<p><a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/09/07/imaginary-instruments-marker-and-paper-as-controller/">Imagine drawing an interface on paper</a>, then being able to use it as a musical interface. Or, heck, don&#8217;t <em>imagine</em> it &#8211; do it. Unfortunately, the kinds of intelligence necessary to make the music video in yesterday&#8217;s post just aren&#8217;t practical yet. (That is, you could draw a picture of a keyboard, and even use the picture as a music controller, but while you or I could recognize a keyboard from a drum pad and know that line is a fader, a computer would need some sort of advance structure for any recognition to work.) But you can do some really clever things, as folks have shared in comments.</p>
<p>And using some basic paper interfaces, you can make entire instruments for just a few dollars.</p>
<p>Of course, the awesomest way to do anything is with LAZORS. Greg Kellum and Alain Crevoisier presented a paper at last year&#8217;s NIME (a conference for new interface designs for music) proposing a system for making any surface a control surface. Like the music video yesterday, you can configure your surface to function however you like &#8211; even dividing it up into pads and faders. </p>
<p>By now, you&#8217;e likely seen plenty of multi-touch interfaces or means of tracking hands. But, to paraphrase the NIME paper, these either require a special surface (or transparent surface), or they can&#8217;t actually detect when you&#8217;re touching. You can even use multiple cameras or an IR beam, but there are limitations to accuracy and the size of the usable surface that would result. Kellum and Crevoisier use an infrared camera and two illuminators, each built by pointing a laser at a mirrors. </p>
<p>Yawn, you say, been there, done that, seen Jeff Han&#8217;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zGDNFpOMcA">video</a>&#8230; The advantage of this system is that you can use any surface, like your dining room table. And you can configure that surface however you like. There&#8217;s even a freely-downloadable Surface Editor you can extend in Java and Processing. The creators claim they can even get input latency down to a reasonable 10 ms using high-speed cameras.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/db3ll">db3ll</a> has created a keyboard out of paper, and of course it works better than those flimsy rubber &#8220;roll-up&#8221; pianos you see for sale. &#8220;Conductive ink is what I used,&#8221; he says, &#8220;painted on as traces on the non-printed side of the paper.&#8221; That&#8217;s the twist &#8211; I had assumed you&#8217;d use the top of the paper, but the trick is to use the <em>reverse</em> side to provide the &#8220;wiring.&#8221; He also offers advice for making a fader:<span id="more-7336"></span></p>
<blockquote><p> You can make a paper thin fader in much the same way, but it requires a magnet. Cut a slot in a piece of paper, color around the slot with conductive ink (I use the “trace repair” pens sold at electronics supply places… it has a very fine tip), and glue some SVHS tape (resistive side up) under it. Put a thin piece of metal beneath the SHVS tape &#038; use a magnet to conduct between the SVHS tape &#038; the conductive ink. The magnet will stay in position due to the metal (I use package banding) under it, and aside from the magnet, it is roughly the thickness of a couple sheets of paper.</p></blockquote>
<p>Simon Lacelle is also working on a project I&#8217;m eager to see:</p>
<blockquote><p>In a pad controller I’m making using a HUGE Staples calculator, I’m using strips of aluminium foil separated by a sheet of paper with holes at each button as switches merely a milimeter thick, and these are quite responsive.</p></blockquote>
<p>A YouTube uploader by the name of DJ Mocap appeared briefly online with a project that seems to show him controlling Traktor with a drawing. There&#8217;s a camera and some sort of analog input being fed into a circuit board, but I&#8217;m not entirely sure what&#8217;s going on &#8211; though I can think of a couple of ways to make this work. It stumped <a href="http://www.djtechtools.com/2008/08/01/the-5-cent-midi-controller/">DJ Tech Tools&#8217; readers</a>, but I have a feeling it can&#8217;t stump CDM readers, so have at it.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATED &#8211; FAKE (but possible)</strong> Okay, so this turns out to be a Stanton touch controller hiding underneath a piece of paper. Of course, that&#8217;s itself not such a terrible idea &#8211; by having a drawn overlay, you have visual feedback for specific positions on the controller. But furthermore, while this is fake, the idea remains possible &#8211; and more cheaply than buying a piece of Stanton gear to toss under your piece of paper. So I call this &#8220;fake but potentially inspiring.&#8221;</p>

<p>Just to consider moving in the opposite direction, I have to point to Amit Pitaru&#8217;s Sonic Wire Sculptor, an interface for drawing virtually and digitally. Because it&#8217;s digital, you can draw in 3D, do something you can&#8217;t with real-world markers. <p>And back to the realm of the imaginary &#8211; could MPCs of the future be made out of cardboard? (Oh, how I love reading YouTube comments. &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t look too sturdy.&#8221; &#8220;Why do you have your MPC in a box?&#8221; Apparently some people thought this was somehow insulting hip-hop. YouTube comments &#8211; pushing the very frontier of stupidity.)</p>

<h3>Doing it Yourself</h3>
<p>If you&#8217;re interested in entering the world of paper, drawing, and controllers, there are two directions I&#8217;d suggest.</p>
<p>One way to go is to simply start thinking about drawing as an interface. The creator of <a href="http://www.livelab.dk/tablet2midi.php">Tablet 2 MIDI</a>, a MIDI-graphics tablet interface, suggests that using the pen you can draw any interface you like, then map it to tablet input. That concept could certainly be applied more broadly.</p>
<p>As far as using paper and a conductive pen to doodle your own musical creations, it turns out this is one of the easiest ways to learn about resistance in electronics.</p>

<p>This project, which we covered at the end of 2007 and featured at our Handmade Music event, is ideal for giving young people (or the solder-phobic) their first step into electronics. The whole kit fits on a business card; you just need speakers to which you can connect.</p>
<p>The Drawdio project uses the same basic circuit and principle, but attaches it to a pen, making the rig a little more portable and allowing other fascinating experiments. It&#8217;s also available for purchase.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll find countless variations of the basic circuit, because it&#8217;s so simple, and it&#8217;d be a great way to get into the more sophisticated (or at least more complex) ideas here.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s actually quite remarkable to me that JazzMutant remains alone in this market &#8211; and with Stantum focused on the mass market, that could be the case in the future, too. The issue is that doing multi-touch well still costs some money. There are basic implementations on computers that are cheaper, but that restricts you to a few computer models, because slapping multitouch overlays on displays remains pricey. So HP can get a few computers to the mass market, but not without cutting some corners and not even on that company&#8217;s full range. The iPhone has brilliant multi-touch control, but a mobile form factor makes this much easier.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got some videos demonstrating what&#8217;s possible with the Lemur coming soon, as well as some notes on how the software has evolved since I first saw it in its initial release. Even if you don&#8217;t want or can&#8217;t afford a Lemur, it&#8217;s a fascinating demonstration of interaction design and OSC, with lessons (inspiring and tough alike) for other interfaces.</p>

<p>The beauty of using touch for controllers is flexibility. Sure, you give up tactile feedback &#8211; but you can also quickly make your own layouts, make touch controllers an ideal complement to your existing hardware gear (the stuff with physical knobs and faders and pads). </p>
<p>For that reason, we&#8217;re all eagerly anticipating an upcoming version of the awesome OSC-based iPhone/iPod touch controller, TouchOSC. </p>

<p>The included layouts are already fantastic, with rotaries and virtual buttons and multi-faders and toggles and X/Y pads. But custom control would be even better. Creator hexler writes CDM with the latest:</p>

so I hope that as soon as next week it will be available as a free update to all users on the App Store.</p>
<p>Together with this release (1.3) there will be a free editor application to visually design and upload layouts to the device. You can take a look at the last beta version I published if you want, there&#8217;s both Windows and OS X versions available, but I will also prepare a Linux version as soon as possible, of course without the new version of TouchOSC this is but a preview of things to come:</p>

<p>And nicely enough, the editor is built in cross-platform Java, which I think makes a whole lot of sense. (Go Java, Python, etc., rather than getting stuck in hard-to-port platform-specific stuff like Cocoa.)</p>
<p>Thanks, hexler! I don&#8217;t have a video of the new features yet, so instead here&#8217;s a nice novelty &#8211; the beginnings of a creation using the free SuperCollider (which runs OSC natively) in combination with TouchOSC to make a custom step sequencer. Should fuel other ideas, too:</p>

<p>Even online, words have a tendency to linger long after you write them. And I recognize that the risk here is not only what those words mean to me, but others, too. So I want to revisit a topic today in the interest of moving forward.</p>
<p>I wrote a kneejerk post earlier in the life of CDM about <a href="http://www.monotouchlive.com/">MonoTouchLive</a>, a single-touch interface with UI widgets inspired by JazzMutant’s Lemur. MonoTouchLive was (and is) Windows-only, standalone software for controlling Ableton Live. It’s now free of cost.</p>
<p>I’ll be honest: in my original post, I overreacted, and I didn’t choose my words as carefully as I should have. Some regular readers called me out on it at the time. Since that time, I’ve tried to be more careful. Some comment threads referred back to it, though, and the developer, Pablo Martin, has continued to push his tool and has been outspoken about not liking what I wrote.</p>
<p>It’s now clear to me that I can’t just let this go, as Mr. Martin today has posted a multi-page diatribe focused largely on my short, now nearly three-year-old blog post.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.monotouchlive.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=22&amp;Itemid=54">A little of JUSTICE please</a></p>
<p>To be clear: I got carried away. I have since come to the realization that copying – loosely or closely – isn’t such a bad thing. They’re a learning process, and if something really is original, it does tend to shine through. </p>
<p>Also, to my knowledge, Mr. Martin is correct: the layout on the Lemur was apparently a mock-up to show what the Lemur would look like if configured with the layout of the MonoTouchLive. I incorrectly said that both the widgets and layout had been copied, as I misunderstood the image I saw. Axou created that design as part of a <a href="It&rsquo;s worth noting, in fact, that I wasn&rsquo;t alone &ndash; jaded, perhaps, by people copying designs instead of making their own, many in the Ableton forum responded the same way. The lesson here is, if something is a copy, you may want to acknowledge that and explain your intentions. The lesson for the rest of us is, we probably should have considered the author&rsquo;s intentions before responding.">thread</a> with some complaints about the similarity to the Lemur widgets, but I now try to make CDM less like a quick forum post. </p>
<p> <span id="more-5775"></span>
<p>I don’t think there’s anything really wrong with MonoTouchLive. It may indeed be useful to some people, and I expect (as I even said in that original, ill-advised post) that the growing availability of affordable touch and multitouch screen hardware will mean many more such creations and ideas. DJTechTools even suggested a US$250 solution involving something like MonoTouchLive and a small, USB-powered external display:</p>

<p>There are some of Mr. Martin’s remaining contentions, however, with which I still take some issue. First, he implies that this was some sort of ongoing thread on CDM. It wasn’t; there were two stories out of several thousand, but as is clear from the URLs he copied, they were posted on the same day, September 11, 2006. I don’t know what was going on with me that day, but I should have thought before I published. I understand his frustration, though – because I didn’t write a follow-up post, those stories continued to come up on Google. But, at least I can say truthfully, I didn’t mean for this to become an ongoing issue.</p>
<p>Second, while it’s true that MonoTouchLive didn’t copy a Lemur layout, it did clearly copy the look of the Lemur interface <em>widgets</em>. My original appeal, if poorly worded, was for creativity and variety, and I stand by that now. Mr. Martin is clearly a developer with some skill, and I’d love to see something that looks different. I stand by that criticism now as before – and because I’d love to see new visual ideas. </p>
<p>It’s worth noting, in fact, that I wasn’t alone – jaded, perhaps, by people copying designs instead of making their own, many in the Ableton forum responded <a href="http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?p=333970&amp;highlight=#333970">the same way</a>. The lesson here is, if something is a copy, you may want to acknowledge that and explain your intentions. The lesson for the rest of us is, we probably should have considered the author’s intentions before responding.</p>
<p>Lastly, while “JUSTICE” claims Dexter “saw the light” of MonoTouchLive’s fixed layout, I still like the idea of modular, editable layouts over fixed layouts. It’s part of the whole advantage of a touchscreen over hardware. The “JUSTICE” article also implies – intentionally or not – that JazzMutant was following MonoTouchLive’s lead, which I think is unlikely. That said, I’m sure MonoTouchLive could be useful to someone with a fixed layout, and they have their advantages – muscle memory, for one.</p>
<p><strong>What Really Matters to Me: Looking Forward</strong></p>
<p>I won’t say anything more about this matter. I think what JazzMutant did was really important, and I think MonoTouchLive is a worthy idea. But what I’m most interested to cover in the future is work that takes touch in new directions. </p>
<p>For touch and multi-touch to really catch on, I think these interfaces need to be substantially different in function and experience than conventional hardware knobs and faders. I’d aim that criticism at JazzMutant as much as I would at MonoTouchLive. I’m really eager to see more experimentation. I shouldn’t have pushed that desire on Mr. Martin and his work, though, and for that, I’m sorry.</p>
<p>Just complaining in this case was out of line. I believe criticism and frank criticism is part of the function of blogs – not pulling any punches, as the saying goes. But I also believe in being constructive, and I think those comments weren’t.</p>
<p>I expect I’ll continue to make mistakes, and I will be the first to defend the value of writing frankly on the Web – warts and all – and responding. It’s because of a few years of doing that, in fact, that I think I have a different perspective in 2009 than in 2005 and 2006 – because of your feedback. So always keep it coming.</p>
<p>I don’t view my role as a cheerleader, in case that isn’t already clear. But because I believe in the value of criticism, I’ll be working harder than ever to make sure it’s the right kind. Comment threads are comment threads, but I hope we’ll all consider that we’re leaving words for strangers around the world.</p>

<p>Liz McLean Knight aka Quantazelle catches up with one of our laptopist idols: edIT, the talented solo artist and Glitch Mob member. I won&#8217;t insult what he does by giving it a dumb name (&#8221;Glitch Hop?&#8221;). Suffice to say, edIT is adept at bringing insane musical chops to live laptop performance.</p>
<p>Liz got to geek out with edIT about the details of his live setup, which now drops the M-Audio Trigger Finger for the visual feedback and fluid multi-touch flexibility of a JazzMutant Lemur. (All due love to the Trigger Finger. But I think that would have been like, when I was a child, trading my Knight Rider <a href="http://www.originalbigwheel.com/">Big Wheel</a> for the full-sized KITT.)</p>
<p>edIT tells Liz just what this is all about, how he puts together his live set, and what the technical setup means for him musically. He also talks strategy. Sometimes, that means keeping the integrity of the tunes by loading changes into Ableton Live&#8217;s pre-composed Arrange View rather than triggering relatively mundane changes of loops manually. At the same time, that frees him up to work with more radical changes with effects and the like &#8211; stuff that may actually be interesting. So, no, just glimpsing the Arrange View will <em>not</em> land edIT on <a href="http://www.deadact.com/">deadAct.com</a> &#8212; in fact, edIT and Glitch Mob are just the kind of antidote we need.</p>
<p>Interview audio quality is low, but it&#8217;s well worth the listen for all the details.</p>
<p>While we&#8217;re at it, here&#8217;s more insight into edIT&#8217;s unique IDM and Hip Hop-inspired world, including the <strong>greatest anti-electronic music quotes of all time</strong>. </p>

<p>XLR8R TV in one of their nicest episodes ever got to play a street gig in San Francisco on Haight with the Glitch Mob. Now, playing outdoor gigs in San Francisco isn&#8217;t exactly that big a deal &#8211; hey, it&#8217;s not New York City, where you&#8217;ll last about 2 bars before meeting the NYPD. But it&#8217;s fantastic to see what the Mob are all about, and the performance is terrific.</p>
<p>Most importantly, this video includes this poetic diatribe by An Angry Man, which I will transcribe here in the hope that someone puts it on a t-shirt for us:</p>

<p>For more insight into edIT&#8217;s thoughts on music in general, here&#8217;s an extensive video interview. This comes from an apparently defunct show called The Craft. The show title has certain <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115963/">unfortunate associations with bad girl-witch movies</a>, and pops up odd bits of trivia that make it seem as though it was targeted at old people or kittens. (Turntables, associated with hip hop? Who knew!) But the production itself is lovely, and edIT has some great things to say. And the show producers got one thing very right: edIT is part of the future of music.</p>

<p>TUIO is a simple but powerful emerging protocol for multitouch control for live music and visuals, as used on the powerful live tangible synth <a href="http://mtg.upf.es/reactable/">reacTable</a>. Apparently no one told Apple, however. While the App Store rubber-stamps useless toys like fake cigarette lighter flames, they bizarrely rejected a powerful application by a leading digital artist that would enable standardized TUIO control – for free. (More back story below; see an example in action above.)</p>
<p>As a blogger, my reaction is usually to whine and pontificate, for better or worse. The engineering approach would be to find some hack away the problem. That’s what Andrew Turley did with the TUIO protocol. So, Apple won’t allow an app that does the trick? Why not go back to what developers did before the SDK, and just use the iPhone browser?</p>
<p>As Andrew explains it:</p>
<blockquote><p>After reading the story I started thinking about seeing how far one could push Safari as an application platform, using web apps to get around Apple&#8217;s tight control of the app store. Since you would be connecting to another computer anyway to use an OSC application, why not just have the app be a web app running on a web server somewhere on the local network? The web server can then take care of things like sending out OSC messages or playing music or doing whatever it is people want to do.</p>
<p>To that end I created a little system that implements the TUIO protocol. You use an iPhone to run a web app, which in turn talks to the web server, which in turn sends OSC messages.</p>

<p>Needless to say, there are some downsides: you have to run the Python server, you’re more limited in input and control than you would be in a real app, and you’re stuck inside the Safari browser, which could be a bit inconvenient. So I’m not backing down from my original complaint – I don’t see Apple doing anyone a service by blocking this kind of app, and the only rational explanation seems to be that the folks doing the review process don’t understand <em>what the app is</em>.</p>
<p>Most importantly, I do know that all our griping was sent to Apple, so I’m hopeful the App Store will reconsider the decision once they get it.</p>
<p>But I love solutions, too, and this can be one for many applications. </p>
<p>It also illustrates an important point: the browser on mobile devices (Apple and otherwise) could be a powerful outlet. It <em>doesn’t </em>always make sense to build an entire application; there will be various cases in which a little browser tool will do a job. Need a quick remote control for a live performance / art installation / club lighting rig? You might try the easy solution with the browser first.</p>

<p>Since the dawn of computing, developers have been free to create whatever software they can imagine for computers. Windows, Mac, UNIX, Linux, Atari, Amiga, Apple II, Commodore 64 &#8211; it doesn&#8217;t matter. Come up with an idea, and short of doing something destructive on the system, you can make it work on a computer. It&#8217;s this freedom that has made the computer age possible. Game consoles have been different, a relic of the days when cartridges were physical objects you put in the machine. But mobile devices have generally acted more or less like computer platforms &#8211; look at Windows Mobile, Symbian, Linux, Android, Palm OS, Palm&#8217;s Web OS, and so on. It wouldn&#8217;t be odd to expect the same of the iPhone or iPod touch, which is essentially a Mac running on a low-power platform with a mobile-optimized set of libraries. The iPod doesn&#8217;t even connect to a wireless phone network; it uses WiFi just like your computer.</p>
<p>As musicians and artists, this sort of freedom has given us the freedom to make expressive music and art using powerful tools. That same freedom hasn&#8217;t applied to comparatively restrictive game platforms, which is why music apps for platforms like PSP and Nintendo DS require hacking hardware and software.</p>
<p>But then there&#8217;s the iPhone / iPod touch. Apple claims that they create a superior user experience by controlling quality, and they use that control to pick and choose which applications they think are appropriate for their phone. Never mind that a whole lot of what&#8217;s available on the iTunes store is simply worthless crap. And, frankly, that&#8217;s okay &#8211; users pick and choose the good stuff, and a lot of it&#8217;s really great.</p>
<p>But far from simply protecting mobile carriers like AT&#038;T from abusive apps, it&#8217;s clear from developer experiences that Apple has extended that supposedly superior judgment to second-guessing developers on design and application purpose. </p>
<p>The latest victim: a fully free wireless multitouch server that would empower iPod touch and iPhone users to control live art and perform, created by one of the world&#8217;s leading interactive artists, Memo Akten. It seems Apple&#8217;s powers that be rejected the app because they simply don&#8217;t understand what the heck it is.</p>
<p>The story so far:<span id="more-5350"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>I received the following response from Apple: &#8220;Thank you for submitting your application &#8220;MSA Remote&#8221;.  We need clarification in regards to the functionality of the application as we do not have access to the interactive installations that the application controls.  If possible, please provide login information for a server application we can use to review your application.&#8221;</p>
<p>So I sent them 3 desktop apps: a standard TUIO client, a MSATouch client (multiple devices can control a single client without interference), and an OSC Dumper so they could see all the messages being sent in detail. </p></blockquote>
<p>Even after receiving that documentation, Apple decided that they knew better than their users and developers. Result: no app. </p>
<blockquote><p>Apple&#8217;s response to this app is &#8220;We&#8217;ve reviewed your application, MSA Remote, and we have determined that this application contains minimal user functionality and will not be appropriate for the App Store.&#8221;</p>
<p>I find it hard to believe that a FREE TUIO SERVER for iPhone and iPod touch is not suitable for the App Store!! Please leave comments below if you think it is suitable and I will get back to them to try and sort it out.</p></blockquote>

<p>TUIO, for the record, is the <a href="http://tuio.lfsaw.de/">open multitouch platform</a> employed in the powerful, expressive <a href="http://mtg.upf.es/reactable/">reacTable tangible interface</a> that has been used by the likes of (Mac user) <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/07/02/interactive-table-as-synth-via-new-better-bjork-tour-vids-microsoft-surface-snickering/">Bjork</a>.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s be clear. The point here is not just to rant. Memo is looking for comments from users. I&#8217;m hopeful that an upswell of support could show Apple the error of their ways and get them to correct course on this one, and I&#8217;ll applaud them if they do that.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s also be clear: restrictive platforms are bad for artists. Apple is setting a dangerous precedent, and I&#8217;m frankly tired of the conventional assumption that they&#8217;re always right. I think the restrictiveness of the platform &#8211; well beyond what is &#8220;safe&#8221; for users or what might endanger Apple&#8217;s relationship with carriers like AT&#038;T &#8211; is simply wrong-headed. The reason we love platforms like the Mac is that they have empowered us to express ourselves freely. And having seen the power of the Mac as a platform over the years, I&#8217;d be disingenuous not to point out that the iPhone has lost a big part of that soul.</p>
<p>The good news is, complaining and whining and griping <em>can</em> be productive. <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/11/iphone_app/">Tweetie</a>, a powerful Twitter app that was censored because it might expose users to profanity on the open Web service, did make its way to the store after massive public outcry.</p>
<p>So, as I say, I don&#8217;t rant just because I like the sound of my own typing. I hope that the rest of you will join in, and it&#8217;ll make a difference.</p>

<p>Touchscreens are often compared to the ground-breaking &#8211; if imaginary &#8211; designs of <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation</em>. But Brazilian Paulo Egidio Silva must be a real Trekker. His elaborate touchscreen panel configuration really looks like the <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/LCARS">LCARS<br />
computer system</a> simulated on the TV show.</p>
<p>Of course, that isn&#8217;t to say this isn&#8217;t a practical system. By making extensive use of the MIDI SDK for Cubase, the Dragon MIDI rig controls every element of a Cubase session, from mixing to routing to adjusting plug-in parameters. It actually has three elements:</p>
<p>1. A multi-screen touchscreen for selecting mix and send settings and changing routings<br />
2. A conventional motorized control surface (the <a href="http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/products/mixers/01v96/index.html">Yamaha 01V96</a>) for mixing on real faders<br />
3. A hybrid of screen and physical gear, by which plug-in instruments get both an interactive screen <em>and</em> physical encoders</p>
<p>If Geordi LaForge happens to be your mix engineer, you&#8217;ll be ready. Here&#8217;s my understanding of how it breaks down. (I couldn&#8217;t find additional documentation beyond the video, so Paulo, if you&#8217;re out there, we&#8217;d love to hear from you!)<span id="more-5199"></span></p>
<p>Touchscreen Panel: 16-strip mixer, controlling up to 128 tracks. The idea is to use the motorized mixer for physical mixer control, but jump between and record-arm tracks, sends, and the like using the touchscreen. </p>
<p>Virtual patch points: An additional screen provides sends and buses and a virtual patch bay for connecting them.</p>
<p>Panning: A graphical display lets you select pan position &#8211; apparently stereo only for now, but surround would be an obvious application.</p>
<p>Windows, shortcuts, zoom, etc.: Button shortcuts along the side of the screen and zoom encoders let you easily navigate your set and zoom around.</p>
<p>Screen with actual physical controllers: Plug-in parameters are mapped to a screen that has physical controllers on it. You see the parameters and position on the screen, but you actually tweak a real encoder. Look about four minutes into the video &#8212; the effect is really striking. </p>
<p>Special Liquid Mix shortcuts: The appeal of Focusrite&#8217;s Liquid Mix is virtualizing beloved vintage gear. But these guys take it quite a few steps further, with shortcut screens decorated with photos of the real gear.</p>

<p>Side note: just to illustrate how incredible the fake computer displays on the 1980s Star Trek series were, the &#8220;touch displays&#8221; were originally just backlit Plexiglass. And I think that, in turn, illustrates the value of doing design in the physical world before the virtual one &#8211; if they <em>hadn&#8217;t</em> had to work as real-world lighting displays before being translated to virtual animations, they might not have been as distinctive. Michael Okuda, the LCARS designer, likely had no idea he would influence later thinking about how real, functional touchscreens could work. </p>

<p>We&#8217;ve got further compelling evidence Apple doesn&#8217;t really own multi-touch and multi-touch gestures &#8212; <em>and</em> that other devices and interfaces will press forward (which is a good thing for everyone). Lest you think I&#8217;m straying too far from creating digital music, by the way, I think this means lots of new music apps &#8211; as musicians have devoured multi-touch more than any other group (and certainly have used it for the coolest stuff).</p>
<p>I am concerned about how multi-touch innovation will wrangle with over-zealous intellectual property legal wrangling. But hopefully I made it clear that, even <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/02/10/intellectual-property-multi-touch-will-apple-ip-stifle-innovation/">with my concerns about Apple</a>, the report that Google had pulled multi-touch capabilities to please Apple was full of question marks.</p>
<p>Luke Hutchison is more of an expert in this field than any Silicon Valley rumor reporter. Luke pulled off the kernel module hack that turns the Android G1 into a multi-touch gesture-capable device (with, incidentally, some examples that have tantalizing possibilities for musical applications). He has detailed instructions on that, if you&#8217;re interested &#8211; and his familiarity with the code gives him a compelling argument that <strong>Google did not cave to Apple &#8211; and Apple may not even have relevant patents in this case</strong>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth reading his whole story as it&#8217;s full of technical details as far as multi-touch&#8217;s future on G1, but here&#8217;s the executive summary as far as Apple blocking multi-touch on Android:</p>
<blockquote><p>(1) The G1 was simply never intended to be a multi-touch device.<br />
(2) Apple&rsquo;s multitouch patent may not even cover the pinch gesture.<br />
(3) Google *is* interested in multitouch capabilities, it&rsquo;s just nowhere near the top of their priority list.<br />
(4) Google will deal with legal issues if and when they come up, but that hardly stops them doing something they think should be done.<br />
(5) Apparently the driver for a resistive MT-capable/iPhone-like touchscreen was checked into the git kernel tree after the 1.0 release, so we now have (at least?) two MT-capable drivers in the tree.</p></blockquote>
<p>In other words, if you make an iClone, expect to hear from Apple legal. If you just want to use or develop multi-touch devices and interfaces, rest easy &#8211; because even if Apple decides to make trouble, they&#8217;re likely facing even more multi-touch gesture-controlled devices and law teams to back them up.</p>
