This has all the earmarks of an artificial attempt to increase the device's cachet by keeping it unavailable and/or expensive.

Hmm. It is a bit of an enigma. Yamaha says the device's target market is hardcore serious music enthusiasts not necessarily musicians. But it seems the device ended up costing much more than that target market will tolerate.

Typically a product like this will cost a lot to build initially: tooling, molds, factory setup, etc. With production ramp up for a large global distribution those costs are spread out and the average cost comes down. But if higher-ups only approved manufacture of a few hundred devices those costs will all have to be passed on to the consumer unless the company wants to subsidize early production. A company might want to subsidize early production costs if they want to develop a new market.

Of course the low dollar makes the situation even worse.

Unfortunately (or possibly fortunately) the tenori-on site is not YouTube. While you can freely upload audio we neither have the capacity for unlimited video nor feel it's appropriate to let anyone upload anything on a site like this.

We feel we have a reasonable handle on websites (!) but this site is both an official destination for North American sales and also a community site for users and potential users of Tenori-on.

It is also only a few weeks old!

While we always try to listen to requests we also hope people will give us chance (Tenori-on is not even launched yet in North America!) to find best balance of content and services for this instrument and its community.
