let me get this straight. a new idrum desktop version will be released allowing the iphone to sync with it? or will there be a stand alone app to accomplish this or will a new idrum for the iphone be released that allows this? or all three or a combination of the three?

"Listen, I’m not a big fan of chiptune music nor of far-out alternative controllers, and I’ve stuck through this site’s various bouts of news on making music with Nintendo cartriges, Gameboys, refrigerator CPUs, and wacked-out Wii controllers ... Anyway, I hope that people who aren’t as excited about this platform can appreciate what it’s doing for our niche"

Indeed. iPhone stories should not be marginalized just because a few vocal individuals have an attitude about the platform. The pace will die down in any case, as developers settle in to the iPhone SDK.

Let the uninterested utilize their scroll bars, and let the rest of us read iPhone news without artificial impediments....

Listen, I'm not a big fan of chiptune music nor of far-out alternative controllers, and I've stuck through this site's various bouts of news on making music with Nintendo cartriges, Gameboys, refrigerator CPUs, and wacked-out Wii controllers. I agree with KimH-- if you don't like it, scroll over it! Maybe drop a useful comment about why you don't like it and engage in a healthy discussion. In the meantime, I think we can all rest assured that we're not in a zero-sum game here. Peter posts what he sees fit; he's not eschewing your news on the latest 8-bit hawtness for iPhone stories. Everyone's a bit excited now-- shoot, when was the last time a company like iZotope made an app for mobile music making??

Anyway, I hope that people who aren't as excited about this platform can appreciate what it's doing for our niche, just as I get a kick out of the waves of sonic doom people wield with their Wii nunchucks wired into LSDJ while Bjork maniacally smiles on her reacTable.

P.S. I made that part up about refrigerator CPUs ...

Or you could just satisfy both parties by listing all the information as it always has been but put two links at the top of the page to view "music only" or "mobile only". Seems like the most logical step to me. Both sides can choose to go straight to their content or see everything like before. Just a thought.....

Well, I'm always of the "choose later if it means better" school. But, of course, I'll continue to share breaking news where appropriate. No one's becoming a second-class citizen here. Mobile and gaming are two spaces that have been part of CDM since the beginning.

Another couple of points on mobile music/iPhone coverage coverage...

"Readers have complained that we’re doing so much mobile music coverage that it’s hard to wade through it, specifically in regards to the iPhone."

There is a powerful technology for dealing with less interesting content, called the "scroll bar." In my experience, when posters complain that there's so much "xxxxx" that it’s hard to wade through it," it usually means something simpler -- they just don't like "xxxxx" at all.

"I’ll be consolidating [mobile music/iPhone] news into a more manageable weekly post."

You say, "the goal is to make this information more manageable both to those who love mobile music making, and those who don’t." But for me, as someone interested in mobile music, that's not "more manageable," it's "less available."

IMHO, news that's (in effect) embargoed and then shoehorned into a weekly post shouldn't be called "more manageable." It should be called "late." Please don't make mobile news a second class citizen.

I'd like to add my support for mobile music coverage in general, and iPhone coverage in particular. Don't forget that iPhone 3rd party apps are in their start-up phase, so it's completely natural that there's a lot of activity.

Also, remember that there are lots of people who for whatever reason just don't like Apple and/or the iPhone. They will tend to be more vocal about this than people who are ok with the coverage -- but that doesn't mean they're more numerous.

The iPhone is an important and interesting new platform for musicians. It deserves full coverage.

Don't cave to the haters.
