<p>The grid is in. While the <a href="http://monome.org">monome</a> remains the standards bearer for hardware with grids of buttons on it, arrays of buttons are suddenly everywhere, in the commercial Akai APC40 and Novation Launchpad, and, from Livid Instruments, the Ohm64 and now the Block. I think it&#8217;s a real compliment to the monome&#8217;s creators &#8211; and the community that has authored ingenious open software for the monome &#8211; that there is this excitement around the design.</p>
<p>The latest entry is Livid&#8217;s Block, a compact, aluminum-and-wood controller that&#8217;s easy to carry and which weighs less than 3 pounds. It&#8217;s not a monome &#8211; it eschews the monome&#8217;s stringent minimalist design aesthetic and adds knobs on top, faders on the side. That layout has made the M-Audio Trigger Finger a blockbuster hit, so I think it could attract people who want more than just buttons. (That&#8217;s why choice is generally a good thing.) But just as importantly, the Block takes cues from the monome beyond the skin-deep. As with the Ohm64, Livid is working to open-source both the guts of the hardware and the software on the computer. The instruments are made by hand using sustainable materials and finishes, manufactured in Texas in their own shop rather than the lowest bidder overseas. The hardware itself encourages hacks and customization. These are principles championed by the monome&#8217;s Brian Crabtree and Kelli Cain, and they&#8217;re badly in need of some company. Livid, like those monome creators, is a handful of individuals rather then a big company, but they give us new hardware that embodies sustainability, openness, and local production &#8211; and that makes the monome and its principles stronger. (Livid has been crafting performance hardware and Max patches for many years.) And while this bus-powered USB MIDI device doesn&#8217;t yet support (OSC) OpenSoundControl, that could come &#8211; without sacrificing conventional MIDI connections to outboard gear when you don&#8217;t have the computer connected. (Clarification: as with the Ohm64, OSC support is not yet available but should be possible. Stay tuned.)</p>

<p>I&#8217;m interested in more open software, so I&#8217;m working on making an editor in Java and would love to hear what else people might want. (SuperCollider looper? Pd algorithmic grid controller? Processing library?) These I hope to make work both with the Livid hardware&#8217;s added faders and knobs, and the monome&#8217;s more minimal design. Of course, OSC will be terrific for computer applications if that comes to pass, but I love the idea of gear that can also talk to MIDI hardware.</p>
<p>I really like Novation&#8217;s Launchpad, but for a little more money, you get a beautiful case, additional controls, and added flexibility, all in gear handcrafted by the maker and with an open approach to hardware and software. Without getting into a debate over the merits one way or another, consider this: <em>you can choose</em>. We didn&#8217;t use to have these kinds of choices in music hardware. The fact that we do now &#8211; not only the ability to choose the nameplate, but the very philosophy behind the device&#8217;s manufacture &#8211; I think can benefit everyone, users and manufacturers alike. It opens up the entire music tech industry to new ideas and new variety.</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s &#8220;the most revolutionary new musical instrument of the last 60 years,&#8221; but let&#8217;s be clear on one thing: the <a href="http://www.eigenlabs.com/alpha/">Eigenharp Alpha</a> is utterly, beautifully insane. It combines breath and finger input in a bassoon form factor, but with quite a lot more physical control, a computer connection, and no internal sound source of its own. The breath input comes from a crooked tube as on a bassoon, with finger input in a touch strip, a fretted, light-up keyboard, and keys that have their own various forms of expression. Launched yesterday in London, the Eingenharp is getting a lot of attention. (And yes, some of you spotted signs of its launch all the way back in June, to which I say &#8211; I&#8217;m sorry I&#8217;m so late to the party.) </p>

<p>I hope to speak to the creators soon. Already, I see some indications that there are equal parts genius and madness here. The controller itself, even in the bizarre bassoon form factor, has an extraordinary amount of control, with high-resolution keys, percussion keys, elaborate control arrangements that can adjust tone or record samples, and extremely precise breath and touch. At £3,950, many computer musicians accused of &#8220;knob twiddling&#8221; by the creators probably won&#8217;t be able to afford the top-of-the-line model, but I do believe an instrument like this can easily, fairly cost this much, it&#8217;s a cost reasonable for musical instruments &#8211; and there is a £349 &#8220;Pico&#8221; edition for mortals.</p>
<p><del datetime="2009-10-09T18:57:43+00:00">There&#8217;s some madness, too, however. For the &#8220;instrument of the future,&#8221; the creators appear to have chosen MIDI, via USB, in place of a modern control protocol. Then, they plug the instrument into proprietary Mac software. (A Windows version is expected early next year.)</del> There are software models of a Cello, a Clarinet, and a Synth, but there are also gigs of samples oddly loaded into SoundFont format. Given the futuristic ambitions and the sky-high price, closed software and antiquated I/O seem puzzling to me. I&#8217;m also skeptical of the approach here of piling on as many controllers as possible.</p>
<p><strong>CORRECTION &#8211; CORRECTION!</strong> Yes, indeed &#8211; proprietary software and the limitations of MIDI <em>wouldn&#8217;t</em> make any sense &#8211; and apparently the creators agree. So the software will be open sourced, as will their custom-designed protocol. I&#8217;ve got <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/10/09/eigenharp-details-midi-high-res-protocol-and-open-source-plans-for-the-space-bassoon/">all the details</a> &#8211; required reading for anyone working on expressive instruments.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t get me wrong. I think this fascinatingly bizarre instrument is worth exploring. The hardware design looks exceptionally luxurious, and there is some genuine design innovation in the controller the likes of which we&#8217;ve never seen in an instrument beyond a prototype or two.</p>
<p>Oh, and yes, I already want the Pico &#8211; and I think the Pico&#8217;s fewer controls may actually make more sense.</p>

<li>Two strip controllers, one on each side.</li>

<li>11-bit resolution (2048 values) in the keys and strip controllers, 12-bit resolution (4098 values) for breath.</li>
<li>Internal audio interface with mic pre, converters, and headphone out &#8211; so you need to carry this and a computer, but not this, a computer, and an audio interface.</li>
<li>A &#8220;Base Station&#8221; with inputs for expression pedals and foot switches, which also contains the USB connection. This connects to a floor spike on which the instrument rests.</li>

<p>To be honest, I&#8217;m quite a lot more interested in the Pico, not because I think cheaper is better, but because I&#8217;m curious whether you can&#8217;t be just as expressive with the more limited set of controls as with the kitchen sink approach of its big brother. After all, 22 keys is roughly the number you&#8217;d find on most reed instruments, including the Bassoon. True, the piano has 88 keys, but it also doesn&#8217;t really have anything else &#8211; and it&#8217;s able to have so many because of its form factor.</p>
<p>In fact, I&#8217;m sorry, but I love the Pico. It looks friendly, it looks portable, it isn&#8217;t terrifying-looking like the Alpha, and it seems it&#8217;d be more at home in a variety of musical venues than the Alpha. Sometimes less is more. Let&#8217;s see if I prove to be correct.</p>
<p>The software, though I hope you could also customize your own software rig using the MIDI input:</p>
<ul>
<li>Modular, allowing the routing of control inputs, sound sources and samples, loopers, and synthesis and effects.</li>
<li>SoundFont oscillator.</li>
<li>Physical models of the clarinet, cello.</li>
<li>AU host for adding your own plug-ins. (And yes, this is where I think you&#8217;ll have the most fun.</li>
<li>A system for triggering events, takes, key, and mapping scale.</li>
<li>An interactive arrangement system for step sequencing.</li>
<li>Oddly, an extensive Steinway D multi-sample. On the other hand, for years we&#8217;ve all have been playing bassoon and other reed samples on the keyboard, and in organ form for centuries, so now the reed instrument gets its revenge.</li>
</ul>

<p>The instrument&#8217;s creator, John Lambert, repeats the maxim heard at <a href="http://www.nime.org/">new instrument design conferences</a>: &#8220;We&#8217;ve got pretty fed up with watching people twiddle knobs on stage.&#8221; Naturally, that means&#8230; turning to the Bassoonist, that sex icon of the orchestra? I&#8217;ll run with it.</p>
<p>One other tidbit from that article:</p>

<p>Yeah, Herbie Hancock, we know it&#8217;s you. (Okay, they are an English company, so maybe it&#8217;s an English celeb, but really the question is whether Herbie is who they mean, or whether he&#8217;s filling out the pre-order as we speak. He&#8217;s like what we would all be like if we had a budget.)</p>

<p>It&#8217;s Richie Hawtin Watch time! The latest: NI teases an upcoming DJ controller by sharing video of Richie playing it in a club. The surprise: it&#8217;s actually what he&#8217;s doing with Maschine that seems most interesting to me. And if you recall the Twitter DJ app that he promised in the spring, it&#8217;s here, ready to use so long as you have Traktor and a Mac. (If you&#8217;re reading, Richie, do let me know if I&#8217;ve gotten my facts straight&#8230;)<span id="more-7715"></span></p>
<p>Native Instruments yesterday pointed me to a video they&#8217;ve posted of Richie Hawtin DJing at Berlin&#8217;s lovely <a href="http://www.saturdayadventureclub.de/">Saturday Adventure Club</a>. The point of this is, of course, to tease an upcoming DJ controller they intend to announce in detail in November. You can already tell a lot from watching the video: it&#8217;s a hardware controller (or two chained together) that focuses on the Traktor working method. That is, there appears to be an emphasis on control of multiple effects, and cue and loop points, and it seems you can control Traktor&#8217;s full four decks. (At least, that&#8217;s what I get from squinting at the video; I could be wrong.) Regular Traktor users may be able to tell more, so &#8230; um, squint away.</p>
<p>To me, actually, it&#8217;s what Richie is doing with Maschine that looks most cool. He&#8217;s using NI&#8217;s drum machine to program in live beats and loop those, and it appears he&#8217;s then using Traktor as a sort of software DJ mixer / DJ source / effects unit. This shouldn&#8217;t be a big deal; in an ideal world, we&#8217;d have lots of DJs getting crazy playing their own beats atop their mixes and really mixing up the stuff they&#8217;re playing. Sadly, too often what you get is people playing tracks straight, which means you could just stay home and drink and dance in your living room. Richie&#8217;s sets do a lot more than that &#8211; and of course, what a lot of us are looking forward to is a rebirth of his original Plastikman stuff on tour, expected <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/09/04/richie-hawtin-talks-performance-brings-back-plastikman-by-survey/">some time in the near future</a>. If you&#8217;re interested in what he&#8217;s doing in his live sets, and his fellow minus mates, let me know and I can find out.</p>
<p>Before anyone complains about his line-up of gear, Richie was involved in the development of all these products, including the Allen &#038; Heath mixer. So I would expect him to use the stuff!</p>
<p>In other news, the <a href="http://m-nus.com/Twitter_DJ/">TwitterDJ</a> app is now freely available, for Twittering tracks live from Traktor. The bad news is, the installation and setup is pretty involved, and it&#8217;s Mac-only. I like the idea &#8211; part of the vision of TwitterDJ is getting DJs reporting tracks they&#8217;re playing, so producers get paid when their music is played. And letting clubgoers discover tracks they&#8217;re hearing is also a great thing. I suppose the advantage of it being on Twitter is that it&#8217;s accessible to people at clubs with cell phones. But you do wonder if a Web-based format wouldn&#8217;t be better, and given that underneath is the cross-platform <a href="http://www.icecast.org/">Icecast</a> streaming server, it seems too bad to me that the app is Mac-only. Building networked apps is a perfect application for platforms like Java and Python. But don&#8217;t get me wrong: it&#8217;s great to see someone who plays out as much as Richie does experimenting, and sharing the tool he built. I&#8217;d like to know if the tool is open enough that other people could take it and adapt the idea to other platforms and servers / communication media.</p>

<p>Can you approach a symphony orchestra as though it&#8217;s an analog synth? That&#8217;s a question composers have asked since the first time they heard electronic sounds. It&#8217;s impossible to hear the 20th-century technology alongside the 19th-century technology without the one reframing your view of the other. Now, it will be tackled by the new album from composer/singer/violinist Owen Pallett, with an interesting cast of characters onboard, plus one imaginary ultra-violent farmer.<span id="more-7683"></span></p>
<p>Pallett, who performs confusingly under the band name best known as a Japanese video game, Final Fantasy, is something really different in the artist scene right now. For years, the &#8220;new music&#8221; or &#8220;art music&#8221; landscape had begun incorporating elements of rock and pop songwriting, but his work seems to find an ease and intimacy that&#8217;s entirely his own. He&#8217;s also evidently a Max/MSP fan &#8211; see the site:</p>

<p>Final Fantasy gets filed clumsily under that catch-all &#8220;indie,&#8221; but the artist&#8217;s work is heavily influenced by contemporary chamber music and classical gestures. I imagine some people may actually find they hate the results, in asymmetrical combinations of ideas and wordy streams of lyrics. To me, though, those quirks can grow on you, carried by utterly gorgeous string writing. &#8220;He Poos Clouds,&#8221; with piano and string quartet, is an imaginative operetta inspired by <em>Dungeons &#038; Dragons</em>. Then there&#8217;s his video single from the beginning of this year, &#8220;Horsefail Feathers,&#8221; seen below. It epitomizes Pallett&#8217;s unusual tastes, mixing quasi-surrealist lyrics, lush, movie musical-style arrangement, and a dose of self-aware awkwardness that could upset everything else but instead becomes charming.</p>

<p>It certainly made me wonder what would come next. At a time when many of us eliminate instrumentalists altogether, the upcoming &#8220;Heartland&#8221; will be 45 minutes of orchestra music, courtesy the Czech Symphony. To me, the relevance to this site is thinking about how to construct music, whether for instruments electronic or acoustic. In today&#8217;s announcement, Pallett says:</p>
<blockquote><p>The album was compositionally modeled upon the principles of electronic music.  The principles of analog synthesis informing symphonic writing,  like an inversion of a Tomita record.  These songs, too, were designed to be as dense with polyphony as the Final Fantasy live shows can become.  While writing it, I kept an image in my head of putting so many notes on the page that the paper turned black.</p></blockquote>
<p>The first album for Domino, <em>Heartland</em> has an unusual subject matter: the lyrics are sung from the perspective of &#8220;a young, ultra-violent farmer, speaking to his creator&#8221; in the fictional realm of Spectrum. There are some fascinating collaborators, too: ongoing collaboration with Arcade Fire&#8217;s drummer Jeremy Gara, a guest appearance by composer Nico Muhly (whose new music is strongly influenced by his work with Philip Glass, without being derivative), mixing by Animal Collective producer Rusty Santos, and a number of others.</p>
<p>After our <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/09/28/au-revoir-simones-new-music-video-and-missing-a-dark-side-for-shadows/">extended discussion</a> in comments about what constitutes an appropriate artist for CDM, Final Fantasy is not really digital music. But it does promise an interesting interview on the &#8220;creation&#8221; side, and &#8211; given that many brilliant artists find it tough to be articulate in interviews &#8211; I know that&#8217;s what matters when I have my choice.</p>
<p>The new album is due in January.</p>

<p>Windows matters. It’s what roughly half of CDM readers use, and – for all the attention Apple gets – it’s a big part of the computer music world. Windows today also faces many of the same under-the-hood challenges that other operating systems do, so even if you’re a die-hard Linux or Mac user, you may want to pay attention.&#160; You don’t need to love Windows, and you certainly won’t be hosting a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/video-windows-7-launch-party-parody-is-bleeping-genius/">Windows 7 launch party</a>. You want to know if the OS will get out of your way and let you get to work.</p>
<p>Windows Vista proved what happens when an operating system’s many interconnected pieces are out of alignment. Even a graphics driver out of sync with underlying changes in the OS could render audio unusable, because just one missed sample can produce an audible glitch or dropout. Part of why I’m optimistic about Windows 7 is that Vista today is a radically different picture, thanks to many, many fixes delivered by Microsoft in updates and more mature audio and video drivers. But that means not just whether 7 is better than XP, but whether 7 is also better than Vista.</p>
<p>Vista wasn’t entirely alone: Mac and Linux have all had their share of growing pains in recent years. The devil is usually in the details. So, I again turn to one of the best guys in the business for sorting out all those technical details. Noel Borthwick, the CTO for <a href="http://cakewalk.com">Cakewalk</a>, probably has a better big-picture view of how music and audio work in Windows than anyone on the planet. He’s a person hardware and software vendors <em>outside</em> Cakewalk often rely upon as a resource. Noel kept us technically honest on Vista, and he’s doing it again on Windows 7, with some exclusive information for CDM.</p>
<p>Those details get mighty technical, so here’s the punchline: Windows 7 is an OS Noel would use himself. It was hard to get anyone to recommend Vista over XP; loyal Windows-using developers I know still largely stick to XP. But would Noel switch from XP to 7?</p>
<blockquote><p>Yes, absolutely. Windows 7 finally delivers on the stability and performance that users hoped for from Vista. The kernel changes and optimizations for large scale multi-core processors make it very attractive to DAW users who are interested in better low latency performance. I will be building a new DAW soon and Windows 7 X64 will be my OS of choice.</p>

<p>What’s new in Windows 7?</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Better multithreading: </strong>Improved performance of highly-multithreaded software and hardware by removing a significant bottleneck, especially relevant to a tool like SONAR </li>
<li><strong>Better memory management: </strong>Improved memory management when working with multiple threads </li>
<li><strong>Less nagging: </strong>More customization over UAC prompts (meaning they don&#8217;t have to nag you more than you want) </li>
<li><strong>More lightweight: </strong>Fewer system services run by default on a stock system, plus a leaner footprint of the OS </li>
<li><strong>Media support: </strong>More native media format support, including QuickTime MOV and H.264, plus drag-and-drop media transcoding </li>
<li><strong>Composite devices: </strong>More logical display of hardware with multiple functions (like audio and MIDI). </li>
<li><strong>FireWire: </strong>Enhanced FireWire support, with IEEE 1394b </li>
<li><strong>Multi-touch: </strong>Multi-touch display support </li>
<li><strong>Usability improvements: </strong>An improved user interface, task bar, and Libraries for managing files </li>
</ul>
<p>If you’re ready for all the gory details, read on – including a frank appraisal of how all of this compares to XP in real-world performance, and what compatibility issues to look out for if upgrading from either Vista or XP.</p>
<p><strong>Noel Borthwick of Cakewalk </strong>effectively <em>wrote</em> this story in response to my questions, so these answers all come from him. Microsoft has not responded to my requests for a review copy, so I’ll be able to evaluate this on my own system – albeit far less scientifically than Noel can – closer to launch.</p>

<p><strong>WARNING: Extremely geeky details of the inner workings of Windows 7 follow, </strong>in keeping with our “never dumbed down” policy. If you’re a developer, you can likely get some leads on how to better support Windows 7 in a single point, something even Microsoft doesn’t provide as completely. But if you’re willing to dig, you get a rare view of the OS from a developer view – no marketing speak, no cheerleading, no fanboyism, no platform wars, no writing for the lowest common denominator. </p>

<h3>What Actually Improves Audio Performance</h3>
<p><em><strong>Peter:</strong> In terms of performance for audio production, what are the significant differences in Windows 7?</em></p>
<p><strong>Noel:</strong> Windows 7 on the surface is very similar to Windows Vista. It has the same audio driver support and same audio system infrastructure as Vista. However, it’s some of the under-the-hood improvements that are more significant for audio production. There are some interesting innovations and optimizations in the Windows kernel, making the OS more scalable for concurrent processing. This makes it attractive for highly multithreaded applications like SONAR. Additionally there are various new API’s/SDK’s that may be of significance to developers. Some highlights are below:</p>
<p><b>Multi-threading: Removal of the kernel “global <em>dispatcher lock”</em> </b></p>
<p>In Vista and earlier, on a highly multi-threaded system (e.g. SONAR running on an 8 core hyper-threaded Intel Core I7 PC), you have many threads all processing tiny audio buffers at low latency. All these threads are ultimately waiting on the dispatcher lock when it comes time for them to be managed by the Windows scheduler. This global lock becomes a bottleneck in the system and prevents efficient multi-core workload distribution and scalability. This problem gets magnified as you increase the number of cores since they are all gated by a common lock. In Win 7 the kernel team changed the logic in the Windows scheduler to abolish this global dispatcher lock and use per object locks. This effectively removes this age old bottleneck and allows Win 7 to scale better even under workloads of 256 processors. </p>
<p>This change means a lot to applications like SONAR that rely on multithreaded processing of very small workloads. Initial benchmark results have been promising in this regard. SONAR performs more efficiently at low latency on multi core machines. </p>
<p><b>Improved Memory Management – PFN database lock </b></p>
<p>The PFN (page frame number) database lock was used by the memory manager to lock pages of memory in the working set. Like the dispatcher lock above, this would gate memory access from different threads causing resource contention. Work in this was first done in Windows server 2003 SP1 and Windows 7 has now has this optimization as well, improving asynchronous access to memory. </p>
<p><b>Power Optimization: Core Parking</b></p>
<p>Windows 7 has a new feature called Core Parking. Core Parking is a power saving optimization that shifts processing load to one or more cores and puts other less busy cores to “sleep”. The objective is to let other cores idle if workload levels allow for it. This optimization had us scratching our heads when we ran a benchmark test on a Quad Core I7 machine. At any point in time, we would notice that some cores were idle in task manager. The reason for this turned out to be Core Parking. Core parking can be useful to save battery life while running projects on laptops.</p>
<p><strong>Better WaveRT Performance</strong></p>
<p>Unlike Windows Vista, Win7 now uses event mode internally. This is good news, since it will help guarantee that HDAudio drivers in Win7 support WaveRT event mode properly. Additionally event mode is now part of WHQL logo certification for driver vendors, so any WAVERT device must support this to get a Win7 compatibility logo.</p>
<p><em>Ed. note: The plain-English translation here is that WaveRT, Microsoft’s own real-time audio driver facility, now is more likely to work the way you expect. Cockos, makers of REAPER, actually provided the ability to turn off WaveRT Event Mode at the end of last year because of unpredictable results. Windows 7 should resolve these issues.</em></p>

<h3>Other Improvements</h3>
<p><em>Peter: Noel also assembled some other improvements worth noting in Windows 7. They’re subtle, but useful: you may finally be able to avoid installing QuickTime/iTunes just to play some video files, interfaces with audio and MIDI jacks don’t have to show up separately any more, there’s improved FireWire support, usability improvements, and multi-touch on mainstream computers is now nearly here.</em></p>
<p>Noel:</p>
<p><b>Additional File Format support</b></p>
<p>Windows 7 adds native playback support for media in MP4, MOV, 3GP, AVCHD, ADTS, M4A, and WTV multimedia containers. It has native codec’s for H.264, MPEG4-SP, ASP/DivX/Xvid, MJPEG, DV, AAC-LC, LPCM and AAC-HE</p>
<p>Yes you read that right &#8211; QuickTime MOV file support is now natively available in Windows 7 so you don’t need to install QuickTime. Another big plus is that this is supported under the X64 version of Windows 7 as well, something you cannot do with Apple’s native QuickTime itself! </p>
<p>All media files using these codec’s should play in Media Player. It appears that these new codec’s are exclusively available to Media Foundation applications and not via other legacy API’s such as DirectShow etc.</p>
<p><b>File format transcoding</b></p>
<p>File format transcoding of many popular formats is now built into the Windows 7 shell. I.e. dragging and dropping files onto a device automatically performs the necessary format transcoding if the format is supported. This was primarily done to copy formats to portable devices like cameras but should be useful in other scenarios as well.</p>
<p><b>Multi-function devices and Device Containers</b>: </p>
<p>Prior to Windows 7, every device attached to the system was treated as a single functional “end-point”. While appropriate for single-function devices (such as an audio interface), this does elegantly represent multi-function devices such as a combination audio/MIDI interface. In Windows 7, the drivers and status information for multi-function device can be grouped together as a single &quot;Device Container&quot;, which is then presented to the user in the new &quot;Devices and Printers&quot; Control Panel as a single unit.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/Device/DeviceExperience/ContainerIDs.mspx">http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/Device/DeviceExperience/ContainerIDs.mspx</a></p>
<p><em>Note: this should not be confused with device aggregation as is available with Core Audio on Mac OS. On the Mac, you can treat multiple audio interfaces as though they’re one interface, so, for instance, you could get extra outputs by combining a couple of audio interfaces, and your software will see them as if they’re just one box. But SONAR provides this capability on its own, so if you’re a SONAR user, you can get the same functionality.</em></p>
<p><b>FireWire/USB</b></p>
<p>Windows 7 contains a new FireWire (IEEE 1394) stack that fully supports IEEE 1394b with S800, S1600 and S3200 data rates. According to reports, USB 3.0 may be supported in a future Windows Update. It was initially planned for Win7 but is not supported in the shipping version of Win7 due to delays in the USB 3 specification.</p>
<p><b>Multi-touch</b></p>
<p>Windows 7 includes integrated support for multi-touch displays.</p>
<p><b>Libraries </b></p>
<p>Libraries are user-defined collections of content including folders. It’s a handy way to categorize and create shortcuts to samples, music, etc. Special shell folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, and so on) are now Libraries. </p>
<p><b>Accelerators for Windows </b></p>
<p>Windows 7 Accelerators provide a way for learning more about selected text, optionally using voice control. </p>
<p><b>Virtual hard disks</b></p>
<p>The Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7 incorporate support for the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file format. VHD files can be mounted as drives, created, and booted from.    <br />An installation of Windows 7 can be booted and run from a VHD drive, even on non-virtual hardware, thereby providing a new way to multi boot Windows. </p>
<p><b>Leaner Footprint</b></p>
<p>Win7 has a leaner footprint and has been tweaked to work well on less powerful PC’s, laptops and Netbooks. I have heard reports of Win7 working more smoothly on machines that would be slow under Vista.</p>
<p><strong>Listen Mode</strong></p>
<p>Another nice touch in Win 7 is that they now have a listen tab in the audio properties. Turning on &quot;listen mode&quot; basically routes input to the default output device allowing you to monitor an input device in Windows itself. Sadly this runs via the Windows audio engine which is always running in WASAPI shared mode, so it&#8217;s subject to a 30 msec delay. Of course you can always load an application like SONAR and route the audio inputs to an output for low latency monitoring.</p>

<h3>Compatibility: What to Watch</h3>
<p><strong>Upgrading from Vista</strong></p>
<p><em><strong>Peter: </strong>Relative to Vista, are there any changes that are likely to introduce new compatibility issues with hardware or software? </em></p>
<p><strong>Noel: </strong>With any new OS there is always the potential for compatibility issues. Win7 is built on the Vista foundation and one of its goals was better compatibility. As such most applications that are Vista compliant should work as well or better in Windows 7. UAC in Windows 7 has been improved so this might also help with general compatibility problems with some applications.</p>
<p>We have run into only a couple of compatibility issues in Win7 during the course of our development/testing of SONAR 8.5. </p>
<p>The MMIO API in Win7 (typically used for writing RIFF wave files) has a compatibility issue with the mmioDescend API with LIST &#8216;WAVE&#8217; chunks. This caused our code that reads audio bundle files to fail and read scrambled audio data. We worked around this problem in 8.5</p>
<p>In WASAPI exclusive mode under Win7, the minimum latency you can achieve is now unfortunately 3ms and the code reports an error if lower. The fact that Vista has no such limitation has been reported to Microsoft. Hopefully its a mistaken fence in their code and this issue is fixed via an update, since it’s a step backwards for low latency in WASAPI mode.</p>
<p><em>Ed.: That last issue is an interesting one for anyone really pushing the envelope with low latency, so I’ll keep in touch with Noel if there’s any update.</em></p>
<p><strong>Upgrading from XP</strong></p>
<p><i><strong>Peter: </strong>What hardware and software compatibility issues should users be aware of if they&#8217;re thinking of migrating not from Vista but from XP to Windows 7?</i></p>
<p><strong>Noel: </strong>The compatibility issues that typically affect users migrating from XP to Vista/Win7 are:</p>
<p><strong>UAC problems:</strong> Many applications and plug-ins are not built to handle the newer security settings in these OS’s. For example, if an application relies on something that requires administrative access it will fail when running as a limited user in Win7. This is a serious issue since in Vista/Win7 even if you are running from an administrator account; programs are launched by default with <b>limited user privileges</b>. Unlike XP, you have to explicitly run as an administrator to use such programs. To be Win7 logo-compatible, all applications need to should support running as a limited user.</p>
<p><strong>Drivers:</strong> Although for most practical purposes audio drivers in XP and Windows 7/Vista are similar (you still need to write WDM drivers) there are sometimes quirks in specific drivers may cause problems. Most typical driver issues here are caused by installers that make assumptions about the OS version. In many cases this issue can be solved by the end user by setting the “compatibility mode” to Vista in the file properties for the appropriate driver installer file. (Right click the setup exe file to set its properties)</p>
<p><em>Ed.: I don’t feel either of these is a deal-killer, as I’ve been living with Vista for some time, but they’re still worth watching out for if upgrading from XP. And it means if you have an older machine that’s still working properly, you’re just likely to leave it on XP and worry about sorting the upgrade on a new box.</em></p>
<h3>Less Nagging?</h3>
<p><i><strong>Peter: </strong>We talked when Vista came out about User Account Control and particularly audio-specific tasks that required elevation or different handling of permissions in Vista. I know UAC has been streamlined in W7. Do these changes impact audio apps at all? Are there corresponding under-the-hood changes?</i></p>
<p><strong>Noel: </strong>The UAC changes in Win7 are primarily to allow more customization over the UAC elevation prompting process. There are no changes to the fundamentals of how UAC itself works that I am aware of. The classic problem with audio applications with UAC is when programs or plug-ins write to areas of the registry or file system prohibited from standard user access. Even when you are running as an administrator, by default when you launch a program (or the program itself launches a secondary process) Windows 7 will run that process with standard user privileges. If a program or plug-in attempts to write to an area which it doesn’t have write privileges for, virtualization will kick in. While this may allow the program to work, in general it is bad practice to rely on virtualization, since it can cause many unwanted side effects and behaviors in applications.</p>
<p>There are now four customization settings for UAC:</p>
<p>1. Never notify (least secure). The user is not notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is not notified when they make changes to Windows settings or when programs try to do so. </p>
<p>2. Only notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer. The user is not notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is not notified when they make changes to Windows settings. However, the user is notified when programs try to make changes to the computer, including Windows settings. </p>

<h3>Customization and Tuning Advice</h3>
<p><i>Peter: How much customization would you advise people do to their OS? That is, you&#8217;ve just installed a build of Windows 7 for working with SONAR on a test machine. Do you run the stock configuration, or start turning off services, disabling disk indexing, etc.?</i></p>
<p>Noel: Optimization and customization is a topic that can’t be fully discussed in the scope of a brief article. In general you need to optimize a system when you have known bottlenecks. Otherwise you can spend a lot of time tweaking things that have little effect on the end goal. In fact, you may even end up destabilizing a perfectly working system. A stock Win7 machine is not optimized for audio necessarily but it appears MS put some thought into trimming out unwanted startup tasks to cut down on startup time. For example there are now “Triggered start services” in Windows 7, so out of the box you can have fewer services running after a fresh boot. There are probably many background services in a modern DAW that could be suspended if you don’t need them but they should be evaluated on a case by case basis depending on what you use the machine for.</p>
<p><i>Peter: A lot of users were advising running Vista with Aero off, certainly in the early days. Do you think it&#8217;s now advisable to leave Desktop Window Compositing switched on for audio work? (Note: I am aware that there&#8217;s actually no way to *completely* disable the Aero windowing environment in a way that it reverts to XP, as even in Class mode with no compositing settings the engine has been altered.)</i></p>
<p>Generally speaking, turning off Aero will free up some resources on your system, since it uses more costly 3D graphics rendering and transparency a lot. However on any modern graphics card, Aero offloads a lot to the GPU so unless your DAW is also competing for the same GPU resources, turning it off may or may not make an appreciable difference to performance. Most applications that are not graphics intensive use GDI for rendering to the screen and since GDI doesn’t take advantage of DirectX hardware acceleration it’s normally not contesting with the GPU. If you are using plug-ins that use Direct 2D or Direct3D, you are probably better off disabling Aero.</p>

<h3>Launch Party, After All?</h3>
<p>Thanks, Noel. So, the big news behind all of this is that a move from XP to Windows 7 is finally advisable.</p>
<p>I would still caution, as I did recently with Mac OS Snow Leopard, that you typically don’t want to upgrade to a new OS the day it launches. You’ll want to verify compatibility with your software and hardware before making the jump.</p>
<p>That said, this is an unusual upgrade in that it appears to <em>resolve</em> more issues than it introduces. I actually haven’t been able to find a single user out there testing Windows 7 who has found any issues with audio or music production. Of course, when it launches, we’ll have a much larger test base, so I expect we’ll find something – even Windows Service Packs and point releases of Mac OS have been known to create some issues. As we get closer to launch, I’ll review how you would backup your existing XP or Vista system to ensure that if you do choose to upgrade, you can revert to a previous version.</p>
<p>I am, however, cautiously optimistic. And now is an especially good time to make the jump to 64-bit. It’s easier on Windows than any other OS at the moment, and easiest in SONAR, because SONAR allows you to easily migrate 32-bit plug-ins into the 64-bit environment. You’ll need a 64-bit machine and enough memory to make 64-bit worthwhile, but if you’re building a new workstation, as Noel is, the timing could be perfect.</p>
<p>I also think there’s plenty of room left to talk about issues that go between operating systems, particularly how audio software can better support multi-threading and processing on the GPU, multi-touch, as well as emerging I/O standards like USB3. (OpenCL, much-touted in Snow Leopard, is also supported on Linux and Windows, and Linux actually beat both Mac OS and Windows to the punch in providing a first implementation of USB3.) <em>Correction: I should also add that the excellent <a href="http://reaper.fm">Reaper</a> has also added this feature. With full 64-bit support in Cakewalk&#8217;s own Dimension and other instruments, NI&#8217;s Kontakt sampler, and the bundled 64-bit-native plug-ins in Reaper and SONAR, that means you can build a really capable 64-bit rig on Windows.</em> </p>
<p>With fixes getting the OS out of your way, we can return to issues that really matter, many of which apply to every OS.</p>
<p>Music is, as always, the perfect place to talk about these issues. We push our machines harder than just about anyone, and in ways that are the least tolerant of timing discrepencies and glitches. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if you want to look into the future of computing, ask a musician.</p>

<p>There’s a curious distinction in hardware keyboards. You’ll find plenty of keyboards geared for performance with software at the low-end to mid-range. But if you want a keyboard with uncompromising durability and action – and you’re willing to pay more and lift more weight – those choices suddenly disappear. Suddenly, you have to buy a workstation keyboard or something with built-in sounds or even built-in speakers. What if you want a really uncompromising keyboard <em>to use with software</em> and nothing else?</p>
<p>It’s almost as though manufacturers assume “serious” musicians want to gig with built-in sounds on a standalone keyboard. That’s a pretty stunning assumption in the year 2009, given the versatility, reliability, and unmatched sound quality and diversity of software instruments. If you’re looking for a controller alone, your options are limited. M-Audio, Novation, and others have some great affordable options, but nothing really high-end. Roland, Yamaha, and Casio have some nice controllers, but the higher-end models aren’t dedicated to the task, and therefore there’s no way to dedicate all your dollars to the controller itself. (Dig deeper, and there’s still more sacrifices to make – yes, you can have x, but then we take away y…) My short list would probably be Doepfer’s lovely keyboard in a road case and Studiologic – and that’s about it.</p>
<p>Studiologic’s new Numa Nero, therefore, looks like the serious controller a lot of us have been waiting for. It’s a full, 88-note keyboard made for serious musicians. Yes, part of it is plastic, but plastic doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap” – good-quality plastic can be more durable than other materials. And the design itself finally focuses on getting you the best-possible keybed and action, assuming your software will take care of the sound generation.</p>

<ul>
<li>Graded hammer action (essential for piano players, as it makes the lower end heavier than the higher end)</li>
<li>The last key mechanism design by late Fatar founder/designer Lino Ragni</li>
<li>Double-dipped, “full-body” solid black keys – <em>not</em> hollow black keys. (The press release points out that most digital pianos have hollow keys, which is something I can verify. Unless you play in C major all the time, this is a major problem.)</li>
<li>20 dynamic curve settings which “sense” playing in real-time and respond accordingly. It sounds like the piano action equivalent of anti-lock brakes; I have to try it to understand what they mean!</li>
<li>4 zones with independent velocity curves, MIDI, program, pedal, and control settings</li>
<li>Two pedal inputs, plus an illuminated side wheel controller. (The side is an unusual place for a wheel, but I could still see being able to reach it live.)</li>

<p>Now, what’s missing from all of this is a control surface, which bothered me initially – you don’t, for instance, get faders to use as drawbars. Upon reflection, though, I actually think having all that empty space is a huge advantage. If you’re an organ player, you can add a drawbar controller. If you’re controlling unusual instruments, you could add a touchscreen-equipped laptop. Or add a monome. You get the idea.</p>
<p>And the best feature of all may be this: “An aluminum back piece slides out to support another keyboard, sound module, or laptop, without the need for another stand.”</p>
<p>No, my only remaining gripe is that, while the keyboard supports aftertouch, it’s monophonic aftertouch, not polyphonic. Poly aftertouch seems to be a dying breed, but it would certainly have qualified this keyboard as “ultimate.” I’m nonetheless dying to play the Numa Nero. I’ve been waiting a long time for a worthy controller that <em>doesn’t</em> try to make sounds or arrange beats for you or do anything other than talk to your software setup, and this could be it.</p>
<p>US$1274, which goes to prove my point – focus entirely on the controller, and you can keep the cost low without compromise. Weight: 57.3 ponds.</p>
<p>There’s also a 22-pound <a href="http://www.fatar.com/Studiologic/Pages/NUMANANO.html">Numa Nano</a> coming at winter NAMM; keep your eyes out for that one – if it could be just as brilliantly-designed but more liftable, it could be the perfect companion, a nano on the road and a Nero back in the studio (or when you’ve got transport).</p>

<p>And yes, it’s worth considering the entire <a href="http://www.fatar.com/Studiologic/Pages/intro_cat.htm">Studiologic range</a>. Ironically, the line they call “vintage” is the one with lots of added controls. They’re absurdly cheap for the quality, have action that can beat most of the pricier options out there, and immensely logical designs that pack maximum playability into the weight and form factor. The designs are, charitably, “workmanlike,” but if it’s more playable, who cares? I also understand they’re easy to service. Now, the only remaining question is why the Italian-based Studiologic seems to be so alone in getting this area right.</p>

Melodyne DNA did take longer than expected to ship, but then, <em>that</em> isn&#8217;t exactly news in the software business. And now you can try this &#8220;note access&#8221; concept for yourself and see what you think (well, provided you&#8217;re an existing customer). Coupled with time-based manipulation of audio in the form of updated tools in Ableton Live 8, Cakewalk SONAR 8.5, Propellerhead Record, Logic Studio 9, and others, with Melodyne handling the pitch, audio today could be more fluid than ever.</p>

<p>What Melodyne&#8217;s editor enables:</p>

<li>Pitch, position, duration, and loudness and softness can be modified.</li>
<li>Formant spectra, vibrato, and pitch drift are accessible.</li>
<li>Pitch, amplitude, and formant transitions <em>between notes</em> can be edited.</li>
</ul>
<p>Now, all of this is in a plug-in, but that plug-in is more capable than previous versions, with better multi-threading, an adjustable window size (sigh of relief), and the ability to audition and scrub as you edit. That&#8217;s not quite as good as having this functionality in your host, but it&#8217;s more than good enough to make this usable.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m especially interested in what unusual sound design possibilities can be harnessed using this technology &#8211; abusing it rather than using it as intended.</p>

<p>I was one of the first people outside Native Instruments to lay eyes on Maschine, and immediately I saw something with real potential. Here was a software drum machine that was different: it was a real attempt to fuse some of the advantages of a software interface with some of the working methods of hardware. Software and hardware had really grown up together, instead of the latter simply being fitted to the former. And, of course, it had NI-style effects and UI look-and-feel, for fans of the software house&#8217;s style.</p>
<p>But 1.0 releases are a funny thing. As someone who spends a bit of my life developing tools, you always wind up with a choice of delaying the release, implementing something partway, or choosing not to implement it so it can be done properly later. And Maschine 1.0 lacked for me the one thing that was really essential to workflow &#8211; proper MIDI input and output support. Without that, I felt it was difficult to even give it a fair test. You&#8217;d wind up getting hung up on what was missing.</p>
<p>Well, good news: Maschine 1.1 gets all the little features I feel are essential to making it a viable and valuable part of the production workflow. It&#8217;s in public beta now, and I&#8217;m giving it a proper test. But here are the current changes in the present build, which includes all of the major items on my must-have list:<span id="more-7547"></span></p>

<p>MIDI capabilities mean, for instance, you can throw Maschine into your host of choice (including the popular Ableton Live) and make really use of it. And you can drag and drop audio with the host, as well. The ability to have more slicing sizes is absolutely fundamental, as well.</p>
<p>Stay tuned, as this is just a first look at what&#8217;s in the beta. </p>

<p>The usual disclaimers apply: you need Maschine 1.0.3, backup projects made with 1.0.3 before opening in the beta, once you save a project with the beta, it can&#8217;t be opened in earlier releases (though it sounds like it can be opened in the final 1.1.0), and don&#8217;t expect technical support &#8211; expect to fill out bug reports! That&#8217;s what makes it a beta!</p>
<p>Also on the NI front, there are some excellent new Ableton Live templates for the KORE controller &#8211; yes, KORE, not Maschine &#8211; recently added to the KORE build, so I hope to cover that, as well. What I want is a Native Instruments Timepak(R). Add it to your existing KOMPLETE(R) or KORE(TM) setup, and instantly have more time for sound programming and less need for sleep &#8211; aka SCHLAFEN(TM) and &#8211; what I often get &#8211; SCHLAFEN LE.</p>

<p>KORG has other new product announcements, and I think both are going to be big hits for them. </p>
<p>The SV-1 stage piano falls well into the category of &#8220;why didn&#8217;t anyone else do this first?&#8221; First, it looks beautiful &#8211; finally, a keyboard designed for the stage that actually looks good onstage. (I don&#8217;t know, maybe manufacturers assume us keyboardists are ugly?) Second, it combines all the sounds many gigging keyboardists need, instead of an odd assortment that covers some bases but not all, or overkill workstation keyboards that do too much and get too complex. Third, it&#8217;s finally a hardware keyboard that learns some recent lessons from software &#8211; you need to model the characteristics of the real thing, and people expect good amp models, and the like. Fourth, it&#8217;s&#8230; okay, it&#8217;s just really, really pretty, which I expect will change how everyone feels about the whole package.</p>
<p><strong>Updated:</strong> Yes, in fairness, Nord has potent competition waiting for the KORG, and available first. I think either the Nord Stage or Nord Combo win handily if organ sounds are important, and both are designed to double as external controllers if you do like software. The Nord also has more bells and whistles for editing and sound control. On the other hand, the KORG will clearly appeal to people who are in it mainly for the electric piano side of the coin. And pretty as the Nord is &#8211; as much as they&#8217;re both shades of red &#8211; I think the KORG is still pretty darned sexy-looking.</p>
<p>In addition to all the specs and such, KORG has the manual online, so you can get into the details. </p>

<p>Oh, yeah, just one gripe &#8211; I always think it&#8217;s silly when you put a window in front of the tube. But I won&#8217;t knock it; I expect it helps on the sales floor. At least the side that faces the audience looks like a racecar.</p>

<p>Now, I have just one request for the whole industry: some of us really do like our computers. Can we please, please have <em>one</em> top-flight software keyboard controller that&#8217;s worth spending extra dollars on and looks like it means business? Unfortunately, the industry has decided the &#8220;pros&#8221; want nice hardware keyboards, and anyone using software is probably a basement producer &#8211; which is why you see the pros, when they want a software controller, using hardware like the Yamaha Motif for the job <em>even when there&#8217;s no actual sound coming out of it</em>. </p>

<p>The other announcement is a redesigned WAVEDRUM. For those of you who haven&#8217;t discovered the Cult of Wavedrum (and the rival Roland Handsonic),  this may be a bigger deal than you think. As it happens, the electronic music world often wants stuff that doesn&#8217;t fall in a predictable category. Digital virtual bongo head? Why, yes, people want that &#8211; to play virtual conga or tabla, or just as a controller for other sounds. The new Wavedrum is built with more sounds, more effects, and more sensors for a wider sonic palette, including newer features like physically-modeled sounds and the ability to apply different effects to different parts of the surface. I&#8217;m guessing it&#8217;s still no match for boutique controllers, but it could give the Handsonic a serious run for its money &#8211; not least because it looks a heck of a lot better. (Hey, it matters.)</p>

<p>It aims to do what for sampling what the insanely-popular microKORG keyboard has done for synths: that is, invade bedrooms and bands everywhere, and inspire a kind of love that other hardware finds elusive. But it also combines the micro-keyboard form factor and mic with everything that has made the KAOSS Pad series popular. It&#8217;s kind of a bundle of things about KORG that the masses love. So, perhaps that&#8217;s why the microSAMPLER leaked well before its introduction. I&#8217;m about the last to cover it, I think, so let&#8217;s see if I can get right to the point of what the microSAMPLER looks to be, and what it isn&#8217;t.</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s a sampler for keyboard lovers.</strong> As the video notes, the world doesn&#8217;t need another sampler with pads. The keyboard is put to good use. It&#8217;s velocity-sensitive, though with mini keys to keep it compact. You can map different samples to different keys, slicing up your sample so that different lengths (from a 64th note to two measures). You can give keys different one-shot samples, for drum-style sounds. You can play looped samples. And you can map a single sample across the keyboard.</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s built for capturing live.</strong> The mic has been torture-tested in lousy acoustic environments and onstage in the microKORG. It&#8217;s the design of the interface that makes this fun &#8211; and potentially worth considering over the software solutions that aim to do the same stuff. &#8220;Auto-Next&#8221; mode lets you tap in BPM from a source and automatically slice on the fly.</p>
<p><strong>That isn&#8217;t an iPhone slot.</strong> The microSAMPLER has slots in which you can stick stuff, as noted by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/16/video-korg-places-an-iphone-pocket-in-its-microsampler-calls-i/">engadget</a>. Yes, the photos and videos show iPhones and iPods, but they aren&#8217;t a dock, and you can put something more interesting in there &#8211; like a Game Boy or a PSP running <a href="http://www.littlegptracker.com/">LGPT</a>. Rich Formidoni, the specialist you see in the video, tells me he&#8217;s tempted to use them for pretzels or mints. Heck yes. You can even sample the crunching sound. And I have just two words: aftermarket cupholder. (Coming soon to the CDM Store?)<span id="more-7527"></span></p>
<p><strong>You can resample and add effects.</strong> Resampling lets you &#8220;bounce&#8221; samples with effects or grab your playing to produce new samples. And the effects are borrowed from the KAOSS series, including tasty and distinctive-sounding ring modulator and grain shifter effects.</p>
<p><strong>Loops and patterns.</strong> You can overdub pattern recordings into a pattern sequencer, switch between patterns, and take advantage of a loop recording feature derived from the KAOSSILATOR.</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s really, totally ugly.</strong> I mean that as a compliment. Like somewhere deep in the Korg product design archives, the case design for the microSAMPLER has been lurking in a pile of schematic drawings from 1986. Not ugly in the bizarre way, like when KORG unveiled a camouflage version of the microKORG (handy for use in a duck blind). Ugly in a cool way, as if we&#8217;ve always had microSAMPLERs. Is &#8220;timelessly dated&#8221; a phrase?</p>
<p><strong>It&#8217;s lo-fi when you want it to be.</strong> You can sample at a full 48 kHz (though, oddly, not at 44.1), but you can also crank down to 12 or 6 kHz for retro sampling capabilities. <strong>Updated: there is a decimator, too</strong>. I didn&#8217;t see it in the specs, but the microSAMPLER in fact has a 24-bit to 4-bit decimator effect. You can resample that, so while you can&#8217;t natively sample at lower bitrates, you get the same result.</p>
<p><strong>It weighs only 4 pounds,</strong> and connects to your computer via USB, with editor/librarian software for Windows and Mac and import of WAV/AIFF files.</p>
<p><strong>It runs on batteries.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Sample memory:</strong> 8 banks, 39 samples per bank, 160 seconds maximum per sample, for a total of between 21 and 170 minutes of mono samples depending on your sampling rate. (Check the <a href="http://www.korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=559">specs</a>.) That seems just enough to sacrifice some of the flexibility of computers with the accessibility of hardware.</p>
<p>US$750 I believe is list price, so, given what we&#8217;ve seen from KORG products before, expect a street below that.</p>

<p>The KORG piece is not without competition. Roland has just unveiled an updated version of its popular SP-404, the <a href="http://www.rolandconnect.com/product.php?p=sp-404sx">SP-404SX</a>. It&#8217;s really the opposite of this unit; it&#8217;s a conventional, compact rectangle with pads as controllers. (Actually, it&#8217;s too bad Roland doesn&#8217;t have an option for a gooseneck mic for the SP-404.) At the other end of the spectrum, Native Instruments and Tim Exile have their own software-style solution to how to sample creatively live, using Reaktor under the hood &#8211; which means you get some very different-sounding granular effects than what&#8217;s accomplished by the KORG DSP. That&#8217;s to say nothing of loop samplers in the recent versions of Logic and Live. And I&#8217;m personally intrigued to see other takes on how to put together live samplers. In fact, I don&#8217;t think you could really compare any of these methods &#8211; we&#8217;re lucky enough to have commercial and DIY solutions that provide a range of options. So mostly what I&#8217;d like to see, aside from looking at the hardware, is people doing interesting creative an artistic work with these capabilities. There&#8217;s certainly no excuse for boring performances. Sample on. (Now, I&#8217;d better go off and practice.)</p>
<p><strong>Updated: how loop recording works.</strong> In fact, you can get LoopStation-style loops which loop at the length of the initial recording. But likely to be more ideal is the ability to match tempo on the fly. Here&#8217;s an explanation from product specialist Rich:</p>
<blockquote><p>The length of a conventional sample won’t determine the system tempo… but when you’re using the Looper effect, which records like a Kaossilator, it will continue to loop the same amount of time you used to record.</p>
<p>It does work the other way around, though.  Samples can be set to timestretch on the fly, on an individual basis, to fit whatever the tapped system tempo is.</p></blockquote>
<p>I think that actually covers what most people want &#8211; even if it would be cool to set the primary tempo to the length of a loop.</p>
