<p>2010 is looking to be a terrific year for handmade computer music from Los Angeles. For one example of why, look to Deru, the composer and live electronic musician. His work continually grows more lush and more organic, drawing from musical strains as diverse as hip-hop and classical. And his upcoming album, &#8220;Say Goodbye to Useless,&#8221; takes all of that in. (Previously on Ghostly, Deru will release this disc on <a href="http://www.mushrecords.com/">Mush</a>.) I think it&#8217;s going to be a big year for warm, rich-sounding music. </p>
<p>Deru also has what looks like the CDM dream studio, neat, comfy, elegant, and packed with the best, most compact musical toys. If he doesn&#8217;t inspire me to work on my music, he may at least inspire me to clean my apartment.</p>

<p><a href="http://dubspot.com">DubSpot&#8217;s</a> Live 8 Sessions Tour heads to Los Angeles this weekend, for a set of workshops, performances, and demos on Hollywood Boulevard. I&#8217;ll be out with the crew, and hosting with DubSpot a special interactive performance lounge Sunday night.</p>
<p><strong>Sunday night</strong> will feature generative audiovisual art made on iPhones, and laser-powered, open-source gestural controllers and a laser installation that responds to motion and sound, plus Christopher Willits, Kid Beyond, Irwin, myself, and a lot more.</p>
<p><strong>The weekend workshops:</strong> The artist lineup includes legends from a number of genres, including Scientist, Kid Beyond, Daedelus, Justin Boreta (Glitch Mob), Thavius Beck, and Christopher Willits. Other names you may not know have their own resume in sound design and performance (Irwin), producing and education (Steve Nalepa), mastering technique (Daniel Wyatt), and business (Barry Cole). Sunday, monome virtuoso Daedelus and I will talk about controllers, performance, and sampling technique, I hope going well beyond Live to design and playing technique in general. Passes are $110 for one day, or $195 for the weekend. <p>Ableton is a co-presenter, and Live a jumping-off point, but the topics really wind up being about more than any one tool. You&#8217;ll find deeper questions about composing, sound design, mastering, business, performance, controllers, and design in these discussions. I hope to work with some of my artist friends and DubSpot to bring more of those conversations to the CDM readers worldwide.</p>

<p>Digital technology has transformed the listening experience. But there&#8217;s little in the way of physical artifacts of that act, and a diminished sense of humanized relationships to an individual being at the other end. From modern radio to Internet-streamed playlists, our listening world is DJed by automated robots in streams that flow through generic, mass-market speakers. The object and the content lack the design intention that imbued, for instance, the gorgeous radio sets of the early 20th Century and the personalities that narrated the programming.<br />

<p>Armed with a lasercutter, designer Matt Brown has a novel concept for how to redesign the act of listening. From the creator&#8217;s blog Real Tomato:<span id="more-8047"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>For this system, you would have a speaker with an rfid reader, and laser-cut paper radios with rfid chips inside. The radios themselves are designed by musicians, charities, brands, and designers. When the paper radio is placed over the speaker it changes the radio station to what the artist has chosen. Other noises and interactions can be programmed in too. Alec Baldwin&#8217;s radio for example could politely ask everyone to turn their lights off from time to time. People could have the paper radios around their house in different rooms. The supremes radio might be a better living room station. This system tries to add a little bit of fun to internet radio, and give people a connection with the artists they choose. The radios themselves would hopefully be cheap and collectible little sculptures, each one accessing unique stations.</p></blockquote>
<p>The artist, D.A.R.Y.L., is a recent alumnus of Sweden&#8217;s <a href="http://www.dh.umu.se/">Umea institute of Design</a>.</p>
<p>I think we need a new, specialized Creative Commons license that describes &#8220;Great Concepts I Probably Won&#8217;t Get to Developer Further so Please Go Run with It With Some Credit to Me.&#8221; (Okay, maybe with a shorter name.) I love the possibilities this project suggests, if for no other reason than the beautiful sculptures created with the lasercutter.</p>

<p>The works themselves are printed out a single sheet and assembled. THat demonstrates some of the power lasercutters can provide, and the promise they hold for localized production of objects. (Use eco-friendly recycled paper and inks, and this is a consumer product that doesn&#8217;t deliver a dropkick to the planet.) </p>
<p>I just interviewed Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy, and he told me saw a survey that showed some 80% of music journalists listen through music via the built-in speakers in their laptops. That would be terrifying if true &#8211; I&#8217;m not certain that it is &#8211; but regardless, I think there is a clear need to rethink listening processes and objects.</p>

<p><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/09/07/imaginary-instruments-marker-and-paper-as-controller/">Imagine drawing an interface on paper</a>, then being able to use it as a musical interface. Or, heck, don&#8217;t <em>imagine</em> it &#8211; do it. Unfortunately, the kinds of intelligence necessary to make the music video in yesterday&#8217;s post just aren&#8217;t practical yet. (That is, you could draw a picture of a keyboard, and even use the picture as a music controller, but while you or I could recognize a keyboard from a drum pad and know that line is a fader, a computer would need some sort of advance structure for any recognition to work.) But you can do some really clever things, as folks have shared in comments.</p>
<p>And using some basic paper interfaces, you can make entire instruments for just a few dollars.</p>
<p>Of course, the awesomest way to do anything is with LAZORS. Greg Kellum and Alain Crevoisier presented a paper at last year&#8217;s NIME (a conference for new interface designs for music) proposing a system for making any surface a control surface. Like the music video yesterday, you can configure your surface to function however you like &#8211; even dividing it up into pads and faders. </p>
<p>By now, you&#8217;e likely seen plenty of multi-touch interfaces or means of tracking hands. But, to paraphrase the NIME paper, these either require a special surface (or transparent surface), or they can&#8217;t actually detect when you&#8217;re touching. You can even use multiple cameras or an IR beam, but there are limitations to accuracy and the size of the usable surface that would result. Kellum and Crevoisier use an infrared camera and two illuminators, each built by pointing a laser at a mirrors. </p>
<p>Yawn, you say, been there, done that, seen Jeff Han&#8217;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zGDNFpOMcA">video</a>&#8230; The advantage of this system is that you can use any surface, like your dining room table. And you can configure that surface however you like. There&#8217;s even a freely-downloadable Surface Editor you can extend in Java and Processing. The creators claim they can even get input latency down to a reasonable 10 ms using high-speed cameras.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/db3ll">db3ll</a> has created a keyboard out of paper, and of course it works better than those flimsy rubber &#8220;roll-up&#8221; pianos you see for sale. &#8220;Conductive ink is what I used,&#8221; he says, &#8220;painted on as traces on the non-printed side of the paper.&#8221; That&#8217;s the twist &#8211; I had assumed you&#8217;d use the top of the paper, but the trick is to use the <em>reverse</em> side to provide the &#8220;wiring.&#8221; He also offers advice for making a fader:<span id="more-7336"></span></p>
<blockquote><p> You can make a paper thin fader in much the same way, but it requires a magnet. Cut a slot in a piece of paper, color around the slot with conductive ink (I use the “trace repair” pens sold at electronics supply places… it has a very fine tip), and glue some SVHS tape (resistive side up) under it. Put a thin piece of metal beneath the SHVS tape &#038; use a magnet to conduct between the SVHS tape &#038; the conductive ink. The magnet will stay in position due to the metal (I use package banding) under it, and aside from the magnet, it is roughly the thickness of a couple sheets of paper.</p></blockquote>
<p>Simon Lacelle is also working on a project I&#8217;m eager to see:</p>
<blockquote><p>In a pad controller I’m making using a HUGE Staples calculator, I’m using strips of aluminium foil separated by a sheet of paper with holes at each button as switches merely a milimeter thick, and these are quite responsive.</p></blockquote>
<p>A YouTube uploader by the name of DJ Mocap appeared briefly online with a project that seems to show him controlling Traktor with a drawing. There&#8217;s a camera and some sort of analog input being fed into a circuit board, but I&#8217;m not entirely sure what&#8217;s going on &#8211; though I can think of a couple of ways to make this work. It stumped <a href="http://www.djtechtools.com/2008/08/01/the-5-cent-midi-controller/">DJ Tech Tools&#8217; readers</a>, but I have a feeling it can&#8217;t stump CDM readers, so have at it.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATED &#8211; FAKE (but possible)</strong> Okay, so this turns out to be a Stanton touch controller hiding underneath a piece of paper. Of course, that&#8217;s itself not such a terrible idea &#8211; by having a drawn overlay, you have visual feedback for specific positions on the controller. But furthermore, while this is fake, the idea remains possible &#8211; and more cheaply than buying a piece of Stanton gear to toss under your piece of paper. So I call this &#8220;fake but potentially inspiring.&#8221;</p>

<p>Just to consider moving in the opposite direction, I have to point to Amit Pitaru&#8217;s Sonic Wire Sculptor, an interface for drawing virtually and digitally. Because it&#8217;s digital, you can draw in 3D, do something you can&#8217;t with real-world markers. (Oh, how I love reading YouTube comments. &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t look too sturdy.&#8221; &#8220;Why do you have your MPC in a box?&#8221; Apparently some people thought this was somehow insulting hip-hop. YouTube comments &#8211; pushing the very frontier of stupidity.)</p>

<h3>Doing it Yourself</h3>
<p>If you&#8217;re interested in entering the world of paper, drawing, and controllers, there are two directions I&#8217;d suggest.</p>
<p>One way to go is to simply start thinking about drawing as an interface. The creator of <a href="http://www.livelab.dk/tablet2midi.php">Tablet 2 MIDI</a>, a MIDI-graphics tablet interface, suggests that using the pen you can draw any interface you like, then map it to tablet input. That concept could certainly be applied more broadly.</p>
<p>As far as using paper and a conductive pen to doodle your own musical creations, it turns out this is one of the easiest ways to learn about resistance in electronics.</p>

<p>This project, which we covered at the end of 2007 and featured at our Handmade Music event, is ideal for giving young people (or the solder-phobic) their first step into electronics. The whole kit fits on a business card; you just need speakers to which you can connect.</p>
<p>The Drawdio project uses the same basic circuit and principle, but attaches it to a pen, making the rig a little more portable and allowing other fascinating experiments. It&#8217;s also available for purchase.</p>

<p>Cambridge-based designer Todd Vanderlin put together an elegant demonstration of the possibilities here, and his video has accordingly been making the rounds. (See: <a href="http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2009/04/28/augmented-reality-dj-scratching/">Synthtopia</a> – and I actually heard about it this morning from a <a href="http://twitter.com/andrewwienick/statuses/1639304348">high school friend</a>. The power of the Internet.) </p>

<p>There’s actually some work to this: you need to figure out how the album is spinning. And of course, because this is <em>augmented</em> reality and not reality, there’s real potential here to imagine a new kind of vinyl DJing in which normal physics don’t apply.</p>

<blockquote><p>I was playing around with some AR markers the other day and came up with this idea. taking just a plain old vinyl record and attaching an AR marker to the label you can track the record in 3D space. The next question was, can you scratch the record? </p>
<p>So by figuring out the velocity of the records rotation and applying it to the payback of the audio you can scratch. There is some digital noise that needs to bee worked out, but sounds pretty good. Its still really hard to scratch, it takes some practice but is super fun. The next step is to figure out some nice triggers for different modes. I like the idea of not needing a turntable but the actual spinning of the record helps with the scratching and playback. I made a couple modes, one where the record is paused and you can just scratch through the song. The other looks for zero velocity for x time and then continues on with the song. If there is velocity you then are scratching and the audio is affected. I think that this project has some legs can&#8217;t wait to play more.</p>

You may win on quantity and you certainly have some interesting apps, but when it comes to hardcore, deep apps with rich sounds and capabilities, the PSP has turned into a mobile music creation powerhouse. And if you think mobile music production is a novelty or a toy or only for chipmusic fans, take a good long look at PSPSEQ and Little Piggy. These are serious, grown-up trackers that can put your current computer workstation to shame. (And yes, when it comes to accurate timing, I&#8217;m afraid that includes the app-of-the-week Ableton Live.)</p>

<p><strong>This Little Piggy Went to PSP</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Little Piggy&#8221;, aka LGPT, aka Little GP Tracker (which awesomely also stands for <a href="http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/LGPT">Laser Gated and Pumped Thyristor</a>) is making its way to the PSP. Originally built for the Linux GamePark platform, creator nostromo got this LSDJ-inspired tracker working in basic form on PSP in just a <a href="http://www.gorehole.org/nostromo/2009/01/20/a-week-end-and-an-evening/">weekend and an evening</a>.</p>

<p>LGPT is inspired by LSDJ on the Game Boy, but brings some twists of its own &#8211; and is nice and easy to see on a bright PSP screen. Now, LSDJ still has its place, thanks to the unique sound of the chip on the vintage Game Boy and the absurd cheapness of those machines, but it&#8217;s still good news.</p>
<p><strong>PSPSEQ Documentation</strong></p>
<p>PSPSEQ is already mature, but it tends to baffle newcomers. And creator Ethan Bordeaux has enough DSP technique in his head that you really want to know every little detail of the software he created. He&#8217;s working on copious tutorials. They already cover basic workflow, though the real gems should be once he gets into synth editing &#8211; PSPSEQ&#8217;s synthesis capabilities can rival a lot of desktop soft synths, and you can get into tweaking sounds instantly &#8211; no messy, gimicky UI getting in your way. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got a playlist below. I&#8217;m also working on a more compact guide to getting you up and running quickly &#8211; once I digest all the work Ethan has already done.</p>
<p><strong>Updated: Watch on your PSP.</strong> Ethan sends along a video with direct-downloadable tutorial videos that should play nicely on a PSP. (Ethan recommends the homebrew video player PSPlayer, or you can try a conversion utility like the free PSP Player. Of course, you can&#8217;t watch and use at the same time, so you may wind up loading these elsewhere.)</p>

<p>What&rsquo;s new in the world of music technological creations? It&rsquo;s stunning how much people are creating in their private workshops and bedrooms. I&rsquo;m pleased to have the chance to share it virtually here, and Thursday night in person in New York City. </p>
<p>We&rsquo;re proud that Handmade Music returns to Brooklyn&rsquo;s 3rd Ward this Thursday, presented by createdigitalmusic.com with <a href="http://xlr8r.com/">XLR8R.com</a>, <a href="makezine.com">Make</a>, and <a href="http://etsy.com">Etsy.com</a> and sponsored by <strong>Pabst Blue Ribbon</strong>. <h3>Dueling Gestural Interfaces</h3>

<p>We have not one but two fascinating takes on gestural objects as music controllers. Brian Kerr is bringing his research into new dynamic interfaces for music, drawing upon an academic background in industrial design, as M Bethancourt brings the Gesture-Controller Exploration 2 (GCE-2).</p>
<p><strong>Mouse &amp; the Billionaire (M Bethancourt): GCE-2</strong></p>
<p>M Bethancourt has created a really gorgeous object, so I&rsquo;m eager to see it in action. Check out the site for research, presentations, ideas for use, and more. And clearly we have to get Mouse &amp; the Billionaire and Brian Kerr together &ndash; they&rsquo;re working on similar lines, so they&rsquo;ll either learn from each other or break out into a big gestural music battle. (or, ideally, both!)</p>
<blockquote><p>The Gesture-Controller Exploration is an ongoing study in innovative musical controllers that explores the relationship between movement, physical space and musical performance. The most recent incarnation is the GCE-2 (Gesture-Controller Exploration 2). Dipping, swinging, swaying, tilting, and turning the The GCE-2 sends signals to the computer, informing its sound-making functions. This allows for a more satisfying performance experience, leveraging the power of the computer and helping the electronic musician to use physical means to create and manipulate digital electronic sounds in new and interesting ways.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m currently completing my industrial design masters thesis at Pratt Institute. My working thesis title is, Dynamic Musical Interfaces. I&#8217;ve started to document my first prototype, which is a wireless gestural controller for Max/MSP. One of my main goals with this project is to create an physically expressive performance device for computer music that is engaging for both the performer as well as the audience.</p>

<p>I love that Brian&rsquo;s design was able to make use of a 3D printer, because I believe someday these will be as commonplace as the Canon multifunction sitting on my desk. Brian writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>I worked in the parametric 3D CAD program, <a href="http://www.solidworks.com/">SolidWorks </a>to design the exterior casing of my controller. After it was built in with this software environment, I converted the file into an STL format and printed it out with a <a href="http://www.dimensionprinting.com/">3D printer</a>. The bottom of the controller has a potentiometer joining the half sphere with the upper section. To stabilize this connection, I built a pair of channels into each of the parts and inserted little plastic ball bearings for support (I&#8217;ll add photos of this later).</p>

<p>Richie Brown says he&rsquo;ll have to see how much he can carry with him on the train from New Jersey, but he&rsquo;s got a stockpile of wonderful technology oddities he&rsquo;s created. He writes:</p>

<p>Rucyl is already a favorite on this site for her terrific creations, like this over-the-shoulder, wearable (if not <em>so</em> animal rights-friendly) snakeskin-and-leather MIDI controller. I believe she&rsquo;s bringing this along, </p>

<p>Walk-ins of unusual creations are encouraged. The Make crew usually bring some of their stuff in. Machine+1 has promised &ldquo;An atmospheric guitar and synth deluge- in the fashion of live looping- using custom, handmade footswitch controllers triggering software.&rdquo;</p>
<p>There&rsquo;s usually some surprise I didn&rsquo;t expect. You really are encouraged to bring out stuff you&rsquo;re working on, even if it&rsquo;s not yet awesome / functional. Hopefully we can do some of this sharing and learning increasingly online, as well.</p>

<p>Yes, for the record, that is a young woman screaming to the sounds of AudioMulch. Believe. </p>
<p>Jordan Harris was able to snag some screenshots of <strong>Girl Talk&rsquo;s rig</strong>. There&rsquo;s not much to tell: a laptop, a mouse, and in a sign of the growing stature of Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis), some very practical plastic wrap to protect the machine. What&rsquo;s unique about Gregg&rsquo;s work is that this computer doesn&rsquo;t clear out the room: it attracts screaming throngs of fans. Especially lady fans, proof that this does not have to be a sport for boys. (As it happens, I find they also like watching American NFL football. Poor girls; everyone is convinced they know what they want but don&rsquo;t ask.)</p>
<p>Every music tool is supposed to have celebrity users, right? Well, <strong>AudioMulch</strong> definitely can claim Girl Talk. This $89, currently Windows-only tool (yes, <a href="http://www.audiomulch.com/faq.htm#VistaCompatibility" target="_blank">Vista-compatible</a>) has long had an underground following. It&rsquo;s a real-time modular synthesis, composition, and performance tool, which you might suppose would put it in the same category as the likes of Reaktor and Max/MSP. Unlike those tools, though, its modules are laser-focused on certain sonic capabilities. There are ready-made objects for live performance control, and unique, handy tools for setting up envelopes and sequences. It&rsquo;s got fantastic pre-built effects like a delay line granulator and live looper. And because AudioMulch is also a VST host, it could be your one and only environment. </p>
<p>AudioMulch is the software equivalent of that deceptively cute little rally car that blows more impressive-looking cars off the road.</p>
<p>Version 2.0 is due early next year with new features and Mac compatibility. </p>
<p>GearWire did a fantastic <a href="http://www.gearwire.com/audiomulch.html" target="_blank">video tutorial series on AudioMulch</a> last year.</p>
<p><strong>PCs</strong> are computers that look ugly and don&rsquo;t have slick ads with popular songs playing in the background. People believe they&rsquo;re not used for music, but they are, often by musicians who actually play stuff life (yes, even with a mouse as a controller) rather than playing backing tracks from inside space-alien props.</p>
<p><strong>Plastic wrap</strong>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_wrap" target="_blank">according to Wikipedia</a>,&ldquo;is a thin plastic film typically used for sealing food items in containers to keep them fresh.&rdquo; Going by the popular brand name Saran, the 1953 invention was not originally designed to protect computers from beer. But if you play music that people like to dance to and you typically see beer bottles around (note the unprotected shot below), it may be an important music technology accessory. <strong>Update: </strong>According to an interview, the Saran Wrap is there to protect Gregg&rsquo;s laptop from .. Gregg? So, either he&rsquo;s lying about the sweaty hands to sound extra awesome, or he really does have some sweat issues. I can&rsquo;t say I&rsquo;ve ever worried about my hands the way I&rsquo;ve worried about beer. (And I tend not to have those screaming, drunken fans, even.) Hot venues? Hot laptop, powered up to full crunching audio signal? Gregg, if you&rsquo;re out there, inquiring minds&hellip;</p>

<p>There are some good shots there showing just the size of the crowd who came out to see this guy use his laptop on a cheap folding plastic table.&#160; This was a private invite only party, but his show at the Newport Music Hall in January is already sold out.&#160; </p>

<p>Jaymis at Create Digital Motion was admiring this video and watching the Lemur action at the beginning. It further inspires me to custom-install a touch overlay on my laptop, which isn&rsquo;t terribly expensive &ndash; having touch in a live playing situation is really quite nice.</p>
<p>But as I watched the video and its modular synth action and Novation gear, I actually found myself thinking about something else: why aren&rsquo;t more bands this tight? Most importantly, why don&rsquo;t more bands simply <em>use in-ear monitors </em>when they&rsquo;re working? Lots of bands now are adding drum machines again, working with more complex rhythms and harmonies, mixing electronic and acoustic elements. Yet you&rsquo;ll often see them playing live trying to stay together with a monitor on the floor, and they not surprisingly go out of tune and out of step.</p>
<p>Shure makes a number of fairly affordable models with different in-ear attachments for adapting to different situations. Frankly, just about anything would work. There&rsquo;s also no crime to routing a separate output with a click track. That&rsquo;s something even a lot of &ldquo;serious music&rdquo; contemporary composers are doing these days. It&rsquo;s not always the right answer, but there are now situations across genres where it makes sense.</p>
<p>The main thing is, set up so you can take advantage of the musicianship you&rsquo;ve got. And on that note, while readers here regularly knock Nine Inch Nails &ndash; something along the lines of, &ldquo;if they weren&rsquo;t NIN, you wouldn&rsquo;t care&rdquo; &ndash; imagine if you <em>hadn&rsquo;t</em> heard of this band. They&rsquo;re an extraordinary group of musicians. Plenty of brilliant musicians labor in obscurity, but it is comforting to know that some of the light of fame is hitting people who can play amazingly well.</p>
<p>Now, sing along: &ldquo;You will never ever ever ever / own this much gear.&rdquo;</p>
<p>What? That&rsquo;s not what they&rsquo;re singing?</p>
<p>(Actually, the lyrics &ldquo;You will never ever ever ever get to me in here&rdquo; can <em>also</em> work nicely on the door to your music studio.)</p>
