CDM’s resident expert in indie music Atariboy is back with still more selections from the world of indie music. Get those headphones ready. -PK

Here we are again. The third installment of dithered is the new black, albeit,
3 weeks late

I like albums. I like the end to end experience instead of just listening
to a bunch of single tracks. So if a blog came along offering a new free album
a day, I’d be all over it. Ooohh [a
link!] *Cris
jumps all over it*

Speaking of jumping, there is nothing like some disco to
get you up. So from
the above blog, I must point out Cuebism’s
Circle EP.
Discofunkcut-upalicious! (and so is the CD cover art)

Fellow Melbournian, Terminal Sound System is working on a new album (correction,
3 albums!) at the moment and has 2 really nice samples [1 & 2].
In a similar vein his EP that I found a couple of years back.
I like his description so much,
I’ll just quote that: “Shredded free-jazzisms and glitched-up freeform dub,
like some kind of freebase way-too-obscure art wank film soundtrack, sinister
and gleefully irritating.” Yep…
thats it Direct link from archive.org – .zip.

KEXP,
a community radio station coming out of the University of Washington has
really nicely embraced podcasting (for a radio station). They have
2 podcasts – 1 is for sets of full length songs from independant artists in
the Pacific Northwest area (USA) [feed
link] and the 2nd is for recordings
of in-studio
performances
from artists from a variety of artists [feed
link] – The first one being from the Boom
Bap Project. Ed: KEXP is great; my other favorite West Coast radio station, KCRW, has also gone to podcasting, but sans ANY music. Damn music industry lawyers. -PK

While not music, another radio station doing good things with podcasting is
ABC Radio National here in Australia. They offer podcasts of a lot of their
original
content
such and audio documentaries and interviews to book reviews and law advice.
Check ‘em out.

Let me know if you have any more suggestions, especially other radio stations
that are embracing podcasts and proper audio downloads. That is, not
annoying crappy Real Audio streams for example.

We welcome back Cris atariboy Pearson, the Melbourne-based musician and plasq developer/artist, for another installment of Dithered is The New Black. He’ll be checking in weekly with great independent music, much of it free, for taking your playlists to new places:

Hey all. Welcome back to the second edition for this new column. Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.

This first site is not direct suggestion, but a great way to discover lots of
music. It is a communal site that allows you to share and download
playlists
other people have put together. These playlists point to MP3s found for free
all over the Net: Webjay.com

A lot of you probably already know about magnatune.
There is a wealth of great music to be found there. Being addicted to the cello,
I must point you to Claire Fitch’s two albums on magnatune. Ambiencellist 1 & 2 – both great albums to bliss and chill out to. magnatune also offer compilation
albums of each ‘genre’ to give you a selection of their wares.

Now a suggested link I received after last weeks column. Sam at soplerfo.com has
a couple of really nice releases licensed under Creative Commons so check them
out. I know I’ll be listening to these some more. I also spied this link on
his news page to Gamelan
Angklung music. After the jump is 3 tracks by 3 winners of a 1989 contest
by Bali Records. Really great stuff and if you like that, scope out the rest
of that site, lots of great
stuff. Ed: Check out that whole site for all kinds of Asian classical music — the kind you find on cassettes from the region. Great stuff! -PK

Finally, if you want more net music food, check out Mark Teppo’s column, BITFLASHING over
at the ever great, igloomag.

G’day, pleased to meet you – This is the first installation of ‘dithered is the new black’, a weekly column about all the great music one can find online – usually for free. I’m atariboy. (Cris Pearson in ‘real life’) I make music (see atariboy.com) and design software
(see plasq.com).

Lets get to it . . . Starting with an all time fave of mine, I found this compilation a couple of years ago and has remained a consistent listener since. Mellow electronic with some
‘indie’ and
‘pop’
thrown in and lots of yummy melodies. Grab Electronikshire at
IUMA. You’ll find more info at the Electronikshire homepage, but the mp3 links are broken so use the IUMA link to download. (Read more)

I’m a regular on em411.com so I listen to a lot of music from the people there. Two of those people, fell and
aem (another
electronic musician) have released on the net label, en:peg. Fell’s release is a spaced out dub jazz experiment. Very deep, full of layers
and plenty of head nodding moments. aem’s creation, ‘decompose’ is a long,
1hour 18minute, seamless blend of clicks, ambient textures and slow melody.
Minimal and beautiful. Both these are available for only $2 a pop, as are all en:peg releases — thoroughly worth it too. aem also has a free EP on the great net label, Hippocamp.
Grab that via Archive.org. Expect his new full length, ‘use’ on the n5md label
in October.

Also, you might want to have a stab at en:peg’s remix
contest — score an iPod mini if you win. Hurry, though — the contest ends July 15.

Finally, you can get em411 members releases as a podcast RSS
feed.

That should keep you busy

Now it would be silly to think just one
person could find all the great online music, so please send me links that
you think I should
check out. See you next week.

Ed: Thanks, Cris — really looking forward to this column over the coming weeks! And in the meantime, thanks for all the new listening. Readers, let us know what you think! Use the contact editor form to send us music you think Cris might want to cover and I’ll make sure he gets your message. -PK
