Oh, I'll add -- Cakewalk's CEO mentioned specifically looking at how to make their business work in China, and thought a lot about things like hardware bundles as a way to improve perceived value versus software alone. But I think the other likelihood is -- as Greg mentioned -- that a lot of the successful software efforts in China and a lot of Asia will come from local makers. And that's probably a good thing.
That interview is here:

I don't think it's racist to say you're not entering a specific market for business reasons. Now, whether that's a smart business move -- that's a different question. Microsoft had failed in the Chinese market and blamed piracy, and later made it work by hiring more local employees and pricing more appropriately for the market. So, by the same argument, if Stardock wants to extend the argument they're making, they shouldn't blame rampant piracy first.

But I don't think it's a leap to say, statistically, piracy is common in China, for a number of reasons historical and economical. Now if you say you then don't like Chinese people or something, that would definitely be racist. But even better would be to actually look at how to make your products work in that market.

"We also don't make games targeting the Chinese market

....And what good is a market where the minimal commitment to make a game for it is $10 million if the target audience isn't likely to pay for the game?

If the target demographic for your game is full of pirates who won't buy your game, then why support them?"

blatant racism, linked by cdm. a shame, really.

It's completely insane if people who are infringing on copyright law have a better experience than the paying users.

@lematt: Well, hopefully, if you see something having to do with games here, it will have a direct musical connection -- ie, music *for* games (just like music/sound for film and TV), or as an interaction design problem. Games aren't the same as music software, and for a lot of us any gaming time has to compete with music software time. But there are parallels. As opposed to office software from Microsoft or graphics software from Adobe, games also have to perform in real-time, and they often have to justify their value without your employer buying them for you. So there are technological and business connections.

That said, I do figure any of the stuff that's here on CDM will bore *someone* -- so I do try to keep the mix diverse!

I found the original article rambling and obtuse and I'm thankful for your rundown, Peter. I think you extracted the best points.
