i need the Music Shaper-balls for my dogs. that way i can stop making music altogether and leave it to the dogs. always enjoyed improv and randomness over composition anyhow.

regarding suggestions for gestural music research: Eboman. there has been a piece about him earlier but i think he has done a lot of work in this area with the Sensor-suit he built, and he used it in live performance as well, both solo and together with theatre and other stuff. and its combined with video as well! and he's Dutch! :)

It sounds like there are going to be three flavors of Zoozbeats a free app up to a more "Pro" app.

I think this is a good approch because people who are not electronic musicians want to have fun too. A lot of the more complex apps like Noise.io and Beatmaker might be too intimidating to someone who is starting from zero knowledge.

Looks like fun though.

Like the Korg DS-10 linking up with others is fun.

@Kyle: Yeah, absolutely. And I think that's equally interesting stuff. I will say, even for an advanced instrument, there's something to be learned in testing and feedback from musicians. And just designing something to be sophisticated doesn't necessarily make it so -- sometimes a simple instrument can become sophisticated in the hands of a master player, which I think is what Gil means by that "high ceiling" concept. But what I do like about this is that people are asking questions about all ends of this spectrum.

one might wonder if it causes people to neglect the potential of design with instruments intended for more depth

As counter-examples, I would cite Curtis Bahn, one of my teachers who has developed very nuanced extensions of his bass and sitar, Dan Trueman's extended violin, and Tod Machover's Hyperbow, aimed specifically at "accomplished players."

Though the fact that a few very specific people come to mind may actually be a counter-argument...

@agargara:
Two possible answers to that question:

1. Doomed, as we were by the invention of the kazoo. (Damn you, kazoo!)

2. Teaching Day Care.

Wouldn't worry about it. ;)
