<p>Commercial developers are now releasing music creation apps for mobile game systems, in the form of the KORG DS-10 for Nintendo DS and Rockstar&#8217;s Beaterator for PSP. But some of the best ideas still come from the homebrew community. </p>
<p>What&#8217;s most impressive about ToneSynthDS is not so much what it does as its interface, fitting all its functionality into the DS&#8217; two compact screens. Its minimal interface finds an elegant arrangement of everything you most urgently need, with a sequencer screen on one DS screen and basic virtual analog synth parameters on the other. A 4 x 4 matrix next to the main sequencer grid lets you switch between patterns, in a step sequencer reminiscent of the monome and Tenori-On. There isn&#8217;t a whole lot of depth to event editing in this early version, but it could be a lovely way to sketch melodic patterns. (And some of those limitations come from the DS itself. Note, though, that this app gets a full 16 real-time channels on the original DS hardware to the Korg DS-10&#8217;s paltry two.)</p>
<p>Developer Fanta/Hotelsinus Sound Design has been posting mock-ups, demos, and now builds as he goes. That means that he gets feedback from an audience of readers and incorporates those as he develops the app &#8211; another key difference between the DIY/homebrew scene and conventional commercial development.</p>
<p>More good news: this DS app should also run as a PC VST in a forthcoming version, opening up the fun to folks using netbooks and laptops instead of the DS and creating a nice mobile-to-computer workflow.</p>

<p><strong>In related Nintendo DS news:</strong> If you&#8217;re thinking about getting the new DS-10 Plus Limited Edition of the KORG DS-10, you&#8217;ll need to get it for the region coding of your DS. (In other words, you probably won&#8217;t want to import it.) The &#8220;Dual Mode&#8221; functions are region-locked, so North American and European users can&#8217;t use the Japanese DS-10. That&#8217;s not such a big deal, as North American distribution was announced, and other regions are expected to follow, but it&#8217;s good to know. <a href="http://allthingskorgds10.blogspot.com/2009/10/nintendo-dsi-game-region-alert.html">See details on the All Things KORG DS-10 blog</a>. <p>Clearly, there&#8217;s a lot of work still to be done, so test this build at your own risk. But it&#8217;s already good fun, and the coming roadmap looks logical, with filter options, disk rendering, song mode, and more in store. It&#8217;s also an interesting read as far as wrangling with emulators and some of the challenges of DS development.</p>

<p>Imagine an alternative universe in which simple digital handheld games evolved into sophisticated music tools. Oh, and they also made lots of really purty lights flash. Mmmmm &#8230; flashing lights.</p>
<p>Well, that alternative universe seems to be right here. <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/02/25/diy-sequencers-and-you-the-foundation-of-techno-reimagined-in-new-hardware/">Mike Una</a> gave us a massive dump of unusual new DIY sequencers, crafted from the ground up to rework techno into sonic objects. Some are unquestionably indebted to the analog step sequencer, but others take as much from 80s digital toys.</p>
<p>Working with the Meggy, Jr. DIY handheld game platform &#8211; with a stunning 8&#215;8 pixel resolution &#8211; Darius Kazemi has begun building a music app. He calls it &#8220;MeggySynth,&#8221; and says he&#8217;s conceptualizing it as much a video performance as it is sonic performance. Let the video get at least part of the way in, as the colors really pick up &#8211; full RGB LEDs really are a beautiful thing (and something you don&#8217;t get from projects like monome).</p>

Part of what strikes me about Toshio Iwai&#8217;s work &#8211; not only Tenori-On for Yamaha and ElektroPlankton for Nintendo, but his installation work stretching back to the 90s &#8211; is that it often incorporates game aesthetics. Designs are reduced to their elemental interaction and visual representation, which very often includes low-resolution, pixellated grids. <p>Now, being the greedy person I am, I really want this style of RGB grid, but with other sound sources. But I think there&#8217;s a lot of potential, and just as grids of lights can function on roadsigns, there&#8217;s no reason even a small number of pixels can&#8217;t be expressive. Just ask your local Tamigotchi.</p>

<p>I ask you:  what is the foundation for rhythmic electronic music?  I suggest that the humble step-sequencer is the backbone of many of today&#8217;s musical genres and memetic evolutions.  To have electronic rhythm, you need to start with a clock and go from there, dividing it into fractions and multiples.  Then start assigning sounds to those divisions and you&#8217;re pretty much there- techno is happening.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been working on prototyping a sequencer-synth and in doing research, I&#8217;ve come across numerous projects that tackle this idea with great enthusiasm.  Because a sequencer can drive any type of electronics, projects tend to fall into two categories: audio, or visual.  Additionally, I&#8217;m seeing two main drivers for the sequence itself:  the nimble arduino, and the CMOS 4017 Decade counter IC.  I&#8217;ll survey here some of the finished projects to give an idea of what&#8217;s possible.  Come with me, won&#8217;t you, on an exploration of the world of DIY sequencers.<br />

<p>This &#8220;basic arduino sequencer&#8221; by Nikolaosh is undeniably fun.  Looks like four potentiometers controlling software synth parameters, with the Arduino doing the sequencing as well. <p>This &#8220;Beatsequencer&#8221; by <a href="http://www.helpmode.de/kamilgarbacz/wordpress/">Kamil Garbacz</a> also uses Arduino to drive a matrix of LEDs.  Looks like the top row indicates the position of the step, while the bottom 3 rows indicate on/off status for the beep assigned to that row.  A matrix of switches turns each step on and off, 808-style.  It&#8217;s a very compact design with a minimal interface, but it seems to work.</p>

<p>This &#8220;Cigarduino Punk Console&#8221; from frogstar has a lot of great elements- nice pulsewave synthesis from the Arduino and a fun cigar-box case.  It&#8217;s a little light on the LEDs though- don&#8217;t we all like our sequencers to have big banks of LEDs pusling through their paces?</p>

<p>In the 4017 category, we&#8217;ve got this nice little box from <a href="http://note.monoanimal.com/">Note!</a>.  It nicely marries the Atari Punk console to the 4017 running as a 4-step sequencer.  Good glitchy tones get put through their paces.</p>

<p>This sequencer from 9volts really opens up the possibilities here- he&#8217;s using the 4017 synched to a drum sampler, triggering circuit-bent devices and controlling gating and filtering.  That&#8217;s what I&#8217;m talkin&#8217; about right there.</p>

<p>This experiment from <a href="http://jorgecrowe.com.ar/">h.cosas</a> uses the 4017 to drive an LCD display with interesting results.  Dig those color bars!</p>

<p>This LED pattern sequencer by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/WootsPC">WootsPC</a> is very nice to look at- this should give you an idea of what can be done with a basic sequencer, some LEDs, and an eye for animation.</p>
<p>What I take away from all of these projects is the idea that a sequencer can drive pretty much anything, and the most fun and interesting projects lie not in the sequencer itself, but in what is driven by the sequencer.  </p>
<p>I&#8217;d really like to see someone who combines these LED animations with a good sounding, nicely-interfaced sequenced synth that&#8217;s syncable to MIDI clock input, but I think I might have to build that one myself- I&#8217;m working on my own like-minded project, and I&#8217;ve realized I&#8217;ve got a ways to go before I&#8217;ll be satisfied with the results.  In case you&#8217;re curious, here&#8217;s my little project as of two weeks ago.  I&#8217;ve made some modifications since then, but you get the basic idea.</p>

<p>The Cupertino-Mushroom Kingdom gap has been closed: you can now mix and match DS and iPhone/iPod touch for wireless control of music and visuals. DSMI, the homebrew library that has enabled wireless and serial MIDI connections from the Nintendo DS, has come to iPod touch and iPhone. That means anyone building instruments and controllers on the iThing can now add wireless MIDI controllers that talk to computers &#8211; or other mobile devices, including the DS. It also means that DSMI&#8217;s acronym standing for &#8220;Nintendo DS Music Interface&#8221; has only one word that describes all the things it does.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a developer, you can grab the open source (LGPL-licensed) code. If you&#8217;re a user, apps are already supporting the new wireless features. There&#8217;s MIDI Motion Machine, which provides tilt and 16 triggers, and iXY, a 99-cent app for KAOSS Pad-style X/Y touch control. The MIDI Motion Machine author, TheRain, takes an interesting approach: there&#8217;s both a free and pay version, and the free version has source code.</p>

Who says there isn&#8217;t still some room to refine interfaces?</div>
<p>Tobias Weyand, DSMI&#8217;s original co-creator along with TheRain, writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>My friend TheRain has ported DSMI to the iPhone! This enables iPhone deveopers to easily integrate wireless MIDI in their applications, making it possible to control any MIDI application on the PC with the iPhone. The Wifi-to-MIDI bridge is the same DSMI server application that is also used for the DS, thus it works with Windows, OSX and Linux.<br />
Also, like on the DS, both OSC and MIDI are supported!</p>
<p>DSMI for iPhone is available from our Google Code site (http://code.google.com/p/dsmi/) together with an open source example application called MIDI Motion Machine that is a tilt-based xy-controller.</p>
<p>The cool thing is that this library takes away all the hassle of communicating MIDI messages to the PC and makes development of MIDI controllers very very simple. So, we hope that people will use the DSMI to create a lot of innovative iPhone MIDI controller apps.</p>

<p>By the way, if you&#8217;re a loyal Nintendo DS developer and think this whole iNonense thing is useless, the main library for DS also got a lot of improvements, cleaner coding, and collaboration on Google Code.  </p>
<p>What about using OpenSoundControl instead of MIDI? On the iPhone/iPod, it&#8217;s a non-issue: OSC is a networking protocol, so it&#8217;s already wireless-ready. On the DS, DSMI&#8217;s source includes an OSC example, and unlike the MIDI in DSMI, you don&#8217;t need a piece of software receiving on the computer end.</p>
<p>Now, any suggestions for how to broaden the acronym DSMI so it&#8217;s more accurate? Digital Signal Multimodal Interface? Digital Sound and Music Interface? Damned Sweet Machine Instrument?</p>

<p>Of course, part of what I like about analog &#8212; and digital &#8212; sound sources is their range. Want to make something that sounds noisy and chaotic? Want to make something that sounds more organic? Delicate? We really do have infinite timbral choices. </p>
<p>So I&#8217;d say, even if you hate these kinds of results, they&#8217;re a reminder that no sound is off-limits. You can make whatever noise you like.</p>

<p>Much of the sound of electronic music today grows out of the use &#8211; and abuse &#8211; of specific designs. The electronica beats bred in discos and techno, Detroit and Berlin have a direct lineage to analog step sequencers and the rigid precision of Roland&#8217;s early electronic devices. These designs create limitations to embrace and to oppose &#8211; just as music notation or theoretical convention did for composers for centuries.</p>
<p>Okay, that&#8217;s a lofty way to put it &#8212; the question here is, how do you re-engineer music, even an ounce at a time? If you&#8217;re a composer a few centuries ago, you make subtle changes to your craft, working inside a convention, and write that down. (Just as with electronic music, there is a layer of separation &#8211; only then, it was a piece of paper.) If you&#8217;re an electronic artist today, you can likewise change what you&#8217;re able to control, and how, playing live. The differences at first may be imperceptible, but just like learning an instrument, the long-term payoff can be huge.</p>
<p>I asked for examples of what people are doing with the Lemur multi-touch touchscreen controller and its recently updated V2 software. This isn&#8217;t just about the Lemur &#8211; it illustrates what&#8217;s possible when the musical device and the controller can flow freely out of a musician&#8217;s imagination. That could apply to hardware or software designs well beyond the Lemur.</p>
<p>Mikael BjÃ¶rk of Sweden responded with a terrific example, a &#8220;dynamic&#8221; sequencer available to all Lemur users via JazzMutant. The open-ended screen layout of the Lemur has allowed the creator to provide all kinds of unusual control over morphing beats, with your fingertips manipulating simulated physics as beats twist around you. It&#8217;s not just electronica and sampling and DJing, either &#8211; he also has an incredible clip working with a very talented vocalist. It sounds markedly different from the more conventional, Loopstation-style loop performance.</p>

<p>The upcoming release of Max for Live should mean that Live can work more seamlessly with the Lemur and the control configuration &#8212; more on that soon. But this doesn&#8217;t have to even be about Live; I imagine we&#8217;ll see other setups moving this direction, too.</p>
<p>And having an open music controller means that, pricey as the Lemur is, you get added value from this kind of artist contribution. (See also: monome, on <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/monome">CDM</a> or the <a href="http://monome.org">monome project site</a>.) You can use this sequencer layout as is &#8212; use it in a different way musically &#8212; or modify it, or create your own. <p>Not much to add &#8211; when the tech is working right, your traditional musicianship (if you&#8217;re lucky enough to have it) can come out. And while the occasional touchscreen tap may not seem as dynamic by comparison, I think the way to think of the Lemur is as a compositional device &#8211; the vocalist is the real &#8220;player,&#8221; in a conventional sense, whereas the Lemur is acting as a composer &#8212; remixer, however you want to think of it &#8212; in real-time.</p>
<p>My respect for the Lemur has really grown as it has matured; the folks at JazzMutant have addressed some of my design complaints. Its cost is, like most boutique instruments that aren&#8217;t made in huge quantities, a premium &#8211; no argument there. Likewise, you can sacrifice some of that unique design and get a cheap commodity device. In the end, I think there&#8217;s a value in both. To me, the more important thing is what people are doing musically. So I&#8217;ll be sure to follow both &#8211; and hopefully share some how-to people for our Lemur owners and DIY touchscreen users (or other controllers) alike. Even if you just have a box with a few knobs on it, it is possible to move in some new directions. </p>

<p>We got to enjoy another edition of Handmade Music in Brooklyn last week, getting together with our friends from <a href="http://xlr8r.com">XLR8R</a>, <a href="http://makezine.com/blog">Make Magazine</a>, DIY marketplace <a href="http://etsy.com">Etsy.com</a>, and venue host <a href="http://3rdwardbrooklyn.org">3rd Ward</a>. A huge thanks to our sponsor Pabst Blue Ribbon. </p>
<p>There are two things I especially love about these events. One is, we get to hang out and just make a racket. Performances are a wonderful thing, but getting to mix it up a little with total sonic chaos is great fun. Two, we connect people who haven&#8217;t met &#8211; non-musicians, people with no background in this stuff discovering what&#8217;s going on, but also people doing related work who may not have met before, even in a city like New York. On this particular occasion, we had two artists working with gestural controllers who were able to exchange ideas.</p>
<p>I think all of this can be replicated, of course, even if just hanging out with friends (in music or other fields). So, since Make Magazine and Popular Science were both nice enough to shoot some footage, here&#8217;s a look at what was on offer at this month&#8217;s edition of the event. <p>Move over, Nintendo DS. You may win on quantity and you certainly have some interesting apps, but when it comes to hardcore, deep apps with rich sounds and capabilities, the PSP has turned into a mobile music creation powerhouse. And if you think mobile music production is a novelty or a toy or only for chipmusic fans, take a good long look at PSPSEQ and Little Piggy. These are serious, grown-up trackers that can put your current computer workstation to shame. (And yes, when it comes to accurate timing, I&#8217;m afraid that includes the app-of-the-week Ableton Live.)</p>
<p>Two big developments: a Little Piggy port (video above) and growing PSPSEQ documentation (video playlist below).</p>
<p><strong>This Little Piggy Went to PSP</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Little Piggy&#8221;, aka LGPT, aka Little GP Tracker (which awesomely also stands for <a href="http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/LGPT">Laser Gated and Pumped Thyristor</a>) is making its way to the PSP. Originally built for the Linux GamePark platform, creator nostromo got this LSDJ-inspired tracker working in basic form on PSP in just a <a href="http://www.gorehole.org/nostromo/2009/01/20/a-week-end-and-an-evening/">weekend and an evening</a>.</p>

<p>LGPT is inspired by LSDJ on the Game Boy, but brings some twists of its own &#8211; and is nice and easy to see on a bright PSP screen. Now, LSDJ still has its place, thanks to the unique sound of the chip on the vintage Game Boy and the absurd cheapness of those machines, but it&#8217;s still good news.</p>
<p><strong>PSPSEQ Documentation</strong></p>
<p>PSPSEQ is already mature, but it tends to baffle newcomers. And creator Ethan Bordeaux has enough DSP technique in his head that you really want to know every little detail of the software he created. He&#8217;s working on copious tutorials. They already cover basic workflow, though the real gems should be once he gets into synth editing &#8211; PSPSEQ&#8217;s synthesis capabilities can rival a lot of desktop soft synths, and you can get into tweaking sounds instantly &#8211; no messy, gimicky UI getting in your way. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got a playlist below. I&#8217;m also working on a more compact guide to getting you up and running quickly &#8211; once I digest all the work Ethan has already done.</p>
<p><strong>Updated: Watch on your PSP.</strong> Ethan sends along a video with direct-downloadable tutorial videos that should play nicely on a PSP. (Ethan recommends the homebrew video player PSPlayer, or you can try a conversion utility like the free PSP Player. Of course, you can&#8217;t watch and use at the same time, so you may wind up loading these elsewhere.)</p>

<p>Both apps are free, though you will need a hacked PSP as with any PSP homebrew. I&#8217;ll keep dreaming of officially-sanctioned online distribution, in the meantime.</p>

<h3>Dueling Gestural Interfaces</h3>

<p>We have not one but two fascinating takes on gestural objects as music controllers. Brian Kerr is bringing his research into new dynamic interfaces for music, drawing upon an academic background in industrial design, as M Bethancourt brings the Gesture-Controller Exploration 2 (GCE-2).</p>
<p><strong>Mouse &amp; the Billionaire (M Bethancourt): GCE-2</strong></p>
<p>M Bethancourt has created a really gorgeous object, so I&rsquo;m eager to see it in action. Check out the site for research, presentations, ideas for use, and more. And clearly we have to get Mouse &amp; the Billionaire and Brian Kerr together &ndash; they&rsquo;re working on similar lines, so they&rsquo;ll either learn from each other or break out into a big gestural music battle. (or, ideally, both!)</p>
<blockquote><p>The Gesture-Controller Exploration is an ongoing study in innovative musical controllers that explores the relationship between movement, physical space and musical performance. The most recent incarnation is the GCE-2 (Gesture-Controller Exploration 2). Dipping, swinging, swaying, tilting, and turning the The GCE-2 sends signals to the computer, informing its sound-making functions. This allows for a more satisfying performance experience, leveraging the power of the computer and helping the electronic musician to use physical means to create and manipulate digital electronic sounds in new and interesting ways.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m currently completing my industrial design masters thesis at Pratt Institute. My working thesis title is, Dynamic Musical Interfaces. I&#8217;ve started to document my first prototype, which is a wireless gestural controller for Max/MSP. One of my main goals with this project is to create an physically expressive performance device for computer music that is engaging for both the performer as well as the audience.</p>

<p>I love that Brian&rsquo;s design was able to make use of a 3D printer, because I believe someday these will be as commonplace as the Canon multifunction sitting on my desk. Brian writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>I worked in the parametric 3D CAD program, <a href="http://www.solidworks.com/">SolidWorks </a>to design the exterior casing of my controller. After it was built in with this software environment, I converted the file into an STL format and printed it out with a <a href="http://www.dimensionprinting.com/">3D printer</a>. The bottom of the controller has a potentiometer joining the half sphere with the upper section. To stabilize this connection, I built a pair of channels into each of the parts and inserted little plastic ball bearings for support (I&#8217;ll add photos of this later).</p>

<p>Richie Brown says he&rsquo;ll have to see how much he can carry with him on the train from New Jersey, but he&rsquo;s got a stockpile of wonderful technology oddities he&rsquo;s created. He writes:</p>

LGPT has the interface of littlesounddj, as known on the Game Boy, and can even drive MIDI (meaning this could be a great time to figure out MIDI output on the PSP). He&rsquo;s asking for donations, and he&rsquo;s already well on his way, meaning you have a chance to put him over the top &ndash; reach into your (ahem) Piggy Bank:</p>
