’d pay for a linux FL of course. but as long as they don’t make one, i won’t pay.
