UltrachannelScreenshot3

You know those infomercials that tell you to call now – though it makes absolutely no difference when you call? This is the opposite of that.

Basically, you can buy a new 64-bit channel strip plug-in from Eventide for US$249. Or, act now, and it will cost … nothing. It’s free, through the 8th of July. I had to read this twice; I thought maybe it was an older version or an existing plug-in. It’s not. Their intro price is zero, and then it goes up to two hundred fifty bucks.

And coming from Eventide, this is especially big news, as the company has a long tradition of making some of music makers’ favorite processing algorithms.

So, if you think you might fancy a channel strip, you can skip this article and head straight to it. UltraChannel is almost an entirely plug-in suite in a single plug-in. There’s EQ and compression, of course, but also gate, delays, micro pitch control, and saturation (including some subtle saturation capabilities) – something you might use creatively as well as for mix/master workflows. You get:

  • Micro pitch functionality (from the H8000)
  • Stereo delays with variable feedback paths
  • Compressor #1: de-essing, side-chain capable
  • Compressor #2: O-Pressor “extreme” compression (compression from the Omnipressor)
  • Saturation: both what they call “Soft-Saturation” and an emulation of transformer core saturation
  • Drag-and-drop signal routing
  • EQ
  • Gate
  • Lots of presets

It’s compatible with AU, VST, and AAX64, on OS X and Windows, and it’s 64-bit.

So, what’s the catch?

You have to provide your email, and you sign up for their mailing list. (You can opt out of that once you grab the plug-in.) And you do have to use an account via iLok.com, though that’s just for authorization – you don’t need a physical iLok dongle. (You do need to install license management software, but testing it here as are various readers and no one is having any issues at the moment.)

Clarification: Let’s be clear about this. It’s a permanent license (that’s what we’re seeing in the account). It doesn’t expire when the full version goes on sale. They use iLok’s website to authorize the account, but you don’t need a dongle. (So, essentially, some people are complaining about things in comments that simply aren’t true.)

If you don’t have an iLok account, you can sign up for one; it doesn’t cost anything. The “access code” they’re asking for is the offer code, essentially, a coupon; it’s 0F736710.

Details and registration for the offer:

pretty sure after the deadline it will no longer function for free

    • http://rekkerd.org Ronnie

What makes you say that? The license expiration in my iLok account says “Never”…

    • dzacc

They also address this pretty clearly in the article.

    • Alex T

Nope. Just got my copy, and the expiration = “Never”

    • nicolas

right on guys maybe i’ll check it out then. I said this because on their youtube video it says it’s “free THROUGH july 8″ just some obscure phrasing.

  • Pete K

what do they mean by access code ?

    • griotspeak

Watch the first Youtube video. It is at the end.

  • AGM

just search google for Eventide Access Code and you’ll find one. i found this one that worked: 06EF9112

    • http://www.sylvainpoitras.com/ Sylvain Poitras

Thanks, that worked for me as well.

    • charnk

Thanks for the code. Worked for me as well.

  • Carlos Ruano

The access code is in the video, at the end. 07D96411

  • shim

    fucking ilok. FAIL.

    • http://pkirn.com/ Peter Kirn

      Why?

All you need is the login account. You don’t have to use the dongle. You type in a code and you’re done.

    • Harry

I submitted the access code, iLOK account and my email address. The next page said that I will be receiving an email with the download link or sth like that. I haven’t received that email since yesterday. I have done the whole process twice, yet no email. In my iLOK Licence Manager I have the UltraChannel Native and I can activate the licence. The problem is I still don’t have the plugin itself! I appreciate any help regarding this! x

    • Greg K

The promotion is running on Amazon’s cloud, and Amazon turned off emails for the promotion for a while, b/c it hit their mail caps. That problem should be cleared up now; if you fill out the form again, it should work fine.

  • nayseven

Thanks Peter, this plug in seems really powerful !

Yes, it seems the popularity of this story has slowed down delivery of the installers. ;) Some folks are having to wait.

    • Harry

Aw so you believe it is just a delay in delivery! Well that’s relieving! hehe.. Thanks for your reply Peter : )

    • Rob

Thanks Peter, I just signed up (for both the ilok.com account and this plugin) and the process took less than two minutes. The license was applied to my ilok.com account immediately and I got an email from Eventide almost immediately. Seems the logjam might be cleared for now.

  • DPrty

I have it up and working ….. thanks Peter!

For those still waiting for emails with the installers check out this forum thread. It has direct links.

  • xaccrocheur

Any platform? Does it run on mine (GNU/Linux)?

    • http://pkirn.com/ Peter Kirn

Yes, actually, as you have support for Windows VSTs. ;) I don’t know what happens with the iLok authorization software running in WINE; I’ve run Windows VSTs but haven’t tried that.

    • rando

Wouldn’t you have to be running your host in WINE? This isn’t “any platform” if it was available as a native Linux VST, that’d be one thing.

    Thanks a lot Peter!!!
I’m trying it now and it’s really cool, seriously I will use it a lot

  • fauves

Can we get confirmation that it’s free FOREVER…I don’t want to be doing a live gig and have it all of a sudden go dead on me…=)

    • http://www.sourcedistribution.co.uk Alex

      See above :)

      Thanks!

I’m assuming the iLok install is to prevent people from passing around free copies of this after they start charging money for it. It isn’t just to authorize via their website though, as it requires an install. I still wouldn’t want iLok anywhere near my computer, even in software form.

    • shim

      what Charles said

    • dzacc

Why wouldn’t you want iLok near your computer??? Seems to work fine for everyone using ProTools (=a huge portion of serious music producers)…And an alliance with iLok could be for any number of reasons. It’s not always straightforward, but it seems like it’s a pretty reasonable solution at the moment.

    • DevilSucker

Agreed, this is one gift horse I have to look in the mouth.

I was excited a few months ago when Eventide bragged about “no more dongle”, only to be disappointed by a bait-and-switch. The hardware dongle had been replaced by a still third-party software one. Anyone who has had to deal with the ninth circle of hell that is iLok knows all too well.

I only wish Eventide and the other vendors could comprehend how many sales they are losing as a result of this poor decision. Punishing tormenting your paying customers in a futile attempt to thwart thieves — at best temporarily, if at all — truly demonstrates where their priorities lie.

In the meantime my hard-earned money will lie elsewhere.

    • http://pkirn.com/ Peter Kirn

That may be, but two observations:

One, I haven’t heard any complaint from people using the iLok license software. Now, maybe there are problems, but let’s hear about them.

Two – your hard-earned money wouldn’t be lying with them anyway. The thing is free.

That trombone preset is sounding pretty good to my ears… that will get some use for sure.

  • Dartanyan Brown

I’m running UltraChannel in DP8.x and just finished a mini mix in Ableton 9. Sweet! Thanks (again) Peter. Seems like a cool little plug.

  • Will Copps

Thank you Peter! This is fantastic

  • EL

So I downloaded everything.. after getting the installer for the channel strip, its going to a root folder on my mac. I cant figure out how to open the program itself? Any help would be appreciated..
