<p>Guess who&#8217;s gotten really bad at keeping a lid on upcoming product announcements? The manufacturers.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re suddenly utterly awash with teasers. Yes, it seems from intentional leaks to advance campaigns, we&#8217;re now destined to see every significant new piece of music gear before we see it, cast in shadows and partial photos and more. Apparently, the folks doing publicity think that this will cause people on the Internet to talk about them. They&#8217;re &#8230; right, in fact. And with the biggest American trade show for music gear landing next week, we&#8217;re in a flood of stuff.</p>
<p>I would willfully ignore such things, but I think it&#8217;s worth a quick round-up just to remind ourselves which booths we should visit next week in Anaheim at NAMM. And amidst more predictable teasers, the other good news is, the synths just keep on coming and coming. Who would have thought it? 2012 could be the year of the synth &#8211; again. (Even with MIDI DIN, no less!)</p>

<p>NI tipped me off to their new <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Traktor/">@Traktor</a> feed. There, we see, curiously, something resembling the colored buttons on color-mod monomes. And that&#8217;s all I can see, but I&#8217;m told we&#8217;ll see more from NI soon. (Note that NI doesn&#8217;t have a NAMM booth, so I don&#8217;t necessarily expect a NAMM announcement.) </p>
<p>Oddly, <em>after</em> I made a reference to the StealthMountain account, I see that tweet reads &#8220;Sneak Peak.&#8221; I&#8217;m going to assume that either that was a cheeky attempt to <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/01/finally-a-useful-twitter-bot-it-corrects-people-who-write-sneak-peak/250873/">attract the ire of snarky grammar-correcting Twitter bots</a> after I made mention of them, <em>or</em> that I should shut up as a lot of 2012 will be about me utterly butchering the beautiful German language. </p>

<p><strong>Ken MacBeth</strong> takes the wraps off his MicroMac on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=359055777443549&#038;set=a.100363826646080.666.100000173889011&#038;type=3&#038;theater">The Facebook</a>. &#8220;Micro&#8221; for Ken means basically &#8220;normal size&#8221; for the rest of us &#8211; the guy designs Paul Bunyan-style modulars. The Micro looks nice, indeed, three oscillators, loads of CV, and a VCF, plus Ken hopes for portamento and glide. This is still a prototype, but we hope to catch it in person. Compare the earlier proto design, second from top (which I actually quite like &#8211; anyone else?):</p>

<p>French synth maker <strong>Eowave</strong> is definitely on my must-visit list, with not one but two compelling new synths. The Domino (top) is a little more in the meat-and-potatoes category, a lovely, minimal analog monosynth. Koma (second top) is a bit more modern-looking and different, combining an analog bassline synth with a push-button step sequencer.</p>

<p>More has leaked out about the upcoming <strong>Casio XW-P1</strong>. And yeah, basically, it sounds like what we&#8217;re getting is a general-purpose workstation, more along the lines of what Roland and Yamaha offer than the personality of the beloved CZ series. (SonicState does the math, too &#8211; it&#8217;s been since 1988.) The bad news: it&#8217;s a big workstation keyboard rather than something a bit more unique. The good news: coming from Casio, I&#8217;ll bet we see some serious value pricing &#8230; and you can still get your CZ on via eBay.</p>

<p>We&#8217;ve also got more details on Akai&#8217;s second controller-plus-software combo offering, the <strong>MPC Studio</strong>. (Curiously, if it&#8217;s small enough to carry with you, it&#8217;s called &#8220;Studio.&#8221; If it&#8217;s so big, you have to leave it in your studio, it&#8217;s called &#8220;Renaissance.&#8221; Got it?) As with the <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2012/01/akai-tries-for-mpc-renaissance-with-controllers-new-software/">MPC Renaissance</a>, the big story here is that you get a &#8220;dumb&#8221; hardware controller that doesn&#8217;t produce sound, and the operation itself all happens on your computer via software, a la Native Instruments&#8217; Maschine. Unlike NI, though, Akai doesn&#8217;t really have a track record to speak of in software, so the big variable is how well their software works.</p>
<p>The MPC Studio, meanwhile, looks far more luggable and is presumably more affordable than its nonetheless cool-looking, monster truck-style bigger sibling.</p>
<p>It does look very, very slim. Unfortunately, with all those buttons crammed on the right side, it looks like a remote control for a home theater. I&#8217;ll be interested to try it in person and see if that&#8217;s usable in real life.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m probably most intrigued by Livid&#8217;s latest controller, the CNTRL-R, made in collaboration with M-nus Records and Richie Hawtin. That collaboration is interesting just because of the amount of live parameter control Rich and company are doing live. And Livid and their booth-mates should have loads of good toys. Livid&#8217;s Peter Nyboer writes in comments:</p>

<p>Lovers of the grid for music control now get to reenact the scene in MGM&#8217;s <em>The Wizard of Oz</em>, stepping out of the world of black and white into one of color. The OhmRGB, the latest controller from Austin, Texas-based controller and custom hardware shop Livid Instruments, adds multicolor LEDs behind its array of controls. </p>
<p>We&#8217;ve already seen red, green, and yellow add color feedback on <a href="http://www.novationmusic.com/products/midi_controllers/launchpad">Novation&#8217;s Launchpad</a> (and of course the APC line from Akai). The Livid piece bests Novation&#8217;s three colors with seven possibilities. For those who prefer their grids to come with knobs, faders, and crossfader, the OhmRGB has the same generous complement of controls that its (monochromatic) Ohm64 sibling does. It also has expansion ports for additional flexibility, plugs into USB connectivity and power without the need for drivers, and has <a href="http://lividinstruments.com/hardware_ohmrgb_details.php#editor">extensive options for remapping</a> lights, controls, and interaction, so it works dynamically not only with Ableton Live but any tool you like. Livid also does their woodwork and assembly in Austin, Texas &#8211; keeping the shop on-site was a wise business move, believe me.</p>

Also we&#8217;ve added banking so you can save multiple mappings to the internal memory of the controller. </p></blockquote>

<h3>More RGB Action!</h3>
<p>While Livid doesn&#8217;t make hardware that can be technically qualified as open source, they have built a strong relationship with the DIY community. Their software patches, built in Max/MSP, are available under an open source license, and their hardware is well-suited to hacking and modification. And beyond the finished products themselves, they&#8217;ve got a full-blown DIY platform called <a href="http://lividinstruments.com/hardware_builder.php">Builder</a> and have generally built a good relationship with DIYers through their shop and interaction with the community.</p>
<p>All of that is to say, there&#8217;s a lot happening with exploring what grid controllers can be as hardware hackers and musicians take matters into their own hands. Unlike the OhmRGB, you can&#8217;t easily go out and buy one of these at the moment, but it&#8217;s fantastic to see the rainbow (ahem) of control experimentation out there.</p>
<p>Thanks in particular to Mutis Mayfield, aka Mudo de Nacimiento, who helped remind us of some of the major RGB grid efforts to date. Mudo himself is working a project, seen in the image below.</p>

<p>This project started as a revision for the Octinct from Jonathan, Owen and Jordan whit the aim to give a Octinct unit to some artist at Hangar.org over workshop over the Sonar(matica) 2009 (these workshops were free admitance) but it was evolving into a new project (with new design for the boards) which is the one from the picture.</p></blockquote>

<p>I have to start out with the insanely-awesome Polynome 5000. It&#8217;s about the dreamiest color controller I can imagine, a one-off monome by capricorn one, aka Los Angeles-based monome musician and inventor Colin Mann. Colin describes it thusly:</p>

I started this, believe it or not, before the APC40 was even announced, and at the time there weren’t many products out there like it. <p><strong>Open source RGB grids?</strong></p>
<p>Owen Vallis and Jordan Hochenbaum, aka FlipMu, have been working on their own open source project. It&#8217;s not just RGB &#8211; it&#8217;s also <em>pressure-sensitive</em>, a feature generally missing from these sorts of grid controllers, adding a whole new dimension of possible expression.</p>
<p>Owen shares some other comments, and walks us through yet more RGB and even pressure-sensitive projects:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Livid stuff is always awesome I think. I&#8217;m all for more DIY or any open source projects. There have been a lot of RGB style button grids over the last several years, starting with the <a href="http://unsped.blogspot.com/">Octinct</a> from Johnaton Guberman and Brad Hill ( <-- the original Arduinome Shield designer). The Octinct was finally made open source last year and is now being worked on by the guys at <a href="http://hanger.org/">Hanger.org</a>. There was also the RGB mini Monome by Grumpy Mike at the arduino forums (vimeo video), and also the Lumi from stanford which combined pressure and a touch screen using the spark fun RGB pads in a 4&#215;8.</p>
<p>The Chronome is different (and has been taking so long) because it not only uses a Mega (hopefully allowing for expansion later), but also adds 64 independent pressure and RGB buttons. Trying to solve for noise on the ADC while lighting all 64 RGB leds was super hard to solve &#8230;.but it works now <img src='http://createdigitalmusic.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  woop woop. The other major thing is that the Chronome works natively with SerialOSC from monome, and still works the exact same as a regular monome. The only difference is the Chronome also accepts an RGB message, and send an additional pressure message. This means the Chronome should work with all existing monome apps.</p></blockquote>

<p>Also, there&#8217;s one further device that may be available commercially, though, for now, it remains mysterious. The <a href="http://www.electrixpro.com/tweaker.html">Electrix Tweaker</a> has specs similar to the OhmRGB, but we&#8217;re still waiting for it to ship, and have only the grainy image seen here.</p>
<p>So, there you have it &#8211; color is coming to grids in a big way. We&#8217;ll be watching the development of the OhmRGB, in particular, and it remains the full-color controller you can have right now. And we&#8217;ll watch these more experimental projects, too. It&#8217;s like a rainbow&#8230;</p>

<p>A few decades is a short time in the history of instruments. But something magical is happening: the electronic instrument, the computer, is finally easily shifting into performance scenarios, into improvisation, and into bands. <p>Look no further than Nicolas Jaar. In an insightful performance and conversation for MTV Hive, he reveals how he thinks about music &#8211; and puts his chops where his mouth is. Excerpt:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I think honesty and electronic music weren&#8217;t really tied together for a while &#8230; it was more about forgetting and partying. And now everything is coming together.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>That notion of &#8220;honesty&#8221; appears to cover finding his voice, finding a performance technique, and finding musical ideas.</p>
<p>In my dream world, this is what MTV looks like when you turn on your television, before reality killed the video star.</p>
<p><strong>We&#8217;ve had some reports of difficulty playing the video. We will hopefully get to do our own interview with Mr. Jaar soon, which we&#8217;ll make available to all.</strong></p>
<p>And yes, while I enjoy watching the video, I&#8217;m very unclear what Nico means by &#8220;honesty.&#8221; It seems to be a personal take on what he&#8217;s doing in his own work, and I&#8217;d like to know more, as to me, it&#8217;s unclear. Some reader comments, rather than wanting to know more or questioning what he&#8217;s saying, instead decide to say that so much as posting this video on CDM takes away from the site&#8217;s integrity or suggest that he&#8217;s a bad person or that I don&#8217;t know that people have used sequencers in live bands before 2011. So, yes, that&#8217;s a &#8230; perspective. Carry on. I&#8217;ll continue trying to do actual research. Nico&#8217;s on tour; we&#8217;re waiting for him to get back to the US to do a proper interview, for those with more open-minded attitudes.</p>

<p>In a world of disposable computers and electronics, making something &#8220;custom&#8221; is an antidote to throwaway hardware, a way of putting one&#8217;s own handiwork, care, and attention into the object with which you play music. Of course, it&#8217;s one thing to say it, and another thing to do it, but Nick Francis falls squarely in the &#8220;doer&#8221; camp. A jazz-focused radio broadcaster from Seattle&#8217;s KPLU, Nick says he&#8217;s been chopping up audio since he was doing it with razor blades and tape. Naturally, his digital music controller has the kind of craft in wood that you&#8217;d normally find on an acoustic instrument &#8211; and his music remixes of choice tend toward artists like Coltrane.</p>
<p>Nick&#8217;s work also combines resources from the Web. He says he got started because of a post here on CDM, then went to Livid&#8217;s DIY solution, the <a href="http://lividinstruments.com/hardware_builder.php">Builder DIY system</a>, and DJ TechTools&#8217; arcade buttons. </p>

<p>Nick shares some additional thoughts for CDM &#8211; and I reproduce them, really, because just as he feels indebted to CDM, I feel personally indebted to everyone who shares their work with us on this site and in this community in general:</p>
<blockquote><p>This project never would&#8217;ve happened had I not stumbled upon your website in 2009 or so. I really love your wide-open approach to this whole world of geeks, tinkerers, engineers and artists who make up the core of your community. </p>
<p>Regarding the actual build of the Choppertone, I pretty much covered it in detail in my initial postings to the forums at Livid and DJTT.  The whole build process was really challenging, yet extremely rewarding. Nothing beats the feeling of spending months of detailed work on a project, finally getting it done, and then seeing it work!  </p>
<p>I basically recorded the video for a few friends who had no idea what controllers were about. I tried to find something simple enough musically to demonstrate it.  One of the fun things about jazz is that historically, from the get-go, these musicians were the original &#8220;remixers&#8221;; they could take a melody, tune or phrase, and tweak it, rearrange it and make it their own.  I had been lately been listening to a lot of Fats Waller, so &#8220;Honeysuckle Rose&#8221; was a good fit. I found at least 20 versions of it in the KPLU library, and chose four that were close to the original key and tempo. From there it was just a few days of chopping everything into 4 bar phrases, then finding the ones that seemed to play well with the others.    </p>
<p>As for how I thought the video would be received by the midi controller community, I had no idea. I sensed that this project was going to come off as either really cool&#8230;or really stupid.  All I knew is that it worked for me. </p>
<p>The positive response to the video has simply blown my mind, and the video&#8217;s reach has extended far beyond what I imagined.  I could not believe my eyes when I received an email from the Ableton offices in Berlin a few weeks ago. That was so incredibly cool. I&#8217;m also quite amused by the many comments regarding my age; I have to tell you that my creative spirit is as vibrant now (at 61) as it was when I was an aspiring film student at UCLA at 21.  These days, I&#8217;m quite aware that my days on earth are limited and that the present moment is to be savored. That&#8217;s all you got. </p></blockquote>
<p>I imagine a number of the sentiments there will be familiar &#8211; and I certainly find interests in our wider community that transcend age (and other) barriers.</p>

<p>Owing to a tradition that goes back to the first samplers and hip-hop pioneers, sampling and digital performance have become a kind of instrumental technique. You might play well, you might play poorly, but even working with samples, you can actually <em>play</em>.</p>
<p>You can look at the simple design of the monome as the hardware embodiment of digital, a reflection of an array of pixels. You can see it as an extension of Roger Linn&#8217;s MPC and other drum machine concepts. It&#8217;s probably both those things. But since the monome itself makes no sound, it&#8217;s been software that has made that design musically relevant. While the original vision of the monome was as a blank canvas that could perform any function, ultimately a community of musicians focused their efforts on expanding a single patch, creator Brian Crabtree&#8217;s original mlr. Talk to these monome players, and they&#8217;ll very likely tell you about some little modification they made last night to use in a set they&#8217;re playing tonight, because they wanted some feature or another, or a little subpatcher they borrowed from a friend to solve a problem. Add up all those little hacks, and you get evolution.</p>
<p>Now, descendant mlrv has evolved into a live music-making environment of its own, and not just for the monome. Version 2.0, released this week, supports monome-like controllers such as the Novation Launchpad, Akai APC, and Livid Ohm/Block, but also conventional MPC-style grids like the Akai MPD.</p>
<p>The word the creators use to describe the playing technique: &#8220;hypersampling.&#8221;</p>

<p>mlrv is built in Max/MSP, so if you have a Mac or Windows and version 5 of the software (or Ableton&#8217;s Max for Live), you can edit the patch. Otherwise, you can download a free runtime and use the patch itself for free. Pay US$18, and you get your name on the startup screen and special email news and downloads. Pay US$80, and you get limited edition vinyl from artists galapagoose and &#8216;%&#8217;.</p>
<p>The project is the work of Trent Gill, Michael Felix, and parallelogram; check out developer galapagoose playing with it live in the video at top. (I will say, though, even as I <em>am</em> writing on a Website, you get more out of being in the same room with a live performance.) All the details:<br />

<p>The software will be available February 1, with a release party that evening for the software and music. Also, while we&#8217;ll have details tomorrow, Handmade Music will host performances by galapagoose, %, and other monome artists (alongside chip music, MeeBlippery, and laptopism) on Saturday February 5. <p>Livid Instruments has just revealed their next hardware controller. Well, sort of revealed &#8211; this evening on Twitter, they declared that it was a &#8220;Top secret sneak peek of our new controller.&#8221; Top secret &#8211; you know, just on the Internet. No one will see it there. It&#8217;s full of encoders, if that&#8217;s your thing. It&#8217;s called, cleverly, the &#8220;Code.&#8221; In addition to accompanying Livid&#8217;s own grid controllers, put this next to a monome, and you can manipulate continuous parameters alongside triggers. I could imagine someone doing some insane granular patch with an absurd number of parameters using this. <strong>Update: those encoders are both pushbuttons and encoders,</strong> says Livid, opening up still more possibilities.</p>
<p>Update &#8211; yep, judging from reactions so far, people like them some encoders. </p>
<p>But it&#8217;s doubly worth posting early partly because of this:</p>

<p>Boulier by Yann Girard was one of the nicer entries to our <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2010/06/06/dreams-of-a-musical-future-digitopia-winners-wondrous-creations-one-will-be-real/">musical future competition</a> with Portugal&#8217;s Digitopia at Casa da Musica. Unbeknownst to Yann, Livid was already working on such a design before his entry. At the same time, I prefer his mock-up, entirely made of encoders with nothing else, and with LEDs embedded in the cap. (Knobnome, anyone?) Of course, the Code has one significant advantage &#8212; it&#8217;s real. But who knows, maybe someone will realize this alternative design, too.</p>
<p>Hint: Livid&#8217;s own <a href="http://www.lividinstruments.com/hardware_builder.php">Builder</a> platform would be one option, as it&#8217;s got guts related to the Code and is wired for just this sort of array o&#8217; stuff.</p>

<p>Tired of needing xx more knobs or yy more pads or a specific feature in your control hardware? Ready to dive in and build your own? You&#8217;ve had a variety of options for some time that can help get you started, but Livid&#8217;s new Builder set of modular platforms is uniquely well-suited to the kinds of gear people now want to build. It&#8217;s loaded with inputs and outputs &#8211; necessary for the button- and knob-laden controllers of today &#8211; while at the same time uses modular boards and smart software to ease the learning curve. It&#8217;s probably still a little advanced for your first project (for that, you might try connecting a few knobs to an Arduino first), but if you&#8217;re ready to build something fancier, this should definitely be high on your list. We&#8217;ll have a more detailed look at this hardware in the coming weeks, but here&#8217;s a first look.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>The Brain:</strong> USB-powered, bi-directional MIDI board &#8211; class-compliant, with no drivers needed (including on Linux). Use open-source software to configure and program it, then connect what you need &#8211; even more-complex features like multiplexing buttons and LEDs. (Hint: it&#8217;s tricky to do on your own unless you&#8217;re a pretty advanced hardware person.) Connect to your computer or hardware via USB and standard MIDI in/out DIN (so yes, this works for hardware synth and drum machine fans, too). Note that this chip also supports OSC (OpenSoundControl), so support for that in the future isn&#8217;t out of the question.</li>
<li><strong>Add-on boards:</strong> Push, Slide, Turn, and Breakout modular boards make it easy to tack on features, like buttons, faders, pots, and monome-style grids, in any combination you desire. Once you use the board, you can choose an arrangement you desire &#8211; including even deviating from the grid.</li>
<li><strong>Components:</strong> Finding the right parts can require some trial and error, so Livid will also sell the ones they use on their control surfaces. Sure, LEDs aren&#8217;t difficult to select, but getting the right rubber keypad or potentiometer can be a lifesaver.</li>

<p>The grid is in. While the <a href="http://monome.org">monome</a> remains the standards bearer for hardware with grids of buttons on it, arrays of buttons are suddenly everywhere, in the commercial Akai APC40 and Novation Launchpad, and, from Livid Instruments, the Ohm64 and now the Block. I think it&#8217;s a real compliment to the monome&#8217;s creators &#8211; and the community that has authored ingenious open software for the monome &#8211; that there is this excitement around the design.</p>
<p>The latest entry is Livid&#8217;s Block, a compact, aluminum-and-wood controller that&#8217;s easy to carry and which weighs less than 3 pounds. It&#8217;s not a monome &#8211; it eschews the monome&#8217;s stringent minimalist design aesthetic and adds knobs on top, faders on the side. That layout has made the M-Audio Trigger Finger a blockbuster hit, so I think it could attract people who want more than just buttons. (That&#8217;s why choice is generally a good thing.) But just as importantly, the Block takes cues from the monome beyond the skin-deep. As with the Ohm64, Livid is working to open-source both the guts of the hardware and the software on the computer. The instruments are made by hand using sustainable materials and finishes, manufactured in Texas in their own shop rather than the lowest bidder overseas. The hardware itself encourages hacks and customization. These are principles championed by the monome&#8217;s Brian Crabtree and Kelli Cain, and they&#8217;re badly in need of some company. Livid, like those monome creators, is a handful of individuals rather then a big company, but they give us new hardware that embodies sustainability, openness, and local production &#8211; and that makes the monome and its principles stronger. (Livid has been crafting performance hardware and Max patches for many years.) And while this bus-powered USB MIDI device doesn&#8217;t yet support (OSC) OpenSoundControl, that could come &#8211; without sacrificing conventional MIDI connections to outboard gear when you don&#8217;t have the computer connected. (Clarification: as with the Ohm64, OSC support is not yet available but should be possible. Stay tuned.)</p>

<p>I&#8217;m interested in more open software, so I&#8217;m working on making an editor in Java and would love to hear what else people might want. (SuperCollider looper? Pd algorithmic grid controller? Processing library?) These I hope to make work both with the Livid hardware&#8217;s added faders and knobs, and the monome&#8217;s more minimal design. Of course, OSC will be terrific for computer applications if that comes to pass, but I love the idea of gear that can also talk to MIDI hardware.</p>
<p>I really like Novation&#8217;s Launchpad, but for a little more money, you get a beautiful case, additional controls, and added flexibility, all in gear handcrafted by the maker and with an open approach to hardware and software. Without getting into a debate over the merits one way or another, consider this: <em>you can choose</em>. We didn&#8217;t use to have these kinds of choices in music hardware. The fact that we do now &#8211; not only the ability to choose the nameplate, but the very philosophy behind the device&#8217;s manufacture &#8211; I think can benefit everyone, users and manufacturers alike. It opens up the entire music tech industry to new ideas and new variety.</p>

<p>Look out, <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/apc40/">Akai APC40</a>. There&#8217;s another contender in the emerging Controller With Lots of Buttons And Also Faders and Knobs and Crossfader product category. Livid&#8217;s Ohm64 combines the light-up button grid with faders, knobs, trigger buttons, and most importantly, unique customization options and a lovely wooden case. What&#8217;s unique about this one:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>High-end materials:</strong> anodized aluminum faceplate, &#8220;immersion gold-platted circuit boards&#8221; (guess that&#8217;s circuit bling), an optional wooden body (aluminum is available, as well, but wood is more fun).</li>
<li><strong>Not mass-market:</strong> hand-assembled, small-production Austin creation.</li>
<li><strong>Fully class-compliant, no drivers</strong> (also true of the APC as far as I know, but nice &#8211; and ideal for Linux, too, in case you want to run this with a netbook or a Pd-running souped-up *nix laptop)</li>
<li><strong>Open-source, customizable MIDI talkback:</strong> when you&#8217;re ready to customize just how those LEDs light up, there are included open source tools and fully programmable MIDI mapping</li>
</ul>
<p>Bonus: it comes with a powerful, full-featured VJ app in the box, <a href="http://createdigitalmotion.com/2009/03/19/livid-cell-dna-simple-networkable-multi-headed-vj-app-and-spiritual-successor-to-grid/">Cell DNA</a>, though of course you can use it with anything you like.</p>
<p>The real story to me is the customization. Whereas the APC40 is entirely proprietary in design, has evidently limited MIDI mappings, and a mysterious mechanism for programming two-way communication, the Ohm64 is open, open source, and software-agnostic. If the open source thing catches on, that could mean a community of friendly folk thinking of smart ways to reprogram this thing for different apps. Ironically, that means that in the long run, the Ohm64 could wind up with better Ableton Live integration than the hardware Ableton chose to back &#8211; though all bets are off until we get these devices in our hands.</p>

<p>I would say the APC is probably more direct competition for the Ohm64 than the Monome, despite the 8&#215;8 light-up buttons. The Monome is much lighter and slimmer, it takes a minimalist approach (no big knobs or faders), and uses OpenSoundControl in place of MIDI. The Ohm64 seems likely to appeal to those who weren&#8217;t Monome fans, and visa versa. And some lucky bastards are naturally going to own both.</p>
<p>But the important thing is that the Ohm64 joins the Monome in its crusade for open-source customization of a commercial product. Whatever the Ohm64 is when it ships, it&#8217;s that question of what people can do with it that may determine its real value. I have no doubt people will be reverse engineering the APC40, too &#8212; starting with figuring out how to fake the hardware &#8220;handshake&#8221; it uses so other devices can emulate it in Live. But it&#8217;ll be interesting to see how these different philosophies pan out, so to speak.</p>
<p>I hope to sit down with the Ohm64 as soon as they ship to Hoboken, New Jersey, across the river from me in Livid&#8217;s NYC-area offices. Stay tuned.</p>

<p>Jay Smith of <a href="http://www.lividinstruments.com/">Livid Instruments</a> may be in the business of making controller hardware himself, but that doesn&#8217;t stop him from appreciate the knob-laden goodness of the NAMM show floor. Jay&#8217;s own gear reveals a not-so-secret love of knobs and buttons and faders, and if you&#8217;re into that sort of thing, this year&#8217;s NAMM music trade show had plenty to love &#8211; Akai&#8217;s APC40 controller for Live, Akai&#8217;s MPK keyboard, the Alesis MasterControl, Arturia&#8217;s Factory Experience controller for their soft synth emulations, and even another brutish-looking computer-in-a-keyboard, now with pads, from <a href="http://www.openlabs.com/">Open Labs</a>.</p>
<p>The shots give you a particularly good feel for what the Akai APC40 is like up close and personal. It&#8217;s no accident that Jay himself is a VJ. I really imagine that a number of these devices might be brilliant for running live visuals, though we still have yet to find out exactly how the APC works. I assume it&#8217;ll run as a standard MIDI controller outside Live, but I&#8217;m unclear on the specifics of what that will mean.</p>
