<p>Roger Linn, he of the MPC and AdrenaLinn and Linnstrument, sends us his friendly walk-through video showing you how to get started actually using the upcoming Linn/Dave Smith Tempest analog drum machine. We&#8217;re awaiting details on when this unit is actually shipping; I&#8217;ll update this post once we hear.</p>
<p>What you get instead, though, is nearly twenty minutes of Roger walking you through every single function &#8211; this is as much a video manual as it is a &#8220;quick start.&#8221; It&#8217;s nice to see some clever workflow features in action, and you get some very in-depth looks at how the Tempest operates. This is documentation, not marketing, in a good way.</p>
<p>Incidentally, lest you think the Tempest is late &#8212; or, at least in terms of its last known shipping projection &#8212; Dave and Roger technically have until the Autumn Equinox, which in 2011 falls on September 23 inclusive, in order to ship in summer 2011. I&#8217;d go further to say that they have until the end of the date of the equinox Pacific time, which gives them a few additional hours beyond even the majority of their customer base. They&#8217;re currently listing the Tempest as due in &#8220;late summer 2011,&#8221; but unless they mean &#8220;late&#8221; as in early fall, they have until the 24th of September before they become seasonally incompatible. </p>
<p>I believe it&#8217;s briefly on the cusp of the Autumn Equinox on which MIDI clocks start running backwards, or vocoders talk without carrier signals, or something. </p>

<p><strong>A monome-like grid controller built for Live, shipping in November for $199 &#8211; and I&#8217;ve got a first hands-on look with the hardware.</strong></p>
<p>The feature that makes Ableton Live Ableton Live has always been its Session View, an array of Lego-like blocks of music triggering samples and patterns. In the grand tradition of the MPC, mapping hardware controls that make music non-linear has been a major theme of computer music, leading to the monome and the Tenori-On. Usually, consumer gear has only combined these with traditional drum pads, knobs, or faders.</p>
<p>Enter the Novation Launchpad. It&#8217;s $199. It&#8217;s a grid controller and nothing else, with a set of on/off buttons in an 8&#215;8 array, plus additional shortcut buttons around the sides for switching modes. It&#8217;s set up out of the box to integrate with Ableton Live, but it also acts as a generic MIDI controller. It&#8217;s bus powered, really lightweight, and compact. Even following Akai&#8217;s earlier APC40 this year, there&#8217;s something special about the Launchpad: its radical simplicity, and the fact that it is this compact and cheap and plugs in via USB without power, makes this a potential no-brainer for any Live user with a laptop. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve just gotten one of the first Launchpads to arrive (unit &#8220;#16&#8243; on the back), so I&#8217;ve been playing around with it and can provide some initial impressions and details. I&#8217;ve also gotten input from Ableton&#8217;s Dave Hill as well as Novation, and I expect to fill in more soon.<br />

<p><strong>monoming the sincerest form of flattery?</strong> Of course, one design more than any other championed the radical idea of a minimal grid of buttons &#8212; and nothing else. That design statement was the partially open-source, fully-homegrown <a href="http://monome.org/">monome</a>. I&#8217;m sure as a result Novation will be accused of ripping off the monome design. I think the opposite: I think the availability of the Launchpad is a huge victory for monome, and an enormous compliment. More than any other design &#8211; including the APC40 &#8211; the Launchpad really says that an affordable, mass-market device can take on the monome&#8217;s radical form. It says grids could become ubiquitous. It&#8217;s an enormous validation of what the monome project has done. Furthermore, I think the monome community can continue to reinvent what to do with grids, with software and interaction. There are also many things the monome is &#8211; locally produced, sustainably produced, running with open source software, fully community-supported, available in kit form, working with OpenSoundControl, built in a premium form factor &#8211; that the Launchpad is not. </p>
<p><strong>[edited for clarification]</strong> I think the Launchpad is unlikely to dissuade a person who wants a monome from getting a monome. But what&#8217;s significant here is that the design of musical instruments and controllers can adopt new forms. The monome was seen as radical when introduced. It seemed as though the music tech industry wouldn&#8217;t produce anything without slapping on some arbitrary knobs somewhere. The Launchpad really does follow the monome&#8217;s design cue, and maps control in Live in some new ways. That gives me hope that other designs could likewise tread in new direction, both from independent and larger designers.</p>
<p><strong>Onto the details&#8230;</strong> The big picture aside, here&#8217;s a first look at how the operation of the Launchpad works. I&#8217;ll have a short video a little later on today.<span id="more-7726"></span></p>

<h3>Control Modes</h3>
<p>The Launchpad has a series of modes that act allow the single 8&#215;8 grid to perform multiple duties. Different modes and shortcuts bring up different visual feedback (by lighting up the buttons) and allow you to control different parameters.</p>
<p><strong>Session mode</strong></p>
<p>In Session mode, the Launchpad does exactly what Akai&#8217;s APC40 does. You can trigger clips and view clip state (playing, recording, ready, empty) by color (green, red, amber, and off). You can trigger scenes. You also get the red rectangle that highlights which bank of clips is active.</p>
<p>Unlike the APC40, though, the Launchpad is cheaper, smaller, thinner, lighter, and bus-powered. You can pick it up like a tablet, or squeeze it into a small club space. You can also easily chain multiple Launchpads together (or Launchpads and APC40s), so long as you have enough ports or a USB hub.</p>
<p>Multiple units can simultaneously access integrated control surface functions and clip triggering in Session View. So, for instance, you could have two Launchpads controlling clips, or one controlling the mixer and one controlling clips, or&#8230; you get the idea.</p>
<p><strong>Mixer mode + parameter pages</strong></p>
<p>Hit &#8220;mixer,&#8221; and you see an overview of all your tracks, eight at a time. (You can navigate through your set using the &#8220;page&#8221; buttons.) </p>
<p>Each row has a different function:</p>
<ul>
<li>Volume</li>
<li>Pan</li>
<li>Sends A + B</li>
<li>Stop clips</li>
<li>Track on</li>
<li>Solo</li>
<li>Arm</li>
</ul>
<p>The &#8220;stop&#8221; row allows you to either stop an individual track or stop all clips by hitting the &#8220;stop&#8221; button itself on the right. Solo, arm, and track enable are self-explanatory. </p>
<p>Where things get a bit cooler is if you press the &#8220;snd A,&#8221; &#8220;snd B,&#8221; &#8220;pan,&#8221; and &#8220;vol&#8221; controls. These allow you to use each column to set parameters. So, for instance, if you want to adjust the send level on your second track, you&#8217;d hit &#8220;mixer,&#8221; then &#8220;snd A,&#8221; then use the second column to adjust the send up or down. You can fake a &#8220;fade&#8221; by dragging your finger up or down the column. Now, this doesn&#8217;t give you the continuous control a knob or fader would; there&#8217;s no interpolation between values. On the other hand, if you&#8217;re <em>trying</em> to create stepped, rhythmic changes, that could make the Launchpad (or any grid controller, including the monome) more interesting.</p>

<p><strong>User mode</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;User modes&#8221; provide open access to the pads for use as MIDI inputs. By default, &#8220;user 1&#8243; sends MIDI note messages, and &#8220;user 2&#8243; sends control change values.</p>
<p>In the video, you&#8217;ll see these modes used for some crazy things, like programming in a sequence and having it continue to light up as you add other layers. In my test &#8211; keeping in mind launch date is still over a month away &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t replicate any of these behaviors. Some of this interaction may require the upcoming Max for Live; I&#8217;m awaiting confirmation on details.</p>
<p>In the meantime, you can at least use the Launchpad as a MIDI input in Live or any other software. </p>
<p><strong>Use with other software</strong></p>
<p>Every single button on the Launchpad sends MIDI; I opened a MIDI Monitor session on my MacBook while testing it. There&#8217;s not a single menu key that doesn&#8217;t send a message. Also interesting: each sends both an on and an off value, which makes it more useful as a button. </p>
<p>It should also be possible, as with the APC40, to use MIDI to light up the Launchpad, complete with color and limited dim levels. I&#8217;m assuming the mappings may even be identical to the APC40. I don&#8217;t know yet how to do this, however.</p>
<p>Another big selling point for Novation, of course, is Automap support. Along the top, there are alternative labels for the buttons: learn, view, page, instrument, fx, user, and mixer. These will work with Automap and Automap Pro, in case you want to use another host or map to third-party instruments and effects. I didn&#8217;t get a chance to test this functionality yet, however.</p>

<h3>Physical form factor</h3>
<p>The Launchpad feels really good. It&#8217;s thin, it&#8217;s light, it&#8217;s easy to toss in a backpack (as I did today), and yet the plastic case feels very solid. The pads feel good, though I find the throw a little long, making them rock slightly if you don&#8217;t hit them dead-center. Angled pads indicate the center, and four pads around them have slight nubs on the surface for additional tactile feedback.</p>
<p>Rubber strips underneath the unit help grip surfaces. </p>
<p>One possibly unfortunate decision was to put the USB port on the side rather than the top, which means you can&#8217;t easily put two Launchpads side by side. </p>
<h3>Software</h3>
<p>The Launchpad ships with a copy of Ableton Live Launchpad edition (aka Live Lite), version 8.0.6. On both my Mac and Windows boxes, I simply installed that version and it automatically found my full Live license. I expect that the 8.0.6 build will get pushed to everyone else in time for launch.</p>
<p>You select the Launchpad as other control surfaces, by looking for &#8220;Launchpad&#8221; in the Control Surface menu. This presumably means that, like the APC40, a software handshake is used to enable the red clip selection box. I&#8217;d still like to see a universal solution from Ableton, one resizable to other controllers. Why not plug in a 4&#215;4 drum pad and bank through clips in a 4&#215;4 rectangle instead of an 8&#215;8 one? The red rectangle is also limited in that it&#8217;s tough to see which <em>tracks</em> are selected. (It&#8217;s also kind of tough to see, period.) That&#8217;s really become an Ableton complaint, though. I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll be working on Max for Live and Live API solutions for heads-up displays that replace all of this soon.</p>

<div class="imgcaption">In the box: a very thin but clear getting started guide, plus a disc with Live Lite and USB drivers. Sadly, without drivers, this doesn&#8217;t work, so as with other Novation hardware, you&#8217;re out of luck on Linux. That&#8217;s too bad &#8211; Live may not run on Linux, but I like hardware that does multiple duties.</div>
<h3>Questions and Initial Impressions</h3>
<p>I like the Launchpad a whole lot. Sure, it doesn&#8217;t have knobs or faders &#8211; but you could throw the Launchpad into your backpack alongside a KORG nanoKONTROL, using the Korg for your fader and knob tasks while the Launchpad launches clips, triggers drum pads, and gets used for live sequencing and playing instruments.</p>
<p>I am a little disappointed that there doesn&#8217;t seem to be a way to control Devices. I&#8217;d like to be able to take the User Mode and use my eight columns to control the eight macro knobs on any active Device. Sure, you only get 8 values of resolution, but you could set up a Device so that those eight values were musically interesting. I&#8217;m investigating whether this is possible; if not, I may look into hacking a solution.</p>
<p>I still think there&#8217;s a big place for open tools. The Launchpad is already touting forthcoming use with Max for Live, but that&#8217;s only because it <em>sends MIDI messages</em> &#8211; and anything else that can send MIDI (or OSC, via work from the Live community to use it) will do the same. I think those of us working on open interaction, though, can find ways of building stuff that works in open tools and closed tools (Java, Pd, and the like are open, Max is not), and open and closed hardware (monome, Livid&#8217;s Ohm on the open side, things like the cheap-and-light Launchpad on the proprietary side). Having lots of grids could be a good thing. If everyone has the same thing, the pressure is on to make your performance different from everyone else&#8217;s.</p>
<p>But the bottom line is, I think this is going to be a huge hit with the Live user base. And even more than the APC40, I think it&#8217;s cheap, an easy impulse-buy, extremely compact, and complements other hardware. It also looks like it&#8217;ll be a terrific live visual controller for people who moonlight between music and visual sets.</p>
<p>Since I do have this Launchpad here well over a month prior to launch, and some folks at Ableton and Novation ready to share, if you&#8217;ve got questions or concerns, <em>please don&#8217;t be shy</em>.</p>

<p>I&#8217;d be remiss if I didn&#8217;t note another significant DAW release: DP7 is shipping this week. The Mac-only Digital Performer still has a loyal following, especially among the scoring crowd, some of whom have stuck with DP since the Performer days &#8211; one of the Mac&#8217;s first sequencers. I have to say, this particular update seems to focus more on bundled effects than core functionality &#8211; and, in fairness, because it&#8217;s tough to change core features without upsetting the stuff that keeps your users loyal, this isn&#8217;t uncommon. But DP has uncommonly rich support for being a Pro Tools HD front end, it&#8217;s Mac-savvy and Snow Leopard compatible, and given its popularity in scoring, a little touch like the Marker Counter could be huge news for its major following.</p>
<p>Full disclosure: I haven&#8217;t found much reason to touch DP lately, with plenty of other tools to keep my attention, so if there is a loyal DP user who would like to send in their dispatch, I&#8217;d love to run it on CDM.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I&#8217;ll keep this compact to give you a birds-eye view. First, the effects stuff:<span id="more-7480"></span><br />

<ul>
<li><strong>Stompboxes:</strong> For the first time, you get a suite of guitar pedal effects, including emulations of Ibanez, BOSS, RXT, and Electro-Harmonix.</li>
<li><strong>Modeled amps:</strong> Simulations of the Fender Bassman, Marshall JTM45, and Marshall JCM800. So, sure, other suites offer more options &#8211; but these are three top picks.</li>
<li><strong>Physically-modeled guitar miking:</strong> The Live Room | G simulates a speaker cabinet and mic placement. Unlike the Logic 9 take on the same idea, you get a built-in EQ and four channels &#8211; but also unlike Logic, you get close / near / far rather rather free-form mic placement. That&#8217;s too bad, given the clever top-down view, though I suspect the default placements are typically all you need.</li>
<li><strong>Smarter strips:</strong> Access channel strips from a floating window, and see EQ <em>and</em> dynamics in-line on the mixing board. (Usually you get EQ, but not dynamics.) Plus, finally &#8211; unlike most other programs &#8211; your virtual rack of synths appears right on the mixing board. Mixer controls are also available in any edit window, not just the usual arrangement view.</li>
<li><strong>Better counters:</strong> A Large Counter resizes the counter to an arbitrary size &#8211; ideal for when you&#8217;ve rented an orchestra and are projecting counts (literally). And a Marker Counter displays markers and jumps to specific spots, which could be fantastic for backing tracks, recording, and scoring. It&#8217;s a simple thing &#8211; obvious, really &#8211; and yet I haven&#8217;t seen it done before.</li>
<li><strong>Real-time crossfades</strong> promise to speed editing.</li>
<li><strong>Automation by range</strong>.</li>
</ul>

<p>There are also various notation improvements, including lead sheet generation &#8211; though I still think it&#8217;s touch to beat a dedicated scoring tool, or the recent inclusion of Sibelius in Pro Tools. More interesting, you get full support for running Pro Tools 8 on the back end, which is ideal for people who prefer DP (and that Marker Counter) as their front end. And there are also tweaks under the hood, including Wave64 support for massive broadcast files, side-chaining AU plug-ins, and a new sample rate conversion engine.</p>
<p>Guitar effects in this tool have to go up against Apple&#8217;s Logic Studio. I&#8217;d have to generally give the edge there to Apple, though, because the range of tools remains wider, and Apple also includes MainStage for rigging their effects into a performance-ready setup.</p>
<p>Guitar effects are nice, but I think enhancing the Counter, cleverly integrating some of the mixing controls, and making cross-fade editing faster could actually be more important. If you&#8217;re a DP user, do let us know what you think of the update.</p>

<p><em>The iPhone has become an almost absurdly-popular platform for music apps this year, even given more capable, more plentiful PCs. But to those who don&#8217;t yet &#8220;get&#8221; the appeal, talk to a mobile music addict: having the ability to be creatively musically in corners of time that would otherwise go unused, like a cramped bus ride, can be a beautiful thing. (Now, you start talking about taking away my PC/Mac experience, and I will start screaming in agony &#8211; but that&#8217;s a topic for a separate post.) The question is, what form should that app take? Today, I&#8217;ve got an iPhone round-up going as I clear out my news inbox, but that thread lies beneath all the stories&#8230;</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;m working on putting together a collection of truly productive, non-gimmicky/non-toy music apps now that the platform is maturing. But two apps released this week I think deserve special mention, and mention together &#8211; partly because of the different angle they take.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re both essentially handheld grooveboxes. They&#8217;re both relatively powerful, bringing desktop-style production to the platform. They&#8217;re both good options, and at this price, you might go buy both. But as I go off to test these two apps, I&#8217;m already struck by the contrast between the two. </p>
<p>One is the kind of app that we&#8217;re seeing a whole lot of on the iPhone, just as we once saw it in me-too apps on desktop computers. It assumes that the way to reach more people is to give them a whole bunch of canned loops that already sound like the styles they might want to play, and assume they&#8217;ll be pretty limited in their ability to do much with those loops.</p>
<p>The other of the two apps eschews the obligatory audio loops for real synthesis, and strips out the usual &#8220;let&#8217;s try to look like hardware&#8221; interface for something a lot more minimal and (I think) touch device friendly. That&#8217;s a design lesson that might well be applied beyond the iPhone, too. </p>

<p>First, consider the looped audio approach.<span id="more-6971"></span></p>
<p>From IK Multimedia, GrooveMaker is a real-time app for manipulating audio loops. Interestingly, IK brought it over from the Mac/PC software. There are some powerful features, real-time control over audio, WiFi upload to your computer. It&#8217;s all well and good, so far.</p>
<p>The problem is that GrooveMaker is yet another app that assumes the only way people can have fun is to start with a bunch of canned loops and genres. GrooveMaker comes with hundreds of loops in house, hip-hop, and club styles. But that&#8217;s it &#8211; there&#8217;s no way to really easily start a track from scratch. (<strong>Update:</strong> Note that I should say you can at least <em>sequence</em> from scratch, but only with the stock content &#8211; which would have made GrooveMaker bigger news on this platform were it not for the release of iDrum and BeatMaker first.)</p>
<p>Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong. I&#8217;m not anti-sample. It&#8217;s not my own working style because it just doesn&#8217;t inspire me, but that&#8217;s a personal feeling, and not one I&#8217;d impose on anyone else. In fact, some of my best friends (ahem) are capable of doing things with sampled loops that blow my mind. The problem I have is with lowest-common-denominator thinking. In fact, I think synthesized tracks, tracks that give you real control over the sound, are often <em>more</em> fun for beginners.</p>
<p>Take, for instance, Smule. As founder Ge Wang discussed with CDM, their <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/22/interview-smules-ge-wang-on-iphone-apps-ocarinas-and-democratizing-music-tech/">Ocarina and Leaf Trombone app</a> are aimed really at non-musicians. But because these instruments use synthesized sound, people are free to really play with them and make whatever noise with them they like, rather than getting stuck with canned sounds to &#8220;remix.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, perhaps a future version of GrooveMaker will make it easier to bring in other audio. Even then, it&#8217;ll have a lot of catching up to do with Intua&#8217;s far more powerful <a href="http://intua.net/products.html">BeatMaker</a> having been on the market for some time and offering features like integration with <a href="http://noise.io/">noise.io&#8217;s soft synth</a>. But let&#8217;s talk for a moment about the flexibility of synthesis.</p>

<h3>More Funner, with Synths?</h3>
<p>bleep!BOX takes a different approach. Now, there have already been some 808 and 909 emulations on the iPhone. But you really have to see this instrument in action. Creator David Wallin has done some interesting work to make lots of sound parameters accessible.</p>
<p>David writes us:</p>
<blockquote><p>I wanted to drop you a line to let you know that my iPhone groove box app is finally approved and live in the app store. It features 10 drum/synth parts (808 / 909 emulations of snares, hihats, etc and 4x 2-Oscillator analog synth parts). All sounds are generated realtime and are highly tweakable &#8211; no samples are used.
</p></blockquote>
<p>Compare the results: with the canned loop, you get something that sounds good right away &#8211; though it also sound predictable. It then actually requires a fair amount of effort to make that sound your own, if you succeed at all.</p>
<p>Using synthesized sound, on the other hand, you initially get, well, nothing at all. But you can very quickly get to something you&#8217;ve created yourself, even if your skill level isn&#8217;t all that high.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an oversimplification, of course, but I think it&#8217;s at least born out in the design philosophies here; bleep!BOX allows the user to be more constructive than passive. (Audio manipulation techniques are capable of some tricks all their own &#8211; especially when you get into time manipulation and granular resynthesis. But that&#8217;s just the means to the end. There&#8217;s a difference between synthesizing music and consuming &#8211; or even passively remixing &#8211; music.)</p>
<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to spending some time with bleep!BOX  as a sketchpad for beats. I&#8217;ll be interested to see how it might evolve to allow easier integration with desktop music workflows. </p>
<p>But notice what you can do with synthesized sounds &#8211; you can actually <em>play</em>. I think this is part of what made the Korg DS-10 such a smash hit on the Nintendo DS, even given the DS&#8217; extremely constrained audio fidelity. (The iPhone &#8211; and, incidentally, Sony&#8217;s PSP &#8211; fare much better.)</p>
<p>Whether you&#8217;re a beginner or advanced user, &#8220;play&#8221; and expression are really what it&#8217;s about. A kazoo, for instance, doesn&#8217;t have canned sounds. It doesn&#8217;t come with presets. It can, frankly, embarrass you. But it&#8217;s fun to play, because you can feel a certain amount of freedom with it.</p>
<p>Ironically, I think it actually requires a fairly advanced user to have that kind of freedom with pre-canned loops. Aiming at a &#8220;lowest common denominator&#8221; is too often disparaged, when it can really mean aiming at a large public.</p>
<p>But maybe the reason &#8220;lowest common denominator&#8221; gets a bad name is that more advanced tools are often more fun. I&#8217;d love to see more work done on synthesized sound that&#8217;s really fun to play with.</p>

<p>One of my complaints when I looked at the first Lemur touchscreen was that it felt like it had in a way separated display, computer, and interface. A computer with multi-touch? Now we&#8217;re talking. Lots of questions here, though: how would a typical PC support the multi-touch interface? How much would it cost? What&#8217;s this new prototype device &#8212; is it, as the Dexter was, basically just another Lemur with the addition of new control templates?</p>
<p>Time will tell. We&#8217;ll be watching. But this is some of the best multi-touch news in a long time.</p>

<p>The perfect computer DJ controller remains elusive. Serious turntablist DJs, of course, will want decks. But what if you&#8217;re scratching homebrew Reaktor instruments, or jogging through video for a VJ set (which, sorry, isn&#8217;t really subtle enough to require a full deck), or just adding scratch to a laptop set? </p>

<p>Here&#8217;s what it looks like on paper (or, erm, website pixels anyway):</p>
<ol><LI>Jog wheel &#8220;constructed with a high-resolution pulse sensor; touch sensor and acrylic platter mechanism&#8221;. Have to actually try that out to know what that feels like. Jog wheels have built-in &#8220;sensor LED.&#8221;</li>

<p><LI>USB MIDI connection, bus-powered</li>
<p><LI>90 assignable parameters</li>

<p>The controller layout is a little unusual in that there&#8217;s a loop/sampler section at top left and generic &#8220;effects&#8221; controls at upper right. I&#8217;m guessing some folks will like that, and others won&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Pricing, availability &#8212; no official word. Hopefully we&#8217;ll hear more at NAMM.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MidAir37-main.html">M-Audio MidAir 37</a> is a 37-key version of the previous, wireless 25-key model. That leaves room for extra controllers (9 faders, to be exact) and makes a more playable instrument. US$299, and runs 20 hours on AA batteries. The only problem: it&#8217;s not a strap-on, so other than reducing some cables or accommodating a tricky stage setup, you might be better off going with M-Audio&#8217;s higher-grade, cheaper wired keyboards instead.</p>
<p>More interesting is the new standalone <a href="http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MidAir-main.html">MidAir adapter</a>. At US$149, it turns any instrument with MIDI into a wireless device. Now we&#8217;re talking; at that price, you can buy a couple and start turning everything in your studio into a wireless unit. M-Audio has actually thought through how the adapter will work, with a very compact clip-on unit, and coiled cables (so you don&#8217;t get tangled). </p>

<p>Keytars are the first logical application here, and the ability to make a vintage, battery-powered keytar into a wireless device, you have to admit, has some geek-chic appeal. But why stop there? Most of the compact keyboards in my studio are now battery-powered, like the tiny Novation Xiosynth that just arrived. I could even see this used on DIY gear. The <a href="http://www.ladyada.net/make/midisense/">MIDIsense</a> board, for instance, or (if you add MIDI ports) <a href="http://arduino.cc">Arduino</a> both run happily on a 9V battery. Plug in the sensors of your choice, and your new gyroscope &#8211; accelerometer &#8211; touch sensor &#8211; light sensor &#8211; blinkie thing can be set free, wirelessly &#8212; all without having to tune the wireless function yourself.</p>
<p>A number of you asked what happened to the competing <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/06/06/wireless-midi-interface-cmes-widi-x8-with-80m-range/">WIDI line</a> from CME. The answer is, simply, I don&#8217;t know; I haven&#8217;t seen a shipping version here in the US yet, and those of you who have ordered one haven&#8217;t seen it yet. I do notice that the WIDI standalone device looks a little clunkier. If any of you have ordered one and actually got it, let us know. (I also notice the CME looks a little clunkier than the new MidAir.) Until CME can actually ship their device, the M-Audio wins by forfeit.</p>
