I downloaded both and the sound is excellent. It truly adds a notable fresh texture to my rig. I loosely "hate" NI's blocky-print GUIs, but this was a great idea on their part. I'll buy a couple of their packs, make them a little money and dodge the hassle of the larger items like Reaktor that don't really fit my goals. I recommend this setup; the sounds are clear without being too pristine or shrill. There is both delicacy and beef to be had here. Heck, that woodwind sound feels and sounds as sensitive as can be. Verdict: 5-star cool.

Peter, please add this to the post: there's an annoying issue with Kore Player after installing the Compilation Pack on OSX. For some reason, Kore Player can't find the sounds from the original soundpacks, but the files are there.

Fortunately, there's a clunky but easy solution. Open the terminal and type the two following command lines exactly as they appear below:

<code>cd "~/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Kore Player"</code>

<code>rm Soundpacks.cache koredb</code>

Close the terminal and open Kore Player. This removes Kore Player's cache and forces it to reload the sound database. Unfortunately you'll lose your ratings, but there's no way around it.

It's incredible that NI could let a bug so easy to detect and yet so annoying, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Hehe. I'll be sure to pass along the Conch of Cynicism as soon as I'm finished sampling it.

As for my real view of this story, I think it's great that tools like this are available to people who can't afford the full set. There's no time like now to make music with no money, really. Will it create a lot of derivative knock-offs? Sure, but that's not to say there isn't some destitute but creative soul out there that can make something amazing.

Oh, and it's your turn to say something cynical, because you're holding the Conch of Cynicism. Once that gets passed to someone else, of course, it's their turn. Happily, we also have a Fig Leaf of Blind Optimism to pass around...

@Puffer: hmmm, that's pretty unfortunate. Define "not working" -- what does it do? Which OS?

Maybe the forums will be some help.

@Darren: well, the good news anyone who uses the presets exactly as-is probably won't have the sense to try out the variations or twist any of the knobs -- those two things being the whole point of the koresound thing!

For the life of me, I cannot get the Kore Player to work on my system. I've got several other NI instruments, but for some reason this will not cooperate. I guess I should go back to the NI forums and try again, though they weren't able to get me beyond the infinite loop of the install I seem to be in.

This actually looks much more interesting than the Korg M1 LE that comes with the Nano series controllers. I lost about 20 minutes of my life installing and registering that hopeless mess... great, a collection of FM-pianos-with-strings and log-drums-with-narbly-vocal-pads. I don't remember the 80's actually being like that.

Ooh, is it my turn to say something horribly cynical now?

Ahem...

"Great! Now we'll get a new flood of so-called 'producers' in their bedrooms all remaking the same old song with identical sounds thanks to NI."

Thank you! I'll be here all week.
