[...] Interview: Rechenzentrum, A/V Duo at Mutek Rechenzentrum, which means “data processing center” in German, is a Berlin-based duo who create live audio-visual performances by combining austere film visuals with their own brand of minimal techno, fusing elements of jazz, dub, and early industrial. Marc Wieser handles the music half while Lillevan navigates the visual landscape. Their 2003 DVD release Director’s Cut, originally out on Mille Plateaux, went on to win the Ars Electronica prize. Marc and Lillevan sat down with us after their sound check for A/Visions 2 at Mutek 2008. [...]

Wow, schock... I programmed them a couple of months ago, after having them over several times before, I'd had some kind of feeling then there was something on the horizon, but I had other matters to attent to that night, to go into depth about what the future would hold for Rechenzentrum.
By the way, Mark doesn't just use a laptop, he has a sampler as well and a mixer with chaospads etc connected.
I'll miss 'm but am interested what's next!

I liked this: "Why do you think this relationship of music to to video has become so important of late?"....Well, could it have anything to do with the fact that watching someone check their emails onstage is pretty boring? Never mind the fact that the music is probably minimal-Y interesting.
;-P
That's the problem, IMO of course, with laptop based performing....you can't watch the performer's brain impulses in action - seeing as they are physically doing very little else to keep your interest.

interviews are scheduled for us media peeps by the mutek press relations crew, we don't usually have a choice about when and where. :-)

again, living in a visual culture already underrates sound considerably. that's why i think musicians should be more than careful in determining their intentions when mixing audio and video. IMHO almost 95% of electronic music+video output is just concept-less baggage, purely formal. still an issue in the post-digital era we're living in..

ps: stop the musician-meets-vj-at-soundcheck-for-the first-time madness!!

I was interested to here about the art connection to mixed media... I had no Idea that Leorardo Da Vinchi tried to accomplish anything like that!
It makes sense though because if you listen to music with your eyes closed - one (at least I) experience a very similar thing to the music video combo.

Look and Listen...

Electronic music in different variations has been with us for a while now, and some musicians click with it and some don’t.

Nice to hear whats going on in these guys heads. Ashame to hear they're splitting up.
Big ups Andrew Lochhead for the photos.

Why more electronic musicians are integrating sound and visuals now, even though it is an ancient desire...? Its been technology thats opening up the possibilities so much. It enables information mapping - the digital medium allows for a translation between the two domains.

If not this then its software allowing us to take almost any image or idea out of our heads and make it as dynamic as music has always been in our minds.
