<p>Austrian Composer Peter Ablinger has transformed a child speaking so that it can be played as MIDI events on a mechanically-controlled piano, making the piano a kind of speech speaker. <a href="http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2009/10/vocoding-with-piano.html">Via Matrixsynth</a>, the readers at <a href="http://hackaday.com/2009/10/05/vocoding-with-a-piano/">Hack a Day</a> get fairly involved with how this may be working.</p>
<p>It seems not quite accurate to describe this as vocoding in the strictest sense, so much as a simple transformation to a (much) lower frequency resolution &#8211; that is, the 88 keys of the piano. Ablinger, for his part, describes the events as &#8220;pixels.&#8221; It&#8217;s pretty extraordinary that without a bandpass filter, you get something approximating the noisy sibilance of the speech, but this seems to be the result of having lots of events (that is, lots of resolution in terms of time). <em><strong>Edit:</strong> Listening again, the short answer to how you can hear so much of the voice through the piano seems to be, you can&#8217;t; the original is almost certainly mixed in. It&#8217;s nonetheless an interesting effect, and I&#8217;d like to hear the piano on its own.</em> In other words, the basic process is, 1) convert the sound spectrum of the recorded voice to a series of MIDI events, and 2) play back the translated MIDI file. You can see that the MIDI playback is accomplished with Pd (Pure Data) running on a <del datetime="2009-10-07T02:09:29+00:00">Windows</del> Linux/KDE netbook, though it&#8217;s not clear what was used to do the original conversion. (The screen shot with side-by-side audio and MIDI appears as though it may be for demonstration purposes, only.)</p>
<p><strong>Correction:</strong> The work is absolutely done in custom software developed by the composer in Pd (<a href="http://pure-data.info">Pure Data</a>). It&#8217;s an ideal tool for the job, and free and open source. I wouldn&#8217;t dare try to replicate the results here, but this is fantastic inspiration for playing with sound in Pd.</p>
<p>One Windows tool that&#8217;s capable of the job is TS Audiotomidi, as observed by Hack a Day spacecoyote. Whether or not that&#8217;s what&#8217;s at work here &#8211; and it may well be &#8211; that utility is itself interesting. <em>Edit: Yeah, far more likely the whole thing was done in Pd. And Pd should be up to the task.</em></p>

<p>Of course, this is to say nothing of the lovely work done on the mechanical piano. It&#8217;s a beautiful piece. Here&#8217;s hoping some government bureaucrats got the message of the declaration. Now, we just need a chorus of something really loud &#8211; say a thousand trumpets &#8211; shouting out the <a href="http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/">Universal Declaration of Human Rights</a>.</p>

<p>Take a weekend, and make something: that&#8217;s the challenge behind the Music Hack Day, which joins a growing phenomenon of events built around collective creation. (CDM held its own tangible interface <a href="http://hackday.noisepages.com/">hackday</a> online, which I definitely hope to follow up soon!) Initiated by Dave Haynes of music sharing service <a href="http://soundcloud.com">Soundcloud</a>, the Hack Day has already hit London. Many of the events were Web app-based and focused on consumption rather than creation of music, but we also saw a <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/14/music-hackday-goodies-robot-driven-radio-free-chordal-synth-lyrics-by-decade-more/">chordal synth plug-in</a> and <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/15/more-hackday-goodies-with-a-beer-bottle-percussion-machine/">beer bottle percussion instrument</a>.</p>
<p>The Berlin Hack Day, which wound up earlier today, offers still more projects focused on the creation side of music hacking. Having Ableton and Native Instruments as sponsors likely helped the mood. And as you&#8217;d expect from one of the world capitals of creative hacking, Berliners don&#8217;t disappoint.</p>
<p>Among the projects: a beautiful, elegant 3D sequencer, a fun bird-and-sky multitouch soundmaker with multitouch trackpad input, and a robotic xylophone controlled by monome. Someone even worked out a way to turn NI&#8217;s Maschine into a rhythm game, complete with Street Fighter sounds.</p>

<p>Monomist Rob Böhnke and Ramsey Arnaoot created one of my favorite hackday projects so far: a monome-controlled robotic xylophone. The ingredients: one monome grid controller, one Java application for step sequencing to the output, one Arduino open source controller board, and one terrific xylophone &#8220;robot&#8221; made of an array of servos that strike the bars of the instrument. Oh, and some hot glue and wood, of course.<span id="more-7565"></span></p>

<p>Proof that musical visualizers don&#8217;t always have to be trippy, futuristic, <em>Tron</em>-like 3D landscapes (and that&#8217;s me speaking as a fan of such things), Gernot Poetsch instead chose a whimsical environment with clouds and cartoon birds, inspired by the graphic identity of Twitter. (No actual Twitter is involved, meaning you lose the, ahem, unreliable, buggy, unfiltered chat network but keep the cutesy happy sky! Works for me!)</p>
<p>The visuals are built in Quartz Composer, which via OSC transmits messages to synthesis language <a href="http://chuck.cs.princeton.edu/">ChucK</a> for noisemaking. The surprise is, the multitouch input is not a Lemur or an iPhone &#8211; it&#8217;s the new MacBook touchpad under Snow Leopard!</p>

<p>iLoveAcid is a beautiful-looking nodal sequencer by Jakob Penca which uses wireframe &#8220;tracks&#8221; to guide music playback through a sequencer, transmitting events to your soundmaker of choice via MIDI or OSC. By using curved timelines and connections, it&#8217;s a veritable model railroad of music, in which formations combine to form more complex structures instead of simply stepping across a grid. Despite appearances, it is so far only two-dimensional &#8211; but then, the z displacement could easily be assigned to some form of modulation. I&#8217;m really eager to see the video of this.</p>
<p>One ingredient: Processing, which makes it easier to write visual code and to connect to Java libraries.</p>

<p>The hardware controller for Native Instruments&#8217; <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/maschine/">Maschine</a> software drum machine has been adapted to other software, like Ableton Live. But this is surely the first time it&#8217;s been made into a <em>game</em>. Using Maschine&#8217;s MIDI output as a game control and sounds from Street Fighter, MaschineFighter is a simple, Simon-style rhythm game. <em>Unlike</em> Simon, though, there&#8217;s a twist &#8211; instead of rote patterns generated in advance, you face off against a friend and try to out-rhythm each other, battle style. I think it&#8217;s actually a pretty brilliant idea, and could become a new sensation for us electronic music nerds &#8211; not to mention, it&#8217;ll finally test our rhythm in a way electronic performance often does not. (<strong>Correction:</strong> It is Mac-only, making use of the PYMIDI Objective-C based library, which, since everything else that starts with &#8220;Py&#8221; usually means Python &#8211; a la jThings that mean Java &#8211; I assumed, incorrectly, was built on Python. But anyway, if you like the idea, carry on! And, actually, having a pure Objective-C CoreMIDI interface is also pretty awesome.)</p>

Or, heck, don&#8217;t <em>imagine</em> it &#8211; do it. Unfortunately, the kinds of intelligence necessary to make the music video in yesterday&#8217;s post just aren&#8217;t practical yet. (That is, you could draw a picture of a keyboard, and even use the picture as a music controller, but while you or I could recognize a keyboard from a drum pad and know that line is a fader, a computer would need some sort of advance structure for any recognition to work.) But you can do some really clever things, as folks have shared in comments.</p>
<p>And using some basic paper interfaces, you can make entire instruments for just a few dollars.</p>
<p>Of course, the awesomest way to do anything is with LAZORS. Greg Kellum and Alain Crevoisier presented a paper at last year&#8217;s NIME (a conference for new interface designs for music) proposing a system for making any surface a control surface. Like the music video yesterday, you can configure your surface to function however you like &#8211; even dividing it up into pads and faders. </p>
<p>By now, you&#8217;e likely seen plenty of multi-touch interfaces or means of tracking hands. But, to paraphrase the NIME paper, these either require a special surface (or transparent surface), or they can&#8217;t actually detect when you&#8217;re touching. You can even use multiple cameras or an IR beam, but there are limitations to accuracy and the size of the usable surface that would result. Kellum and Crevoisier use an infrared camera and two illuminators, each built by pointing a laser at a mirrors. </p>
<p>Yawn, you say, been there, done that, seen Jeff Han&#8217;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zGDNFpOMcA">video</a>&#8230; The advantage of this system is that you can use any surface, like your dining room table. And you can configure that surface however you like. There&#8217;s even a freely-downloadable Surface Editor you can extend in Java and Processing. The creators claim they can even get input latency down to a reasonable 10 ms using high-speed cameras.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/db3ll">db3ll</a> has created a keyboard out of paper, and of course it works better than those flimsy rubber &#8220;roll-up&#8221; pianos you see for sale. &#8220;Conductive ink is what I used,&#8221; he says, &#8220;painted on as traces on the non-printed side of the paper.&#8221; That&#8217;s the twist &#8211; I had assumed you&#8217;d use the top of the paper, but the trick is to use the <em>reverse</em> side to provide the &#8220;wiring.&#8221; He also offers advice for making a fader:<span id="more-7336"></span></p>
<blockquote><p> You can make a paper thin fader in much the same way, but it requires a magnet. Cut a slot in a piece of paper, color around the slot with conductive ink (I use the “trace repair” pens sold at electronics supply places… it has a very fine tip), and glue some SVHS tape (resistive side up) under it. Put a thin piece of metal beneath the SHVS tape &#038; use a magnet to conduct between the SVHS tape &#038; the conductive ink. The magnet will stay in position due to the metal (I use package banding) under it, and aside from the magnet, it is roughly the thickness of a couple sheets of paper.</p></blockquote>
<p>Simon Lacelle is also working on a project I&#8217;m eager to see:</p>
<blockquote><p>In a pad controller I’m making using a HUGE Staples calculator, I’m using strips of aluminium foil separated by a sheet of paper with holes at each button as switches merely a milimeter thick, and these are quite responsive.</p></blockquote>
<p>A YouTube uploader by the name of DJ Mocap appeared briefly online with a project that seems to show him controlling Traktor with a drawing. There&#8217;s a camera and some sort of analog input being fed into a circuit board, but I&#8217;m not entirely sure what&#8217;s going on &#8211; though I can think of a couple of ways to make this work. It stumped <a href="http://www.djtechtools.com/2008/08/01/the-5-cent-midi-controller/">DJ Tech Tools&#8217; readers</a>, but I have a feeling it can&#8217;t stump CDM readers, so have at it.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATED &#8211; FAKE (but possible)</strong> Okay, so this turns out to be a Stanton touch controller hiding underneath a piece of paper. Of course, that&#8217;s itself not such a terrible idea &#8211; by having a drawn overlay, you have visual feedback for specific positions on the controller. But furthermore, while this is fake, the idea remains possible &#8211; and more cheaply than buying a piece of Stanton gear to toss under your piece of paper. So I call this &#8220;fake but potentially inspiring.&#8221;</p>

<p>Just to consider moving in the opposite direction, I have to point to Amit Pitaru&#8217;s Sonic Wire Sculptor, an interface for drawing virtually and digitally. Because it&#8217;s digital, you can draw in 3D, do something you can&#8217;t with real-world markers. (Oh, how I love reading YouTube comments. &#8220;Doesn&#8217;t look too sturdy.&#8221; &#8220;Why do you have your MPC in a box?&#8221; Apparently some people thought this was somehow insulting hip-hop. YouTube comments &#8211; pushing the very frontier of stupidity.)</p>

<h3>Doing it Yourself</h3>
<p>If you&#8217;re interested in entering the world of paper, drawing, and controllers, there are two directions I&#8217;d suggest.</p>
<p>One way to go is to simply start thinking about drawing as an interface. The creator of <a href="http://www.livelab.dk/tablet2midi.php">Tablet 2 MIDI</a>, a MIDI-graphics tablet interface, suggests that using the pen you can draw any interface you like, then map it to tablet input. That concept could certainly be applied more broadly.</p>
<p>As far as using paper and a conductive pen to doodle your own musical creations, it turns out this is one of the easiest ways to learn about resistance in electronics.</p>

<p>This project, which we covered at the end of 2007 and featured at our Handmade Music event, is ideal for giving young people (or the solder-phobic) their first step into electronics. The whole kit fits on a business card; you just need speakers to which you can connect.</p>
<p>The Drawdio project uses the same basic circuit and principle, but attaches it to a pen, making the rig a little more portable and allowing other fascinating experiments. It&#8217;s also available for purchase.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ll find countless variations of the basic circuit, because it&#8217;s so simple, and it&#8217;d be a great way to get into the more sophisticated (or at least more complex) ideas here.</p>

<p>&#8220;Locative art,&#8221; the idea that somehow location will feed into music and visuals, has eluded culture. <p>That is, until you unleash a nearly 6-liter V8 <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_LTD_Crown_Victoria">Ford LTD Crown Victoria</a> on the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats, and your driving gets translated to music. Now it makes sense. And sweeping through the salty dust in one of America&#8217;s greatest action-car-chase cars of all time, manipulating music on a Max/MSP software patch, all becomes right with the world. (That&#8217;s how it is in my head, anyway.)</p>
<p>The planet is your control surface.</p>
<p>Such is the project sent by co-creator Jesse Stiles, who worked with Rich Pell (and editor/documentarian Olivia Robinson) under the name Face Removal Services to perform this vehicular musical production. (Thank, as well, The Center for Land Use Interpretation / GPS Expo 2006. PS &#8211; I think we now know what to do with all those clunkers Americans are turning in for Cash for Clunkers.)</p>
<p>Now, this covers only X and Y axis. I think we need to add the Z-axis, for base jumpers. (I had a dream last night in which I was hang gliding from the rim of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River below, a reminder that the Earth &#8211; and computer interfaces &#8211; do not have to be flat.)</p>

<p>What really impresses me about these projects is that Amanda has made both the project <em>and</em> the curriculum &#8211; that is, she can teach you to make these, too! It&#8217;s often easier to make something for yourself alone than it is to make it reproducible, so I do admire that in a design.</p>

<p>Making music into an object &#8211; the central genius of recording &#8211; could be a wonderful thing. But the CD was always somewhat utilitarian as a distribution mechanism, with its easily-splintered plastic jewel case and inserted artwork that paled next to the grand visions of the LP.</p>
<p>Moldover is the latest artist to experiment with ways of re-imagining the musical object. Already a fan of custom sonic circuitry, he made his CD into a circuit board. Some of it is just aesthetic, like the printed lettering. But there is also integrated noise-making circuitry for a very simple optical Theremin (well, at least, a light sensor-driven oscillator), plus a headphone jack. There&#8217;s actually quite a lot of function you can get out of that when plugging into a computer.</p>
<p>The album itself is comprised jazzy bleepy jams (in varying proportions). You do pay for this deluxe, handmade circuit goodness. The US$25 &#8220;Pocket Edition&#8221; seems to be the sweet spot, with a pocketable version of the circuit board. It still has a built-in speaker, turning the jewel case into self-sufficient sonic hardware instead of a throwaway. The $50 version comes with the full custom-printed circuit board for the track listing, but you can&#8217;t pocket it, which means you have exactly $25 and one custom Theremin less in your pocket.</p>

<p>Hey &#8211; that&#8217;s a great idea, come to think of it.</p>
<p>Justifying the musical object can sometimes get ridiculous, but so long as there are genuinely creative ideas that fit the music, I think music may have a more interesting future in the post-industry world than it did before.</p>

<p><strong>Updated &#8211; previous applications of this idea:</strong> I&#8217;m typing quickly before I head to lunch, and I commit the major sin of not mentioning our friend Tristan Perich&#8217;s infamous 2005 release 1-bit Music. Whereas Moldover is turning the packaging into an instrument and inserting a traditional CD, Tristan made the entire jewel box the playback mechanism &#8211; the album is embedded in the circuitry, and you listen to it directly. </p>

<p>Hope you enjoy it! It is basically a concertino accordion (famous from Tango music) I got on eBay and refurbished one side of it into a monome clone. It runs on an Arduino Mega microcontroller and connects to a Maxmsp patch on my computer via USB. For various reasons it was not possible to use the excellent arduinome programming, so I had to do the programming from scratch myself. But the best part was adding a pressure sensor to the mix, so that I can use the air pumping action of the accordion to control various parameters. In the video it is the direction of the sample playback (in addition to volume) to give a kind of tape loop scratching effect. Highly entertaining to play, and also visually the bellows look like an audio wave being pulled and pushed. Electronic tango?</p></blockquote>
<p>I was curious specifically about the reeds, and got this follow-up answer:</p>
<blockquote><p>Yes, one side still has accordion reeds though I do not use them in the tune on the video. But you can hear them briefly during the end credits. <p>For the record, the concertina and its South American breed, the bandoneon, are free-reed instruments, just like the accordion. Technically, a concertina is not an accordion, though it can use accordion reeds. And I&#8217;m going to stop there, because I just don&#8217;t know a whole lot beyond that, though I will note that a major research institute happens to be housed at the university where I&#8217;ve done all my graduate work and am now finishing my doctorate.</p>

After all, the instrument itself looks impossibly futuristic. Surely this wasn&#8217;t really designed in 1979. Surely the close up thigh shots of the backup singer girls in the back are tongue-in-cheek parody.</p>
<p>Your friends will believe you. Of course, you&#8217;ll be lying.<span id="more-6644"></span></p>
<p>It did indeed come from tomorrow &#8211; and speaking from tomorrow, I&#8217;d like my instrument back. The MIDI harmonica has sophisticated breath control, a compact form factor, clever controls for adjusting pitch, and &#8212; well, you know, all the goodness of the harmonica but with an easier pitch layout to figure out. From comments, we see that it does go well with our futuristic instruments, meaning you don&#8217;t have to get retro-sounding synths &#8211; you could get something more 2009-appropriate.</p>

<p>Oh yeah &#8211; and this all looks strikingly similar to the (less sophisticated) iPhone apps from Smule, <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/22/interview-smules-ge-wang-on-iphone-apps-ocarinas-and-democratizing-music-tech/">featured in today&#8217;s interview</a>.</p>
<p>All I know is, I desperately want one. And you might even be able to build one &#8212; the microcontroller inside, a Moto 68705, is the equivalent of what you can get very cheaply now. </p>
<p>Who were these forward-looking folk? <a href="http://www.bassharp.com/m2000.htm">According to Wim Dijkgraaf&#8217;s history of the instrument</a>, you can thank Swiss harmonica player Walter Muller (&#8221;Walt Miller&#8221;), Ronald Schlimmer of SM Elektronik (that name should be familiar &#8211; think a lot of the sensors used in music projects now), and the good folks of Acorn Computers for assembly, who in turn had their own ahead-of-its-time products like the BBC Micro and the self-named Acorn. (The Acorn drove the original version of the Sibelius notation product now owned by Digidesign/Avid. Sibelius engineers swore they never got the performance out of Windows and Mac OS that they once had on the Acorn.)</p>

<p>Electronics and code and whatnot are great fun, but a lot of people want to know, how can they add actual, physical motion to a project? I&#8217;ve rounded up the last few odds and ends from the London Music Hackday organized in the offices of <em>The Guardian</em>, and came across Alistair MacDonald and Mr. Duck&#8217;s <a href="http://musichackday.org/index.php?page=Percussion+Machine">Percussion Machine</a>, which uses <a href="http://arduino.cc">Arduino</a> with servos to strike beer bottles.</p>

<p>Of course, I&#8217;ve heard from at least a couple of people that for this audience, you&#8217;re not entirely ready to do all your work in the cloud. APIs. Yawn &#8211; the computer musician audience still is happiest with as much CPU power as they can muster, live sound making in native code on a local machine, and, you know &#8211; rocking out. But that to me is a bit interesting in itself.</p>
<p>Also from the hackday:<span id="more-6500"></span></p>
<p>While the Arduino is ideal for hard projects, software projects turn to the fuzzy textile-friendly <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardLilyPad">Arduino LilyPad</a>. (Side note: the LilyPad turns out not quite the perfect tool for all occasions, and a discussion of all soft electronics may be what&#8217;s next. But it is a good starting point.)</p>
<p>Rain Ashford used the LilyPad to make an interactive felt cat named <a href="http://musichackday.org/index.php?page=TwinkleStarduino">TwinkleStarduino</a>. Just don&#8217;t cross the streams &#8211; er, threads: &#8220;Yep &#8211; all the components are connected by conductive thread &#8211; none of these must touch each other or you&#8217;ll get a short circuit &#8211; which is a challenge in itself :-)&#8221;</p>

<p>Inside a computer, digital music is entirely unseen. But translate it into the tangible world, and it can be anything you imagine &#8211; not limited by acoustic reality or practicality, music can become three-dimensional sculpture.</p>
<p>For artist Christopher Bauder and composer Robert Henke, ATOM&#8217;s light and sound sculpture found a three-dimensional matrix of balloons as its medium. Flashing in hypnotic patterns and moving into different configurations, accompanied by live laptop music from Henke (aka Monolake), music and visuals become an inseparable fusion. </p>
<p>ATOM received its North American premiere at Montreal&#8217;s MUTEK in May. That turned out to be perfect programming, as it placed ATOM in a week that featured complementary work from artists Artificiel. Henke says some of his matrix manipulations &#8211; and even the specific Max/MSP patches from ATOM &#8211; came from collaboration with Artificiel and their light bulbs. For their part, at MUTEK they unveiled a new audiovisual etude called POWEr Play involving a live-sampled Tesla Coil. The science fair ethos of ATOM and POWEr Play could have been gimmicky or overly fixated on spectacle, but in these pieces, it was anything but. Both works contemplated their subject matter so thoughtfully that balloons and electrical coils seemed perfectly natural media for the audiovisual imagination, and audiences were left marveling at phenomena in a way too rare in 2009.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth downloading the video above and really getting to soak up some of this piece when you have time. I also have an audio interview of a conversation with Robert and Christopher immediately following one of the performances.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll hear Christopher&#8217;s voice first, followed by the unmistakable percussive enthusiasm of Robert. For me, the best part of the interview was hearing them discuss whether you should notice some of the unintentional randomness of drifting balloons or technical hiccups, and how they structured the work formally with a palette of possible balloon patterns.</p>
