@bennett: Well, absolutely. And the list goes on, TuneCore, drop.io, online stores dancetracks and othermusic, bunch of Web music companies, the NY Times R&D Lab. We've done of course a music hackday with New Work City and CDM in June, and around a narrower topic (tangible interfaces). We have the monthly CDM Handmade Music. We have regular "patching circles" around Pd/OpenFrameworks. We have NYC Resistor. And in addition to Columbia / NYU, don't forget significant programs at SUNY, CUNY, Parsons, and NJ area schools.

In fact, I think it's the fact that NYC's tech scene is often more diffuse and varied is a reason it's needed more badly here.

But I also think there was a missed opportunity with the London hackday to get efforts online. We learned a lot from that first experiment to make that happen in June, and definitely will be doing this on a regular basis with the CDM community.

there is talk of setting up an nyc (er, well, east coast, but the two votes i've seen so far were for NYC over Boston) hackday on twitter- @echonest (near boston) and others (myself included) were coming up with a list of organizations / companies that may be interested, like amie street, indaba, hype machine, limewire... plus we've got NYU's and Columbia's music tech programs. bring it!
