Nice!!! I've been working on a smaller sound square version, too, but with LED indicators around the edges to help orient yourself in the x/y space without looking at the computer. It's really cool to see someone else doing this! And the visual feedback is really nice. That it was created w/in the same time period (early 90's) is interesting too. To me it seemed sort of like a no-brainer to make a sensor grid, and I always wondered why this idea never took off commercially (except in manufacturing product control and security systems, I think). I just assumed someone would commercialize it and it'd be a Sharper Image desk toy w/in a couple years. 15 years later... maybe the world is ready? ;)

I did a Sound Square in the early 90's but it was a bit smaller than that. Recently dusted it off and re wrote the software for the Mac. See it on You tube:-
