I can't believe its been 10 years already... I remember the exact moment I was introduced to digital vinyl, what always amazes me and still does is how accurate some of these set ups can get.. there is almost no lag factor.. and that was my first initial thought..."he's cutting mp3's... holy crap!"

i like cats.. I like vinyl.. I like turntables.. I like that picture..

@peter: damn, i misremembered what TerminatorX was/is. My recollection was that it used vinyl timecode from the beginning, when in fact, it never really has used it at all. My apologies for the misdirect. Feel free to delete my useless post.

@Paul: Sure, but the point here is the vinyl timecode. TerminatorX is interesting, I agree, but the enabling technologies of the computer side of this equation generally go much earlier than 1997. Writing that history would take more than a blog post. And realize I'm not covering any of the other digital DJ things ... timecode included ... just tracing the Final Scratch thing is complicated enough. :)

an extra wrinkle in the history:

 http://terminatorx.org/

it doesn't predate the claims to have done timecode work from 1997-1999, but it certainly predates or parallels any commercial product using the technology.

Robert, I'm not sure. Initially I thought it was an area of concern, but as you look closer at this case -- given NI's *direct* involvement with the underlying technology that was in Final Scratch -- I think this is really largely limited to NI. It gives N2IT some additional leverage if they decide to pursue further patent claims. But they'd now have to go after a lot of targets, and there seems to be no indication they're bringing anything else to court. Open source projects would likely be down the list.

Someone with patent law background might be able to say more, but based on my *own* knowledge, I can at least say that NI had an unparalleled amount of access to the technology. Open source projects are just doing the basics -- timecode on vinyl -- and are even focused more on the easy parts of the implementation of that.
