			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/24303171?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=9dca68" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>
<p>Matt Davis [namethemachine] is seen here with Microsoft&#8217;s Kinect computer vision / 3D camera controller, plus &#8211; stealing the show &#8211; lasers. The lasers in question are a rig by Henry Strange, which allows computer control of laser direction using the DMX protocol. (DMX is a protocol similar to MIDI &#8211; though actually a bit simpler, if you can believe that &#8211; generally associated with lighting and show control.) </p>
<p>I could say more, but I&#8217;ll let you watch the video and ponder. The ingredients:<br />
<a href="http://www.openni.org/">OpenNI</a>, the &#8220;natural interface&#8221; not-for-profit standards body and organization that allows drivers across multiple hardware (Kinect being the best-known)<br />
Ableton Live (sound)<br />
Max/MSP (I believe here just translating OpenNI control to MIDI and perhaps DMX, as well)</p>
<p>The result: audiovisual control, and The Future. (Now, the only problem is, I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d want to watch an entire lineup of people doing these kinds of gestures while performing, but I could certainly see this alongside other alternative control schemes, from breath to good-old-fashioned tangible controllers.)</p>
<p>Thanks, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/LauraEscude">Laura Escude</a>, for the tip. (Laura has her own interface for futuristic electronic performance &#8211; she uses a violin!)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You&#8217;re not cool now? You will be, as your hands dance to the rhythm through the magical <em>lasers</em>. </p>
<p>A few moments of your playing, and nothing could possibly convince me that you didn&#8217;t grow up on the streets of Jamaica, banging oil drums you salvaged and hammered into shape.</p>
<p>
<div style="padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px; display: inline" id="scid:5737277B-5D6D-4f48-ABFC-DD9C333F4C5D:b4c2f191-856b-4b6f-b367-df0ccc736aae" class="wlWriterSmartContent">
<div id="896071f7-a0af-4878-81c7-1267da634a46" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;">
<div><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpDZ3WotLXY&amp;hl=en" target="_new"><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/2008/04/videoc7da1c9ed543.jpg" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('896071f7-a0af-4878-81c7-1267da634a46'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = &quot;&lt;div&gt;&lt;object width=\&quot;425\&quot; height=\&quot;350\&quot;&gt;&lt;param name=\&quot;movie\&quot; value=\&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/TpDZ3WotLXY&amp;hl=en\&quot;&gt;&lt;\/param&gt;&lt;param name=\&quot;wmode\&quot; value=\&quot;transparent\&quot;&gt;&lt;\/param&gt;&lt;embed src=\&quot;http://www.youtube.com/v/TpDZ3WotLXY&amp;hl=en\&quot; type=\&quot;application/x-shockwave-flash\&quot; wmode=\&quot;transparent\&quot; width=\&quot;425\&quot; height=\&quot;350\&quot;&gt;&lt;\/embed&gt;&lt;\/object&gt;&lt;\/div&gt;&quot;;" alt=""></a></div>
</div>
</div>
<p>Whoops, sorry &#8212; had to snap out of that for a second.</p>
<p>So, okay &#8212; it seems the <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/04/02/sharper-image-selling-pre-made-laser-harp-but-why-not-make-your-own/" target="_blank">beamz laser harp</a> we saw last week comes with special algorithmic software that makes music play basically regardless of what you do. The problem with laser harps in general is they tend to the button-pressing variety: that is, you&#8217;re waving your arms around like crazy, but really the laser sensor is either off or on. (There are ways around that, but &#8230; well, not here.) </p>
<p>Watch closely as someone leaves their hand in front of the harp and does nothing. And this, of course, is what real instruments have going for them &#8212; that you have to work hard to play them, and that&#8217;s actually kind of the fun of it. It&#8217;s like basketball: if you just held down a button the entire game and a robot played for you, it would be <em>easier</em>, but that wouldn&#8217;t necessarily be better. Even as a computer game, we expect multiple buttons, and actual difficulty. If you waved your hands around and wore sunglasses and had a $600 gadget from Sharper Image and pretended to play basketball, that wouldn&#8217;t be much of an improvement, either. I&#8217;m not sure why music is excepted from this rule, but then, many things about this world provide amazement and confusion.</p>
<p>Yes, technically Guitar Hero / Rock Band does the same thing. Except that it has actual difficulty. And has real songs. And is fun. Whereas this is painful. And it&#8217;s about as expensive than Rock Band <em>plus</em> a PS3.</p>
<p>That leaves two questions.</p>
<p><span id="more-3291"></span></p>
<p>First, there&#8217;s the academic question of how generative musical algorithms could be controlled via more expressive input devices &#8212; so that generative music felt creative, and not just holding down a button and letting the computer figure out what to play. I&#8217;m not sure you&#8217;ll find the answer in the Euro-Pop-imagical beamz, but I&#8217;m just saying.</p>
<p>Second, how come this girl is getting totally dumped on?</p>
<p><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/2008/04/everyonesoundsgreat.jpg"><img border="0" alt="everyonesoundsgreat" src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/2008/04/everyonesoundsgreat-thumb.jpg" width="479" height="359"></a> </p>
<p>Oh, sure. I see how this works. The &#8220;everyone sounds great!&#8221; caption just <em>happens</em> to go with this poor young woman.</p>
<p>The entire video is nothing but dorky white dudes (yeah, I know &#8212; takes one to know one). We&#8217;re supposed to believe that by wearing aviator glasses and cheap headphones and pretending to be totally into their own playing, these guys are really rock stars enjoying the new frontiers opened by Sharper Image laser gimmickry.</p>
<p>But the young girl in the penguin-emblazoned vest? It&#8217;s sheer technological wonder that <em>she</em> can produce the same crap as the rest of them.</p>
<p>I think the video captions have it backwards. I mean, she has a robot dog and stuff. She&#8217;s going to tire of the beamz and go back to programming the Game Boy tracker she coded herself.</p>
<p>Give Penguin Girl a break.</p>
<p><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/2008/04/shades.jpg"><img border="0" alt="shades" src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/2008/04/shades-thumb.jpg" width="478" height="359"></a></p>

US$599? Yes, this is obviously Sharper Image exercising the business and marketing acumen that allowed it to &#8212; erm &#8212; <a href="http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6231303.html">file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy</a> protection earlier this year.</p>
<p>And, in a move we haven&#8217;t seen in years, they spell the name with a &#8216;z&#8217; instead of an &#8216;s.&#8217; Classy. And they&#8217;ve opted for a design that looks like the security fence in <em>Jurassic Park</em>.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thereminworld.com/news.asp?s=701">The beamz Music Performance System</a> @ Theremin World</p>
<p>Not sold yet? Read this feature and drool:</p>
<blockquote><p>Choose a complementary rhythm track from 30 original songs in 19 music genres, including jazz, bluegrass, classical, hip-hop, reggae, heavy metal and more.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>And it all &#8220;brings families and friends together through highly personalized music performances that elicit joy and excitement across all ages.&#8221; So, is $600 really so much to ask if it <em>saves your family</em>?</p>

<p>As it happens, you can make a much cooler (okay, not saying much &#8212; a <em>cool</em>) laser harp on your own, as <a href="http://www.stephenhobley.com/build">Stephen Hobley</a> has done:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.ladyada.net/rant/2008/02/stephen-hobleys-awesome-laser-harp/">Stephen Hobley&rsquo;s *awesome* laser harp</a> [ladyada's ranting]</p>
<p><P>Click through to comments for more details on the project and how-to info.</p>
<p><strong>Updated:</strong> Stephen&#8217;s site is back up, so go have a look. The project uses the very inexpensive <a href="http://ladyada.net/make/boarduino/">Boarduino</a> Arduino clone. I&#8217;m an Arduino vet but just picked up a Boarduino, so I&#8217;ll let you know when I do something with it.</p>
<p>&#8220;Totally awesome&#8221; as this may be, I still feel somehow unsatisfied. And then I know why:</p>
<p>Someone needs to do a laser <em>tag </em>harp. Ah, that takes me back. Anyone?</p>

<p>Photo: <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/carinemily/">carinemily</a>. And they say this whole 8-bit music thing is about 80s nostalgia? I&#8217;ll show you 80s nostalgia.</p>

<blockquote><p>Masaoka was then able to play the instrument in its natural, acoustic state, use the gestural data supplied by motion sensors to generate and process sounds electronically, or do both at the same time. Toward the end of the Monster Koto&#8217;s life cycle, Masaoka installed laser arrays above and below the instrument&#8217;s body.</p>
<p>The Laser Koto was born when she decided to get rid of everything but the lasers.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/stories/2006/august2006/infernoselection.jpg"></p>
<p>Custom electric violin builder E.F. Keebler goes a little over the top with instruments like his <a href="http://www.efkeebler.com/efkmi/photos-display-inferno.htm">Inferno</a>. Pimp my violin, indeed: this is the first acoustic instrument I&#8217;ve ever seen that I can confidently say is NOT street legal. Take a look at these specs:</p>
<p><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/stories/2006/august2006/inferno1.jpg"></p>
<ol>
<LI>79 LEDs in the fingerboard in a flame pattern, reponsive to motion and playing</li>
<p><LI>92 LEDs on the side for a flickering-flame effect, also responsive to music</li>
<p><LI>12 additional flame lights</li>
<p><LI>Custom flame shell with custom engraving and airbrushing</li>
<p><LI>Pewter sculpted devil&#8217;s head, designed by the late fantasy artist James Lane Casey</li>
<p><LI>Laser-powered eyes and a spark-shooting mouth</li>
</ol>
<p><a href="http://www.efkeebler.com/efkmi/index.htm">E.F. Keebler Violins</a></p>
<p>You&#8217;ll pay a few grand for all the options, but it&#8217;s not just for show: Keebler&#8217;s designs are customized for playability, too. But, for you DIY types, you just have to appreciate the guts inside:</p>
<p><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/stories/2006/august2006/infernoinnards.jpg"></p>
<p>That&#8217;s just the beginning: electric violins are a must-have for music students, rockers, and (for some reason) crossover classical women wearing latex catsuits:<span id="more-1559"></span></p>
<h3>Viva, Violin Electrico!</h3>
<p><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/stories/2006/august2006/mwpromo04_BIG.jpg"></p>
<p>Builder <a href="http://www.woodviolins.com/html/home.html">Mark Wood</a> manufactures custom electric violins for a slightly broader audience, ranging from more traditional models to 7-stringed electric rocker &#8216;lins. Mark has his own electric violin-fronted rock band that tours with the likes of the Trans Siberian Orchestra, though he&#8217;s also been known to play duets with Celine Dion.</p>
<p>Most interestingly, though, Wood is taking an evangelical method about violins in general (electric and otherwise) to students, through his <a href="http://www.electrifyyourstrings.com/index2.html">Electrify Your Strings</a> program. And as it happens, today&#8217;s kids love 80s rocker dude chic. (Why not? The guy looks like he&#8217;s having a great time, and the kids catch on.)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=1561616n">CBS Evening News Video: A Music Teacher&#8217;s Revolution</a></p>
<p>Of course, there&#8217;s also the phenomenon of custom electric violins being fashion accessories for crossover violinists like the members of <a href="http://www.wildmusic.co.uk/image_gallery.html#">Wild</a>, as seen below. But I can&#8217;t argue with an instrument that looks good with your catsuit, if that&#8217;s how you roll. If nothing else, I&#8217;m sure these women will shatter the long-haired rocker with electric violin image.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.wildmusic.co.uk/izzy_biog.html">Izzy</a>, seen here, has gone from being a Fiddler on the Roof to getting a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music. But damnit, Izzy, the lens flare from your violin is blinding me! (Now, all I find disappointing is that these electric violinists haven&#8217;t connected with some spacier sounds to go with their instruments.)</p>
<p><img src="http://createdigitalmusic.com/files/stories/2006/august2006/wild.jpg"></p>
<h3>More Violin Tech</h3>
<p>When it rains, it pours violin stories:</p>
<p><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/08/09/strohs-strange-early-20th-century-horn-violins-digital-violin-resource/">Strohâ€&trade;s Strange, Early 20th Century Horn-Violins; â€Å&ldquo;Digital Violinâ€Â? Resource</a></p>

<p>For some of the most bizarre and unusual music-sound installation art, look no further than <a href="http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/">Burning Man</a>. Burning, indeed: this desert-based event has in the past featured <a href="http://www.createdigitalmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&#038;task=view&#038;id=69&#038;Itemid=44">Eric Singer&#8217;s Max/MSP-controlled pyrophone</a>, a propane-powered flaming sound organ. (And, incidentally, that installation is making a repeat appearance this year.)<P><br />
And what better activity when in the middle of the desert than tweaking knobs and producing strange electronic grooves? That&#8217;s the idea behind <a href="http://improbableorchestra.com/index.shtml">improbable orchestra</a>, an interactive table full o&#8217; knobs for collaborative soundmaking. Build one yourself: check out the copious <a href="http://improbableorchestra.com/design.shtml">design notes</a>. Basic specs: the free <a href="http://www.puredata.info">Pure Data</a> graphical multimedia development environment is running sounds, gutted Pentium PC with custom power supply, custom circuit board connecting the knobs and fiddly bits thorough a <a href="http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=BS2SX-IC">Parallax basic stamp board</a>. (Lots more specs on their site, missing only details of the Pd patch.)<P></p>

<p>&#8220;But,&#8221; says you, &#8220;I hate knobs. Give me lasers, man.&#8221; Sure! You obviously want the <a href="http://www.blueink.com/BmanLaserHarp/index.htm">interactive Aeolian laser harp</a>, which suspends a series of laser beams through which you can walk to trigger sound. It&#8217;s the creation of former NYU ITP faculty member <a href="http://www.blueink.com/">Jen Lewin</a>, now based in Colorado and doing interactive sculpture full-time. She has other fantastic projects like <a href="http://www.blueink.com/butterfly/Butterfly.htm">interactive butterflies</a>.<P><br />

<p>Ben Dove&#8217;s <a href="http://people.interaction-ivrea.it/b.dove/string_thing/">String Thing</a> is a cello-like instrument with four metal bars that can be struck or stroked. Like a fretless instrument, pitch is continuous.<P><br />
<B>Building String Thing: Laser Pointers and Vibrating Rods:</b> What&#8217;s great about the String Thing is two-fold: first, it&#8217;s an ingenious design, and second, Ben rigorously documents how he did it, including some false starts. The steel rods are a &#8220;stroke&#8221; of genius: using magnets, the rods &#8220;vibrate&#8221; as you play them for physical feedback, while a sophisticated combination of laser pointers and webcams calculate your finger position. There&#8217;s plenty of expressive control, as well, though the limited Max/MSP-based demo video doesn&#8217;t quite do the sophistication of the controller justice. Ben has an impressive resume of <a href="http://people.interaction-ivrea.it/b.dove/home/">other projects, as well.<P><br />

<p>What happens when engineers and laptop musicians collaborate, brought together by love for a 16-ton steam engine? Something like <a href="http://www.steam-driven.co.uk/">Steam Driven</a>, a site-specific music performance at the Brighton Fringe Festival last month. <a href="http://www.laptop-jams.com/">Laptop Jams</a>, the laptop performance collective we&#8217;ve covered previously on CDM (see story on <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&#038;task=view&#038;id=371&#038;Itemid=44">European laptop performing</a>), got together with the <a href="http://www.britishengineerium.com/">British Engineerium</a>, a fabulous museum of mechanical antiquities in a restored Victorian pumping station. The electronic artists used sensors and laser gates to translate the mechanical into the digital. Since I couldn&#8217;t see the performance, I wonder if the digital music held its own &#8212; or whether it was overshadowed by the mechanical marvels behind it. A <a href="http://www.laptop-jams.com/steam/movie.html">movie</a> documents the project poetically (good lessons to be learned about documentation here!). What&#8217;s fascinating about the <a href="http://www.cycling74.com">Max/MSP</a> patches that make brief cameos running on PCs and Macs is how they mimic the mechanical structures they&#8217;re tracking. Via <a href="http://musicthing.blogspot.com/2005/06/how-to-sync-16-tonne-steam-engine-to.html">Music Thing</a>.</p>
