<p>How do you visualize the invisible? How do expose a process with multiple parameters in a way that&#8217;s straightforward and musically intuitive? Can messing about with granular sound feel like touching that sound &#8211; something untouchable?</p>
<p>Music&#8217;s ephemeral, unseeable quality, and the ways we approach sound in computer music in similarly abstract ways, are part of the pleasure of making noise. But working out how to then design around that can be equally satisfying. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s wonderful to see work like the upcoming Borderlands for iPad and desktop. It solves a problem familiar to computer users &#8211; designing an interface for a granular playback instrument &#8211; but does so in a way that&#8217;s uncommonly clear. And with free code and research sharing, it could help inspire other projects, too.</p>
<p>Its creator also reminds, us, though, that the impetus for all of this can be the quest for beautiful sound.<span id="more-23629"></span></p>
<p>Creator Chris Carlson is publishing source code and a presentation for the NIME [New Interfaces for Musical Expression] conference. But this isn&#8217;t just an academic problem or a fun design exercise: he also uses this tool in performance, so the design is informed by those needs. (I&#8217;m especially attuned to this particular problem, as I was recently mucking about with a Pd patch of mine that did similar things, working out how to perform with it and what the interface should look like. I know I&#8217;m not alone, either.)</p>
<p>The basic function of the app: load up a selection of audio clips, and the software distributes them graphically in the interface. Next:</p>
<blockquote><p>A &#8220;grain cloud&#8221; may be added to the screen under the current mouse position with the press of a key. This cloud has an internal timing system that triggers individual grain voices in sequence. The user has control over the number of grain voices in a cloud, the overlap of these grains, the duration, the pitch, the window/envelope, and the extent of random motion in the XY plane. By selecting a cloud and moving it over a rectangle, the sound contained in the rectangle will be sampled at the relative position of each grain voice as it is triggered. By moving the cloud in along the dimension of the rectangle that is orthogonal to the time dimension, the amplitude of the resulting grain bursts changes.</p></blockquote>

<p>Beyond the technology, beyond this design I admire, anything that sends you on the path to making beautiful sound seems to be a worthy exercise. It&#8217;s a challenge you can face every day and never grow tired.</p>

Co-creator Giuseppe Sorce points us to the work:</p>
<blockquote><p>This is a simple generative music synthesizer built in Max/MSP created by Diego Caponera, Nicolò Paternoster and Giuseppe Sorce. It involves 5 FM generators which play notes randomly based on a root key and intervals defined by the user. It&#8217;s an university project made for an exam for Sound&#8217;s Science degree ( Math Department of Roma Tor Vergata ).</p>
<p>The software is distributed &#8220;as is&#8221;, without any warranty, under a GPL license.</p></blockquote>
<p>Not bad for an exam project. A heck of a lot more fun than a paper (and, believe me, I say that wholeheartedly having done a bit of university teaching). </p>

<p>LA-based bang Fol Chen (Asthmatic Kitty records) wanted to go beyond the computer as the playback and manipulation device for their music. So they worked with collaborators to invent a solution. In a new video, sounds, and an interview, we can share some of how this came into being.</p>
<p>Built with the <a href="http://monome.org">monome</a> creators (Brian Crabtree and Kelli Cain) and LA research and experimentation center <a href="http://machineproject.com/">Machine Project</a>, the Tetrafol is a custom, pyramidal sound device. The object warps Fol Chen&#8217;s music using gestural manipulation of playback, but can also use your own samples. And with open-source circuit and firmware, the project could be an opportunity to learn or to build your own creation. </p>
<p>Description:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Tetrafol is a hand-held tangible electronic sound toy. Circuits enclosed by a wooden tetrahedron detect orientation and motion-gestures to modify the playback of a collection of Fol Chen&#8217;s micro-compositions, allowing the user to explore sound through physical manipulation.</p>
<p>The battery-powered device has its own internal speaker but can additionally be hooked up to a headphone or amplifier.</p>
<p>The circuit and firmware are based on open-source hardware and is itself published as open-source, allowing anyone interested to learn about its deepest inner-workings.</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>CDM: How did this collaboration come about? How did you work together?</strong></p>
<p><strong>brian: </strong>kelli and i have a loving and working relationship with machineproject, a phenomenal organization founded by our good friend mark allen. we&#8217;re always amazed at the fantastical variety of projects that are born there. a few inspiring works of recent include a cash machine designed for a children&#8217;s museum and a workshop on lockpicking. so when mark approached us on behalf of his good friend adam goldman and adam&#8217;s band fol chen regarding a possible collaboration we were all ears. the goal was to design and produce some sort of synthesizer-sampler-effect-instrument-toy-object to accompany the release of their new album. that was about a year ago and we&#8217;re happy to see it finalized and soon in playful hands.</p>
<p>in the early stages there was much whittling of ideas (too expensive, too complicated, etc). we arrived at some sort of gestural sample player and a demo video was ready to show the proof of concept (we live on opposite coasts so there was much back and forth through internets and mails) the basic build used a waveshield (by adafruit) and an arduino and some very hacky code i modified.</p>
<p>fol chen provided the sound set. kelli and i proposed a series of enclosures&#8211; diamonds, stars, ice cream cones, d20. the tetrahedron ended up being the most beautifully minimal, and incidentally the most cost effective. our friend jason voytilla laser cut a prototype from thin birch ply and we sent the &#8220;finished&#8221; sample to california where it underwent a series of intense focus groups &#8211; thanks to the rigorous machineproject laboratories. after more back and forth, and basic design changes here and there we were in agreement. we used our very reliable production chain that we depend on for monome releases&#8230; it was nice really helpful to have that all in place and sped up the process considerably.</p>
<p>the tetrafol accompanies the release of some exciting new fol chen tracks, and there will be a release party of sorts in early december at machineproject. should be very interesting, as the current installation is a 30 foot deep window sill of sorts.</p>

<p><strong>What went into the design? The construction of the thing?</strong></p>
<p>the final circuit board is an <a href="http://arduino.cc">arduino</a>, [Lady Ada - Limor Fried] <a href="http://www.ladyada.net/make/waveshield/">waveshield</a>, and accelerometer smashed together and made very small. i really just put existing technologies together&#8211; i can&#8217;t take a lot of credit here.</p>
<p>the industrial design was more fun. we didn&#8217;t want to use plastic so we experimented with felt and wood. coming up with a size, shape, and feel were the main goals- to create something that was pleasant to hold and sturdy enough to be tossed in the air.</p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s the basic notion of the instrument?</strong></p>
<p>it plays sound loops, or &#8220;micro-compositions&#8221; written by fol chen. when you pick up and tilt the device it modifies playback: in one axis it changes the playback speed, in the other it triggers a variable-speed stutter (playback position jump). sounds are changed by a shaking motion. given the response is immediate, it comes alive very quickly.</p>
<p>i&#8217;d also hesitate to endorse it as an Instrument, though it&#8217;s very playable. it&#8217;s a bit like a responsive <a href="http://www.fm3buddhamachine.com/v2/">buddha box</a>.</p>

<p>i posted the firmware/hardware source on github. there is a no &#8220;build your own&#8221; guide as you&#8217;d be much better off just looking at the waveshield documentation (which is very good.)</p>
<p>this was a fun collaborative side project&#8211; and it makes me even more curious to see how musicians continue to create tangible objects to accompany their releases.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve followed open source hardware &#8211; and generally hardware that is more open to user customization and modification &#8211; on this site since the beginning. As I prepare for a talk on the <a href="http://meeblip.com">MeeBlip</a> at Berlin&#8217;s Create Art &#038; Technology Conference, though, I think it&#8217;s time to do a proper survey of the hardware that&#8217;s out there.</p>
<p>The ability to modify music gear is something that&#8217;s important to a lot of people as musicians. It means the ability to learn how the technology we use works, and therefore to have a deeper musical and compositional understanding of it. And it can mean the ability to make music hardware more expressive of your sonic imagination and creative ideas. Finally, it adds an additional avenue through which you can share your understanding and use and modification of musical instruments with other people.</p>

<p><strong>A Spectrum of &#8220;Open&#8221; in Music Gear</strong></p>
<p>Even proprietary hardware can become more &#8220;open&#8221; in the general sense. In the early days of synths, it was commonplace to include detailed specifications and even circuit diagrams. That arguably furthered the evolution of music gear, as knowledge was shared, and it certainly allowed more advanced users to better understand how that gear worked. We&#8217;ve seen a subtle return to those days, with examples like Korg&#8217;s Monotron and MonoTribe hardware, for which the company released schematics.</p>
<p>The viral, revolutionary spread of the monome design owes in part a community built around modification, access to critical schematics, and some open sourced software which the community took and modified. The monome, however, focuses on a fully open-source protocol and availability to schematics. Those schematics are not free for use in your own creations, which has sometimes caused friction as makers sell modified or homebrewed variants of the monome. On the other hand, many in the monome community value the handcrafted original hardware and don&#8217;t particularly want &#8220;clones&#8221; and the like, and have found the available information more than enough to fuel their musical needs.</p>
<p>Open Source Hardware goes further, by placing everything under a license that makes it free for use. This would include the software (either running on the device, on an attached computer, or both), the schematics of the design, and even visual elements of the design, as well as the documentation. Projects that give their users the most freedom to work with any modifications they make also allow for unfettered commercial use; that is, you don&#8217;t have to worry if you sell a few, or even many, if you run afoul of the project&#8217;s original creators. Without going into the debate for or against such an approach, if this kind of sharing is your goal, then it follows it will important for you to make that freedom explicit. This sort of explicit use is also what is described in the Open Source Hardware definition, which our MeeBlip project has adopted because we feel the project and definition fit one another.</p>
<p>Note that there&#8217;s a very real debate about whether the ideals of free software are applicable to open source hardware. There&#8217;s no debating it&#8217;s an apples-to-oranges comparison: copying hardware means physically manufacturing something. (I&#8217;m surprised to see, in German, the use of the term <a href="http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freie_Hardware"><em>Freie Hardware</em></a>, which has generally been avoided in English. See also the <a href="http://www.ohanda.org/">Open Source Hardware and Design Alliance</a>, which goes beyond some of these specific &#8211; and possibly not-really-applicable &#8211; licenses.)</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll say this: I think adding in the issues of economics, materials, sustainability, local manufacture, labor, distribution, and international trade make this question <em>more</em> compelling for discussion. It&#8217;s messier than software, yes &#8211; but given that all software relies on hardware on which to run, dealing with these messy and often demanding questions means engaging more of the many dimensions in which technology interacts with economics.</p>

Amusingly, the MeeBlip continues flying under the radar as an open source hardware project, but once we actually get our shipping picture in place over the next couple of weeks, maybe we can work on that.</p>
<p><strong>Let&#8217;s See the Gear!</strong></p>
<p>But first, we just need to find out what&#8217;s out there. And that&#8217;s where you come in. If you&#8217;ve got a project, or use a project, or just know about a project, let us know. If it&#8217;s your own project &#8211; especially if you feel we&#8217;ve ignored you in the past (trust me, you don&#8217;t want to see my inbox or brain) &#8211; now&#8217;s your chance to tell us about it.</p>
<p>Because it&#8217;s the narrowest and most sharply-defined category, I&#8217;m most interested in those projects that fit the Open Source Hardware definition &#8211; not for philosophical reasons so much as taxonomic ones. But other projects are welcome, too; I&#8217;d like to hear about them.</p>
<p><strong>About that MeeBlip&#8230;</strong></p>
<p>And we&#8217;ll have the first of a series of updates on the MeeBlip project later this week. (The new SE and micro projects, and updated firmware, as well as vastly-expanded documentation, are all due soon, held up only by international shipping, weather, and illness challenges I&#8217;ll describe later.)</p>

<p>Light-up grids of buttons are nearly commonplace, but the BlipBox is something different: its array of lights is also a sensor, making it both X/Y controller and light-up grid. And it&#8217;s designed to be completely open &#8212; firmware, hardware, schematics and documentation are all fully GPL-licensed and open source. </p>
<p>For those of us who aren&#8217;t ninja coders, it&#8217;s also easy to customize, thanks to <a href="http://blipbox.org/blog/2011/08/23/blipzones-screenshots/">friendly software</a> (pictured below) .k for making nifty interactive animations on its display and support for the artist-friendly Processing code environment. As the creators describe it, it&#8217;s three (three!) pieces of hardware in one:</p>

<p>It had to happen &#8212; button triggering, as popularized by the monome, here meets a conventional two-channel DJ mixer. But the layout I must say is quite spare and lovely, the work of the Japanese-based PICnome project. Furthermore, it&#8217;s Open Source Hardware, covered as I have recommended by a ShareAlike Creative Commons license (with no commercial restrictions) and GPL v3. (The creator prefers the term &#8220;Free Hardware,&#8221; which I love theoretically but have avoided for fear of people demanding we mail them <a href="http://meeblip.com">MeeBlips</a> by sending us a self-addressed, stamped box.)</p>
<p>With clean, subtle markings and a nicely-composed layout, it&#8217;s hardware that doesn&#8217;t scream out its design with big decals or overblown features. It&#8217;s just a (colored) grid controller, similar to the monome, combined with controller setup laid out as a two-channel mixer, with the sorts of features you&#8217;d expect of each. I love the angled labels, at least aesthetically. (I should note that this is not related to the monome project; the monome is not open source hardware, though it works via open software and commercially-restricted availability to some schematics. It is, of course, deserving of credit for inspiring a whole generation of hardware.)</p>
<p>The controller works with both OSC (OpenSoundControl) and MIDI for maximum flexibility. And, incidentally, this could be an ideal live visual controller, too, especially with that native OSC support. </p>
<p>Good grief; I realize I filled this post with nothing but technical jargon. Hopefully, those of you who speak in such tongue-twisted terms have followed along, and everyone else just looked at the pretty pictures and video.</p>

<p><strong>Update:</strong> Read in comments about some lingering frustration that the original PICnome project was derived from the monome; since the monome doesn&#8217;t permit the sale of derivative designs, that could be viewed as an abuse of the available specifications for the monome. In this case, based on what I see, however, I&#8217;m hard pressed to see this product as being subject to the same criticism by virtue of having buttons, unless there&#8217;s some detail I&#8217;m missing. If I am missing something, please let me know.</p>
<p>By the way, if you want to revisit the PICnome project and decide for yourself, <a href="http://post.monome.org/comments.php?DiscussionID=3843">that thread is still on the monome community</a>. It&#8217;s not accurate to say as some commenters do that the PICnome was a &#8220;bootleg&#8221; or simple clone of the monome, as it was re-implemented on a PIC chip. The issue is that the product was then made available for sale, because it was built on monome schematics; while those are readily available, they are not licensed for this kind of use. The firmware <em>is</em> free for use; it&#8217;s covered under a GPL license, which is non-revocable. However, to my knowledge, those same concerns may not necessarily apply to this project.</p>
<p>To recap: the PICnome project indeed is technically incompatible with the intentions and licensing of the monome project, but the new PICratchBox should be fine. So, here&#8217;s to the PICratchBox, which is more interesting precisely because it&#8217;s something new.</p>
<p>It is my view that the original PICnome project violated the terms of the licensing of the schematics; whether because of a misunderstanding or not, that&#8217;s not something to condone. But the new project does not do so, in my view. I contacted monome&#8217;s Brian Crabtree and while we didn&#8217;t have an on-the-record conversation, he took no issue with that statement.</p>

<p>Music notation software has long been seen as a two-horse race, a Pepsi versus Coke stand-off between Finale and Sibelius. But not only are there other alternatives, too, here&#8217;s one tool that&#8217;s making free and open source notation viable. I&#8217;ve spoken previously about engraving tool <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2010/05/lilypond-free-beautiful-music-notation-engraving-for-anyone/">Lilypond</a>, but it&#8217;s not entirely graphical, even with GUI front ends. MuseScore will look more familiar to users of something like Sibelius, and just as the latter released a major upgrade, it also had a big 1.1 release with major new enhancements.</p>
<p>MuseScore has a robust notation engine, capable feature set, and it&#8217;s even catching on in a number of <a href="http://musescore.org/en/about/references">academic institutions around the world</a>. There&#8217;s an <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/musescore-sheet-music-viewer/id442702245?mt=8">iPad-based score reader</a>, which in turn is a revenue source (no reason open source software can&#8217;t generate income). You can enter music with keyboard, mouse, or MIDI, use the usual complement of symbols and layout features, and import and export both MusicXML and Standard MIDI files. You won&#8217;t find a big orchestral sample library as in Sibelius 7 and Finale&#8217;s Garritan-based sounds, but there&#8217;s still support for soft synth playback, and you can run for free on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It&#8217;s been translated into some 43 languages and counts more than 2500 downloads daily.</p>

<p>Given the coincidence of Sibelius and MuseScore getting their upgrades at the same time, I asked the MuseScore developers directly how they thought they compared. Let&#8217;s bring on the fighting words &#8211; after all, a little friendly competition drives better tools. (Ask the engineers on contests like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Wars_(TV_series)">Robot Wars</a>.)</p>
<p>Improved interoperability also means you don&#8217;t have to choose sides. With MusicXML import/export in MuseScore and recently expanded in Sibelius 7, you can exchange files between the two tools &#8211; as you should. (After all, the whole point of notation is the ability for anyone to read it &#8212; for the exchange of ideas.)</p>
<p>First, here&#8217;s what&#8217;s new in MuseScore 1.1, with improvements like jazz and lead sheet functionality:<span id="more-19991"></span></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Lead sheet enhancements</strong>, including MuseJazz jazz font, chord symbols on bars without notes, keyboard shortcuts for moving between bars, more chord symbols, and slash notation (via a plug-in) &#8230; see the <a href="http://musescore.org/en/node/11723">beginner</a> and <a href="http://musescore.org/en/node/11726">advanced</a> tutorials, and separate blog post.</li>
<li><strong>Connect</strong> is a Web-baed social feature for sharing scores, checking out tutorials, and following Twitter MuseScore discussion, all within the program. (Actually, I&#8217;m surprised more music software doesn&#8217;t do something like this.)</li>
<li><strong>Improved stability and reliability</strong>, including 60 bug fixes. To be honest, that&#8217;s probably what has held me back from spending much time with MuseScore, so I&#8217;m intrigued. This isn&#8217;t a review, but I&#8217;ll have to do some scoring work so I can try it out.</li>

<p>MuseScore isn&#8217;t as fully-functional as tools like Sibelius and Finale. For may purposes, it will do the job; it just lacks some of their maturity and extensive feature set, which means you should research its current features if you have particular notational needs. But that&#8217;s changing. On the roadmap for a more significant version 2.0 are critical notation features like tablature, and linked parts so you can edit music simultaneously in extracted parts and full score.</p>
<h3>Sibelius versus MuseScore?</h3>
<p>I asked MuseScore developer Thomas Bonte to follow up on how MuseScore relates to Sibelius with news of the two coinciding:</p>

<blockquote><p>Well first off all, we have to be honest about it, Sibelius is a superb product. Many of my friends use it and I dropped the ambition to convert them to MuseScore <img src='http://createdigitalmusic.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  However I learned that every year there is a new group of aspiring musicians following music education. The way we see it, is that MuseScore is growing up together with them.</p>
<p>MuseScore strongest selling proposition against Sibelius and others is it&#8217;s price: $0. While that seems an unbeatable price, MuseScore faces very steep competition from pirated versions of Sibelius or Finale. When I go around in music conservatories and I ask who has a legal version, only the teacher raises a hand. So MuseScore needs to do better than just the price and that&#8217;s where the Open Source kicks in.</p>
<p>If you look at it economically, it&#8217;s all about reducing production costs. <a href="http://translate.musescore.org/">Translations</a>, <a href="http://musescore.org/en/handbook">documentation</a>, <a href="http://musescore.org/en/handbook/file-format">import &#038; export filters</a>, <a href="http://musescore.org/en/plugins">plugins</a>, &#8230; The only thing we (the core team) need to take care off is that the contributor community can work together. To facilitate this collaboration, we invested a tremendous amount of time in building a full featured community website on musescore.org using Drupal CMS. It is the main reason why the contributor community around MuseScore has doubled every release, up to <a href="http://musescore.org/en/musescore-1.0">150 people for 1.0</a>. You may have an open source project, but without people, that means nothing. And that&#8217;s how we really compete. With our community of contributors and users. The former improves the product, the latter does the promotion.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s just a matter of time before MuseScore can handle professional typesetting work. Via initiatives such as the <a href="http://kck.st/opengoldberg">Open Goldberg project</a>, we want to show that MuseScore is getting ready for more demanding work.<br />

<p>One more thingy related to Sibelius: finally, Sibelius 7 has MusicXML export on board! A huge amount of users were asking us how they could convert their Sibelius files to MuseScore. (e.g. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/caleb.foreman/posts/10150374776437678">https://www.facebook.com/caleb.foreman/posts/10150374776437678</a> ) The Dolet plugin was obviously way overpriced to be a democratic solution. This is a huge relief now for e.g. educators, who have lots of material in Sibelius and wanted to convert it for their students who are using MuseScore. </p></blockquote>
<p>Some of Sibelius 7&#8242;s features do have comparable features in MuseScore &#8211; and in some instances, MuseScore was first. Thomas observes:</p>
<blockquote><p>MuseScore had a tabbed document interface (like a web browser) since the start of the project<br />
MuseScore is of course native 64 bit (if compiled on a 64 bit machine)<br />
PDF export has also been there from the beginning<br />
Multi core playback is not available in MuseScore but the synthesizer runs in a second thread (so at least dual core)<br />
MuseScore had import of SVG images since many years now<br />
Upcoming MuseScore 2.0 has full screen support</p></blockquote>
<p>Version 2.0 is likely to be the big release, in my mind; we&#8217;ll be watching. Thomas says they&#8217;re also working on improved branding and visual appearance in preparation for that release, and all of this is boosted, he says, by revenue from the iPad score reader. That makes an interesting new model for free and open source software.</p>
<p>A side note, as my biggest criticism of the free engraving tool <a href="http://lilypond.org/">Lilypond</a> at the moment is its lack of two-way MusicXML file interchange. Thomas notes:</p>
<blockquote><p>MuseScore has been able <a href="http://musescore.org/en/blog/2008/09/04/musescore-read-and-writes-musicxml-20-including-compressed-mxl-format">read and write MusicXML for several years now</a>.</p>
<p>MuseScore exports Lilypond. It used to have Lilypond import as well, but that was dropped in 0.9.6 because it was better to spend out limited resources on improving MusicXML import. We expected to see MusicXML export in Lilypond anyway, but apparently that&#8217;s far from trivial since it still didn&#8217;t happen.</p></blockquote>
<p>And what about compatibility for <a href="http://code.google.com/p/abcjs/">ABCjs</a>, a JavaScript-powered, text-based notation format so simple it&#8217;s been implemented on mobile phones and Web browsers?</p>
<blockquote><p>Yes there is. And the way this works is a very nice example of how hackable MuseScore is. It&#8217;s written out nicely <a href="http://musescore.org/en/node/2851">in this post here</a> but basically what happens is: a plugin in MuseScore let&#8217;s you browse for the ABC file, it then sends the ABC file to a web service at <a href="http://abc2xml.appspot.com">http://abc2xml.appspot.com</a> which is made by one of the MuseScore developers, and finally that web service sends MusicXML back. Et voilà. (Note: as stated on the announcement: The webservice uses ABC4J. ABC4J supports ABC 1.6 only)</p></blockquote>

<p>This may help you to get an idea where MuseScore is and where version 2.0 is heading.</p>
<p>One note: MusicXML export is not available in Sibelius Student or First. Only in Sibelius 7. Bummer.</p></blockquote>
<p>I think it should be plainly obvious: there&#8217;s room for more than one notation tool. There&#8217;s room for more than <em>two</em> notation tools. Competition between tools can drive capabilities forward, and better motivate tools to match what users need. Free and proprietary tools can both learn from one another, and even exchange files &#8211; there isn&#8217;t a gulf between free and open source and proprietary as some may have found in the past. The availability of better tools means the expanded ability of musicians to express themselves.</p>
<p>And MuseScore is becoming a viable option for notation. That can only be a good thing. If you use it in your work &#8211; or you have anything you&#8217;d like to share about how you create digital &#8230; scores &#8211; we&#8217;d love to hear from you.</p>

<p>MilkyTracker, the free and open source GPL tracker tool, is now available on Android, thanks to some cross-platform goodness. (Developers: see <a href="https://github.com/pelya/commandergenius">SDL-lib</a>, which brings a flexible multimedia library to Android and enables a host of multimedia and games, and the <a href="http://developer.android.com/sdk/ndk/index.html">NDK</a>, Google&#8217;s JNI-based toolset for C/C++ on the platform.)</p>
<p>So, what does this mean? It means a tool already available on an absurd number of platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, Windows Mobile, and even Amiga), and build-able on more, gets one additional platform. Whether it&#8217;s actually useful to have a traditional tracker on your mobile phone is another matter, and that I suspect comes down to whether you&#8217;ve either got a) an integrated physical keyboard on your device, or b) an incredible amount of patience. (Or, maybe c) you&#8217;re a magician, and have fingers that can operate this interface with touch.) But I do have to try it; I currently run a Droid 2, so the keyboard&#8217;s set. I&#8217;m curious if someone has a tablet if that works. </p>
<p><strong>Updated:</strong> Hearing some feedback that touch may actually work with this UI, so, hey, I&#8217;m open to anything.</p>
<p>The freedom in free software, however, means you&#8217;re free to try things out regardless, which I think is a good thing. (The experimentation here is not possible on Apple iOS and Microsoft Windows Phone stores, which forbid software with a GPL license. It&#8217;s essentially a legal/political obstacle, not a technical one.)</p>

<p>Speaking of futuristic instrumental design, the Eigenharp &#8211; an instrument that looks like the bassoon was redesigned by Vulcans &#8211; brings two big developments with its appearance this week in the Bay Area of California. First off, if you&#8217;ve doubted its utility in musical practice and you&#8217;re a fan of American minimalism, we&#8217;re treated to it covering the music of Philip Glass&#8217; landmark <em>Koyaanisqatsi</em>. Geert Bevin, Eigenlabs&#8217; Senior Software Developer, explains how he did it:</p>
<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m using SonicCouture&#8217;s Glass/Works Kontakt instrument in a four-part multi-timbral setup in Native Instruments Kontakt. Each key individually controls pitch, velocity and the resonance of the convolution filter cut-off frequency (which creates a faint scraping-like sound).</p>
<p>The vocals are done through the DPA microphone that&#8217;s clipped onto the breath pipe and plugged into the Eigenharp Alpha. It uses the built-in Eigenharp Alpha pre-amp and is routed through a series of Audio Unit effects in EigenD for pitch shifting, stereo spreading, EQ and<br />
compression. I&#8217;m monitoring directly from the headphone output of the Eigenharp Alpha with my Etymotic ER-4P earphones.</p>
<p>The single instrument cables carries all the information, data and audio, in both directions.</p></blockquote>
<p>Geert has good news for those who hope to modify the software, or see it become a platform on which other instrumental innovation can happen. As originally promised, key components of the software are now covered by the GPLv3. It&#8217;s not the whole software stack, but I think it&#8217;s the stuff that most matters. Full details:</p>

<p>I can imagine this will open up some new possibilities for the Eigenharp&#8217;s dedicated band of players to mod the instrument for their own needs. But players, I&#8217;d love to hear from you &#8211; does the GPL here matter to you? Will you be able to dig into the code, or know someone who could? (Or want to try to motivate developers to do so?)</p>

<p>There are plenty of reasons to consider free software tools as part of your toolchain for music making. They might fit your budget, give you needed flexibility, allow you to use a tool driven more by development needs than commercial ones, give you tools that would otherwise lack proprietary commercial niches, allow you to run (via Linux) on a wider variety of hardware or with greater low-latency performance, or allow you to contribute more directly to a project, from documentation to actual development. And increasingly, they don&#8217;t mandate some sort of philosophical choice, either &#8211; I routinely use free software tools on the proprietary Mac OS, and use commercial, proprietary projects (Renoise) on Linux or (Harrison Mixbus) to make free projects more powerful.</p>
<p>What usually holds people back from free software projects is, simply, not knowing where to begin. Software in general can overwhelm with choice; free software, often, doubly so. </p>
<p>Fortunately, some software gurus have jumped into the legwork so you don&#8217;t have to. I have some of my own thoughts on how to put this together, but first I wanted to share the input of these esteemed colleagues. These aren&#8217;t all Linux-only &#8211; many run on Windows and Mac, too &#8211; but if you <em>are</em> looking for a way to put together a robust studio on Linux, they&#8217;re a great start.</p>
<h3>Webcast, Software Picks, Knowledge Databases</h3>

<p><strong>Warning:</strong> I just discovered that this thing pops up an annoying survey that assumes you use JBoss. (And, heck, CDM is indirectly a Red Hat customer &#8211; the whole site runs on RHEL.) Trying to tell it you don&#8217;t use JBoss makes the whole survey fail. I&#8217;m going to try to schedule something separately, as this is &#8230; more than a little ridiculous for a music-making survey, and sadly shows Red Hat&#8217;s blind spot in regards to end users. </p>
<p>Day job in tech, night job in music making &#8211; yup, that&#8217;s the M.O. of quite a few people around this community.</p>

I tend to be more pragmatic about some of these issues, so I&#8217;m not endorsing all the opinions on Adam&#8217;s blog, but it&#8217;s a compelling read, and often comes with useful practical advice. (Mainly &#8211; I disagree with two points, one, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s entirely fair to say that proprietary DAWs lack interoperability, and two, I&#8217;m far more pragmatic about the future of Android as a platform, mainly because I think it&#8217;s currently the best bet for the distribution of free software on mobile. Oh, I don&#8217;t trust Google, either, though &#8211; that&#8217;d be silly.)</p>
<h3>Picks from Dave Phillips of Linux Journal</h3>
<p>Last weekend, I had the pleasure to meet Dave Phillips for the first time. Dave, an Ohio-based musician and teacher, is bar none the most invaluable writer when it comes to free software and music-making on Linux. His series for Linux Journal in particular is a must-read.</p>
<p>Dave and I joined Columbia&#8217;s Brad Garton at Virginia Tech to do a bit of teaching, a bit of playing, and to enjoy the hard work of the <a href="http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/main/">Linux Laptop Orchestra</a>. I&#8217;ll cover more of that soon, but in the meantime, I took some notes as Dave walked through a current take on the software for Linux that most excited him.</p>

<li>Ardour, naturally</li>
<li><a href="http://ardour.org/development">Ardour 3</a>, the next-generation update to Ardour that at last adds MIDI support (and beautifully executed). Dave noted that you can and should install Ardour 3 alongside the stable Ardour, so you can test both. There are even pre-built alpha binaries, so there&#8217;s really no excuse: you could be up and running in less than the time it took to read this. (See a much earlier story from Dave on <a href="http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/testing-30-sneak-peek-64-studio-30-and-ardour3">testing 3</a>.)</li>
<li><a href="mixbus.harrisonconsoles.com ">Harrison Mixbus</a>: It&#8217;s not free software, but it is now Linux-native and supports Linux plug-ins, and it&#8217;s built on Ardour (and, in turn, contributes back to Ardour). As Dave put it, Mixbus is a mind-boggling value &#8220;from a company that thinks of a budget console as costing $100,000.&#8221;</li>
<li><a href="http://factorial.hu/plugins/lv2/ir">IR: LV2 convolution reverb</a>. The work of Tom Szilagyi, IR is a brilliant, no-nonsense plug-in for powerful convolution effects; LV2 support means it runs beautifully in hosts like Ardour 2.8.x and higher and Renoise. I&#8217;m really grateful to Dave for turning me on to this one. <a href="http://wootangent.net/2011/01/ir-the-convolution-plugin-ive-been-waiting-for/">woo, tangent</a> has a nice blog entry on the plug.</li>
<li><a href="http://lv2plug.in/trac/">LV2</a>, generally. Dave credits the evolving state of LV2, and the work of its principle developer, David Robillard, for a lot of innovation in free software and Linux audio. I&#8217;m surprised LV2 hasn&#8217;t gained more attention, in fact &#8211; it might be the best bet yet to finally help plug-in developers escape the shadow of  formats like VST. But that&#8217;s probably a topic for another article.</li>
<li><a href="http://rubberbandaudio.com/">RubberBand Audio Processor</a> Powerful time stretching tool, now on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS. Available as a library, too, if you&#8217;re a developer &#8211; or just use it to mangle your audio files as an end user. Someone has already <a href="http://tools.renoise.com/tools/rubberband-timestretchpitch-shift">ported it to Renoise</a>.</li>
</ul>

<p>The focus of Dave&#8217;s presentation, though, was one tool so deep, it could easily be your <em>only</em> tool, for the rest of time. AVSynthesis couples visual output in OpenGL with the veritable Csound sound and composition engine. It includes built-in sequencing capabilities, basic sound generators (themselves written in Csound), envelopes and modulation, the powerful MatrixSynthMod instrument, MIDI control, and effects (phasers, choruses, filter, waveguide filter, and so on). There&#8217;s shader support on the graphics side, too. The result: based on built-in building blocks or, if you&#8217;re adventurous, your own code, you can produce 3D audiovisual musical-eye candy performances. I hope we&#8217;ll take more look at this soon; the one question that came up repeatedly &#8211; and that Dave couldn&#8217;t answer yet &#8211; was what the workflow might be for adding your own Csound creations. (The package itself is built in Java.)</p>

<p>Lest you think we&#8217;re all a bunch of &#8220;neckbeard&#8221; Marxist free software revolutionaries, though, Dave &#8211; who&#8217;s had drinks with Stallman on occasion &#8211; was also full of questions about Mac OS and curious about it for his own music making. I think largely we&#8217;re all technologically curious; if anything, the only people I&#8217;ve met who have gotten really emotional are the people who mistrust free software, perhaps because they just need to loosen up and accept that something really can be free.</p>
<p>But as with proprietary software, I think the biggest danger with Linux and free software is that you can become overwhelmed with choices rather than focusing on music. That&#8217;s part of why I find these choices so appealing: deep, capable, well-designed, and rock-solid, I&#8217;ve found them to be eminently musical. Some of the best demonstrate that free software can provide choice &#8211; not, as many believe, only compromise. And I see absolutely no reason that they can&#8217;t coexist with other popular proprietary options in your studio. You may not be ready to leap into Linux, but especially given that by now you&#8217;ve likely accumulated either extra machines or machines that can easily dual-boot, there&#8217;s no reason not to add these free tools to your arsenal.</p>
