<p>Commercial developers are now releasing music creation apps for mobile game systems, in the form of the KORG DS-10 for Nintendo DS and Rockstar&#8217;s Beaterator for PSP. But some of the best ideas still come from the homebrew community. </p>
<p>What&#8217;s most impressive about ToneSynthDS is not so much what it does as its interface, fitting all its functionality into the DS&#8217; two compact screens. Its minimal interface finds an elegant arrangement of everything you most urgently need, with a sequencer screen on one DS screen and basic virtual analog synth parameters on the other. A 4 x 4 matrix next to the main sequencer grid lets you switch between patterns, in a step sequencer reminiscent of the monome and Tenori-On. There isn&#8217;t a whole lot of depth to event editing in this early version, but it could be a lovely way to sketch melodic patterns. (And some of those limitations come from the DS itself. Note, though, that this app gets a full 16 real-time channels on the original DS hardware to the Korg DS-10&#8217;s paltry two.)</p>
<p>Developer Fanta/Hotelsinus Sound Design has been posting mock-ups, demos, and now builds as he goes. That means that he gets feedback from an audience of readers and incorporates those as he develops the app &#8211; another key difference between the DIY/homebrew scene and conventional commercial development.</p>
<p>More good news: this DS app should also run as a PC VST in a forthcoming version, opening up the fun to folks using netbooks and laptops instead of the DS and creating a nice mobile-to-computer workflow.</p>

<p><strong>In related Nintendo DS news:</strong> If you&#8217;re thinking about getting the new DS-10 Plus Limited Edition of the KORG DS-10, you&#8217;ll need to get it for the region coding of your DS. (In other words, you probably won&#8217;t want to import it.) The &#8220;Dual Mode&#8221; functions are region-locked, so North American and European users can&#8217;t use the Japanese DS-10. That&#8217;s not such a big deal, as North American distribution was announced, and other regions are expected to follow, but it&#8217;s good to know. <a href="http://allthingskorgds10.blogspot.com/2009/10/nintendo-dsi-game-region-alert.html">See details on the All Things KORG DS-10 blog</a>. <p>Clearly, there&#8217;s a lot of work still to be done, so test this build at your own risk. But it&#8217;s already good fun, and the coming roadmap looks logical, with filter options, disk rendering, song mode, and more in store. It&#8217;s also an interesting read as far as wrangling with emulators and some of the challenges of DS development.</p>

<p>Within days of the release of Plogue&#8217;s Chipsounds, we have a couple of fair reviews of the new tool. Already got Chipsounds? Plogue&#8217;s David Viens has released screencasts showing you how to use it. Curious about other ways to explore vintage 8-bit sound? We&#8217;ve got that, too, in samples, hardware, and even SuperCollider code.</p>
<h3>Reviews are in</h3>
<p>Torley has an extensive video review &#8211; amazing stuff for something just days old &#8211; shown above. Gisle Martens Meyers has a review, too, <a href="http://www.ugress.com/post.asp?id=1252">on the blog Ugress</a>. One complaint is that the plug-in is multi-timbral, rather than requiring different instances. In turn, automation is in the form of MIDI Control Changes, not parameters, since parameter automation really doesn&#8217;t deal with multi-timbral plug-ins. But all in all, you can get a lot from both reviews, plus a look at how the software works. There&#8217;s also a sense of where the software could go in future updates.</p>

<h3>Get Your Chip Fix</h3>
<p>This is by no means comprehensive, but here are a few of the best goodies readers have pointed out in the last few days:</p>
<p><strong>Free Samples:</strong> Little Scale, aka Sebastian Tomczak, has been busy. He&#8217;s added sample packs of his own, including a Friday release of the Commodore 64 SID. Add that to Sega Master System, Mega Drive, speech chip, and Atari POKEY and TIA. These are just samples, so rather than being a turn-key solution as Chipsounds is, they&#8217;re more of a construction set &#8211; though that could make them useful in other scenarios.</p>

<p><strong>Go Hardware!</strong> And, in turn, if hardware fires you up more than software or samples, Sebastian has done some lovely work connecting the actual chips to MIDI interfaces.</p>

<p><strong>SuperCollider Code:</strong> For SuperCollider fans, Fredrik Olofsson (aka RedFrik) has built emulations of vintage chips in the object-oriented sound coding language. That&#8217;s a doubly delicious thing: aside from allowing you to make 8-bit sounds in the free tool, looking at his emulations is a great way to discover more of what you can do with SuperCollider. You can continue in code the kind of elegant, minimal synthesis design work the early creators of the original chips did in hardware. (Thanks, Howard S and Morgan Packard for the tip!)</p>

<h3>Video walkthroughs</h3>
<p>I know quite a few readers did pick up Chipsounds, so you&#8217;ll be pleased to know &#8211; in case you missed this &#8211; that there are some video demos that walk you through how the tool works. This also gives a better idea of how the software itself functions, since I got distracted waxing rhapsodic about the chips!</p>

<p>Call it the 8-bit preservation society. Chipsounds is now available. It&#8217;s a new programmable soft synth, filled with custom oscillators and samples of famous and obscure vintage chips, accompanied by an EP of free chip tracks. Far from a threat to fans of hardware, I think this release is a major achievement for fans of digital sounds.</p>
<p>Oh yeah, and if you&#8217;ve been feeling burnt out on chip music in general, firing up some of the sound of some of these more obscure chips could well change your mind. If you like sound, there&#8217;s something here for you.</p>
<p>Chip music, championed by a supportive network of artists and fans, has unquestionably made the big time. But for those who value the unique sounds of a variety of vintage 8-bit chips, there is still cause for concern. Even though they&#8217;re digital circuits, the unique design of various chips won&#8217;t last forever. Some chips are simply disappearing, while others cease to work. At the same time, while the sound of the Nintendo game system has become ubiquitous, lots of other unusual chips don&#8217;t get heard. Software emulation and sample packs so far have been pretty shallow. Emulators tend not to model all the nuances of different chips, and samples are really only expressive if they&#8217;re presented in the context of something that&#8217;s fully programmable and playable.</p>
<p>Enter Chipsounds. Creator David Viens told us about the Chipsounds project back in January:<br />

<p>Something like Chipsounds <em>could</em> have been just an attempt to cash in on &#8220;what the kids are playing.&#8221; But David&#8217;s work is more like an epic love poem to the sounds of chips themselves, not only as a reminder of game music but as a unique sound source. And the passionate chip music community got in on the act, as well, with notable artists contributing to the product&#8217;s development and in fine form on the EP. </p>
<p>But forget about that for a second. What matters is that chipsounds is an exhaustive, exhaustively programmable set of sounds that almost no eBay budget could ever amass. It takes some unique sounds and allows you to warp them into arrangements and performance configurations not possible with hardware. And it might well make you explore hardware in a new way all over again.</p>

<h3>Why Chipsounds</h3>
<p>David has a really lovely intro in the manual for the tool. He&#8217;s got a story like many of us I expect have. </p>
<blockquote><p>My father bought a Commodore VIC-20 for me and my brother when I was around nine. After a few days with it, I guess he knew I had found my calling. There is not a year that passes without me reminding him how bringing that computer home some cold autumn night changed my life.</p></blockquote>
<p>But this isn&#8217;t just nostalgia. David also notes that some of the limitations imposed by earlier 8-bit hardware caused artists and musicians to invent new techniques that were later lost. These methods can now be rediscovered and coexist with new processes only possible with newer tech. What Chipsounds represents is an expanded &#8220;sonic palette,&#8221; not just the literal representation of the hardware included. And for those willing to dig into programming the sampling instrument itself, that palette can be even wider and more personal.</p>
<p>David did a whole lot of work on research and experimentation to make this work, but also drew upon the massive community online. Here&#8217;s a look at the chips included.</p>
<h3>The Instruments</h3>
<p>David did extensive research, testing, sampling, and A/B sound programming for the project. Just going through the chips is a nice history lesson &#8211; and could be a good introduction for those interested in working with hardware, too. <p><strong>SID (6581) and (8580)</strong> It&#8217;s the mother of all sound chips, and deserves the top space in this list. The SID was the legendary Commodore 64 chip, sampled in this collection at 96KHz.  The 8580 I think doesn&#8217;t get nearly enough credit, so it&#8217;s nice to see both so you can hear the oddities of each.</p>

<p><strong>RP2A03 (NTSC) and RP2A07 (PAL) and RP2A0X (unlimited)</strong>: This is the big one &#8211; the chip in Nintendo&#8217;s NES and Famicom. It&#8217;s not actually a dedicated audio IC, but a clone of the 6502 CPU, but it still has some unique features and sounds.</p>

<p><strong>DMG-CPU, SGB and DMG(unlimited)</strong> The classic: Nintendo&#8217;s own sound generator for its Game Boy handheld. Confession time: I&#8217;ve heard this chip so much that I&#8217;m starting to long for other things. But again, because the Chipsounds collection lets you create hybrid instruments in different ranges, there&#8217;s nothing stopping you from inserting DMG sounds where you wouldn&#8217;t expect. (And while functioning Game Boys are everywhere and run a variety of amazing homebrewed sequencing software, some of these other chips aren&#8217;t as accessible or portable.)</p>

<p><strong>AY-3-8910 (various clocks sources), YM2149 (2Mhz)</strong>: General Instruments&#8217; sound chip was one of the great sound chips of the 8-bit gaming and computing age, found in the Intellivision, Vectrex, Atari ST, and Sinclair ZX, among many others. That means it&#8217;s critical not only to gaming fans, but also fans of the sounds in early tracking musicians, particularly on the Atari ST. It&#8217;s even got its own <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Instrument_AY-3-8910">Wikipedia article</a>.</p>

<p><strong>D1867G</strong> The classic Casio VL-1 makes a surprise cameo in this collection. Result: you have the opportunity to imagine your own music console that combines the sounds of the VL-Tone with the IBM PCjr, and that&#8217;s a beautiful thing. The VL-1 may be the odd man out in this collection, but then, it also exemplifies the lo-fi digital sound of the 80s &#8211; and with the ARIA sampling engine, you can warp it to do things it has never done before.</p>

<p><strong>P8244 (NTSC), P8245 (PAL)</strong> This is one of the rarer (or at least more unexpected) entries in the collection, the sound chip that drove the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnavox_Odyssey²">Magnavox Odyssey2</a>. Intel&#8217;s Video Display Controller used this chip to make both graphics and sound (hmmm&#8230; could Chipgraphics be next?) For extreme nerding out, check out David&#8217;s <a href="http://ploguechipsounds.blogspot.com/2009/10/last-minute-addition-odyssey-2-p824x.html">full post on working with this chip</a>. Unlike the other entries here, the VDC doesn&#8217;t have much documentation online for these kinds of applications.</p>

<p><strong>POKEY (various clock configuration)</strong> Atari&#8217;s <a href="http://www.dadgum.com/halcyon/BOOK/NEUBAUER.HTM">Doug Neubauer</a> created sound capabilities for this chip, used in Atari&#8217;s 8-bit computers as well as many arcade games. (The POKEY actually handled not only audio, but keyboard, pots, timing, serial&#8230; Arduino fans, take note.) Which arcade games? Try <em>Tempest</em>, <em>Gravitar</em>, <em>Gauntlet</em> and <em>Crystal Castles</em>, for starters.</p>

<p><strong>TIA (NTSC), TIA (PAL) and TIA (unlimited)</strong> Another combined graphics and sound chip, the Television Interface Adapter was the sonic soul of the Atari 2600. The variations here in Chipsounds give you a lot of choices, including the awesome &#8220;polynomial counters&#8221; which create different kinds of distortion. Using keyswitching, you can choose among these sounds live, ideal for keyboardists. And David has even included the sounds the TIA makes when the cartridge was improperly inserted.</p>

<p><strong>SN76489(AN) (various clocks)</strong> Here&#8217;s my personal favorite: the classic Texas Instruments sound chip was dead-simple (three square wave generators and one white noise generator), but elegant, efficient, and unique in sound. The BBC Micro, IBM PCjr, and ColecoVision game system all used its sounds. I can still hear the echoes of <em>Subroc</em> in my sleep. (Yeah, okay, I was a bit jealous of my friends who had Apple IIs and NES instead of the more oddball PCjr and Coleco I had, but now I&#8217;m older and appreciate them more.)</p>
<p>Side note: David was nice enough to share some of his SN chips, so I&#8217;m working on building them into standalone hardware and will share the results.</p>

<p><strong>UVI 2637(NTSC) and 2637(PAL)</strong>: Now we get into the chips you probably haven&#8217;t heard. Signetics made this chip for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcadia_2001">Arcadia 2001</a> console developed by Emerson (yeah, the electronics company) in the heady year of 1982, before the meltdown that would purge the home gaming market. That console was widely cloned, under names like the Interton, Leisure Vision, and MPT-03.</p>

<p><strong>VIC-I : 6560 (NTSC) 6561(PAL) in various configuration</strong> Here&#8217;s another oddball chip: the VIC-I, used in the VIC-20, had 7-bit pitch range, giving you oddly-tuned scales, plus a truly strange noise generator. That strange sound is rarely heard, but leave it to the demoscene to exploit it. From the Chipsounds manual:</p>
<blockquote><p>In 2003, a brilliant demo writer by the name of Viznut reverse-engineered this side effect, mapping all possible “weird” waveforms that the chip was able to reproduce in a deterministic manner, and put the to good use in his now famous “Robotic Liberation” demo.</p></blockquote>

<h3>The Software</h3>
<p>Let&#8217;s get something out of the way: I believe in synths. I&#8217;m naturally skeptical of samples. If I believed for a second Chipsounds was about plugging in some sampled sounds and hitting a key and waiting, I wouldn&#8217;t have posted this article. Fortunately, Plogue&#8217;s ARIA sampling-plus-synthesis engine is powerful enough to allow immense programmability and playability. It&#8217;s loaded up with programs that model every last detail of these instruments, while also providing the possibility to create your own, unique performance configurations. Samples make up just a portion of the sound, used where appropriate, with lots of custom oscillators and modulators, as well. This is really a full-blown instrument, not just a sample library. (ARIA has previously been sampling-only, but Chipsounds is the first of a line of instruments to use synthesis, as well.)</p>
<p><strong>Standalone, plug-in modes:</strong></p>
<p>As a plug-in, Chipsounds works with VST on Mac and Windows, RTAS (for Pro Tools) on Mac and Windows, and Audio Units on Mac. And of course, in plug-in mode you can automate all your parameters.</p>
<p>In standalone mode, you have additional features: audio file recording, MIDI file playback, and even the ability to render MIDI to audio directly.</p>

<li>Assignable tuning, polyphony, mix parameters</li>
<li>Reverb busing</li>
<li>Key switching, which allows you to change between waveforms immediately using a key on your keyboard</li>
<li>Snapshots</li>
</ul>

<p>Here&#8217;s where things get fun &#8211; and where you can do things more easily than you could with the original hardware. Even with the ARIA engine alone, you have a virtual studio of tools in which to place your samples.</p>
<ul>
<li>Arpeggiator for pitch, velocity: with configurable range, loop modes, gate, sync, etc.</li>
<li>Wave sequencer:</strong> This allows you to sequence lists of pitches on an instrument, allowing tracker-style events inside the software. (Add your own tracker to the mix and &#8211; well, things get pretty hectic.)</li>
<li>Live, high-performance oscilloscope.</li>
<li>Pitch LFO (currently fixed), pitch and amplitude envelope generators.</li>
<li>Effects, which currently includes only an ARIA-native port of the lovely Ambience reverb by Magnus Jonsson. (But then, the advantage of having these sounds on your computer is easy access to all your other effects.)</li>

<p>In order to make the Chipsounds collection, David spent time rigging quick hardware devices allowing the actual chips to be connected to a computer. That could make Chipsounds an affordable gateway drug into building your own standalone hardware with these chips as sound sources, as I hope to do soon with my TI SN&#8217;s. <p>I&#8217;m actually really interested in the possibilities of combining hardware with the open-source Arduino platform and creating devices that behave in new ways; stay tuned, and hopefully we can get a group of folks working on that.</p>
<p>One example &#8211; our friend little-scale aka Sebastian Tomczak of South Australia &#8211; has used the Arduino to connect to the SN chip and create a MIDI-controlled Sega Master System equivalent:<br />

I had commented in the past something along the lines of, “boy, wouldn’t it be great if this now meant, say, a Linux port?” and then went on the business of my daily life, which tends not to include re-compiling plug-ins. But now, the folks of JUCETICE have been busy doing just that, serving up delicious instrument and effect goodness, running native on Linux.</p>
<p>Translation: fire up that netbook and make some music.</p>
<p>Following up on our tutorial on Ardour and netbook-optimized music competition with Renoise and Indamixx, here’s what you need to get rolling.</p>

<p>With Linux growing in popularity on netbooks – and an option like the <a href="http://indamixx.com/">pre-configured Indamixx</a> solution saving you the work of optimizing and configuring it – it’s suddenly no longer a stretch to imagine yourself a Linux music user. Of course, what you <em>don’t</em> want is to wind up without the arsenal of plug-ins to which we’ve all become accustomed. There are various ways of hosting Windows VSTs under Linux as though they were native plug-ins; check out <a href="http://www.breakfastquay.com/dssi-vst/">dssi-vst</a> (which also enables 32-bit VSTs from Windows under 64-bit Linux hosts), in conjunction with <a href="http://www.winehq.org/">WINE</a>. That should probably be the subject of a separate tutorial. (Ardour 3 also promises Windows VST support.)</p>
<p>But here, let’s have a look at <em>native </em>Linux plug-ins. JUCETICE has some beautiful <a href="http://www.anticore.org/jucetice/?page_id=7">creations of their own</a> &#8211; an elegant, 32-voice polyphonic drum synthesizer and a TB-303 clone – plus some familiar favorites <a href="http://www.anticore.org/jucetice/?page_id=8">ported from Windows</a>, like the ingenious DiscoDSP sampler created by the late, great Arguru. </p>
<p>Here, we’ll use the native Linux version of a commercial host, energyXT. energyXT is proprietary, but it costs just EUR59, has a free demo to check out before you purchase, and – if you do like it – is really different than any of its competitors.</p>
<p>Patrick Shirkey of <a href="http://www.64studio.com/">64studio</a>, the music-centric Linux distro, walks us through the steps necessary to get the JUCETICE plug-ins going under energyXT on Linux – all native, no WINE or Windows anywhere.</p>
<p>I’ll be doing this myself on my Indamixx test unit, and will let you know how that goes.</p>

<p>There’s a curious distinction in hardware keyboards. You’ll find plenty of keyboards geared for performance with software at the low-end to mid-range. But if you want a keyboard with uncompromising durability and action – and you’re willing to pay more and lift more weight – those choices suddenly disappear. Suddenly, you have to buy a workstation keyboard or something with built-in sounds or even built-in speakers. What if you want a really uncompromising keyboard <em>to use with software</em> and nothing else?</p>
<p>It’s almost as though manufacturers assume “serious” musicians want to gig with built-in sounds on a standalone keyboard. That’s a pretty stunning assumption in the year 2009, given the versatility, reliability, and unmatched sound quality and diversity of software instruments. If you’re looking for a controller alone, your options are limited. M-Audio, Novation, and others have some great affordable options, but nothing really high-end. Roland, Yamaha, and Casio have some nice controllers, but the higher-end models aren’t dedicated to the task, and therefore there’s no way to dedicate all your dollars to the controller itself. (Dig deeper, and there’s still more sacrifices to make – yes, you can have x, but then we take away y…) My short list would probably be Doepfer’s lovely keyboard in a road case and Studiologic – and that’s about it.</p>
<p>Studiologic’s new Numa Nero, therefore, looks like the serious controller a lot of us have been waiting for. It’s a full, 88-note keyboard made for serious musicians. Yes, part of it is plastic, but plastic doesn’t necessarily mean “cheap” – good-quality plastic can be more durable than other materials. And the design itself finally focuses on getting you the best-possible keybed and action, assuming your software will take care of the sound generation.</p>

<ul>
<li>Graded hammer action (essential for piano players, as it makes the lower end heavier than the higher end)</li>
<li>The last key mechanism design by late Fatar founder/designer Lino Ragni</li>
<li>Double-dipped, “full-body” solid black keys – <em>not</em> hollow black keys. (The press release points out that most digital pianos have hollow keys, which is something I can verify. Unless you play in C major all the time, this is a major problem.)</li>
<li>20 dynamic curve settings which “sense” playing in real-time and respond accordingly. It sounds like the piano action equivalent of anti-lock brakes; I have to try it to understand what they mean!</li>
<li>4 zones with independent velocity curves, MIDI, program, pedal, and control settings</li>
<li>Two pedal inputs, plus an illuminated side wheel controller. (The side is an unusual place for a wheel, but I could still see being able to reach it live.)</li>

<p>Now, what’s missing from all of this is a control surface, which bothered me initially – you don’t, for instance, get faders to use as drawbars. Upon reflection, though, I actually think having all that empty space is a huge advantage. If you’re an organ player, you can add a drawbar controller. If you’re controlling unusual instruments, you could add a touchscreen-equipped laptop. Or add a monome. You get the idea.</p>
<p>And the best feature of all may be this: “An aluminum back piece slides out to support another keyboard, sound module, or laptop, without the need for another stand.”</p>
<p>No, my only remaining gripe is that, while the keyboard supports aftertouch, it’s monophonic aftertouch, not polyphonic. Poly aftertouch seems to be a dying breed, but it would certainly have qualified this keyboard as “ultimate.” I’m nonetheless dying to play the Numa Nero. I’ve been waiting a long time for a worthy controller that <em>doesn’t</em> try to make sounds or arrange beats for you or do anything other than talk to your software setup, and this could be it.</p>
<p>US$1274, which goes to prove my point – focus entirely on the controller, and you can keep the cost low without compromise. Weight: 57.3 ponds.</p>
<p>There’s also a 22-pound <a href="http://www.fatar.com/Studiologic/Pages/NUMANANO.html">Numa Nano</a> coming at winter NAMM; keep your eyes out for that one – if it could be just as brilliantly-designed but more liftable, it could be the perfect companion, a nano on the road and a Nero back in the studio (or when you’ve got transport).</p>

<p>And yes, it’s worth considering the entire <a href="http://www.fatar.com/Studiologic/Pages/intro_cat.htm">Studiologic range</a>. Ironically, the line they call “vintage” is the one with lots of added controls. They’re absurdly cheap for the quality, have action that can beat most of the pricier options out there, and immensely logical designs that pack maximum playability into the weight and form factor. The designs are, charitably, “workmanlike,” but if it’s more playable, who cares? I also understand they’re easy to service. Now, the only remaining question is why the Italian-based Studiologic seems to be so alone in getting this area right.</p>

<p>Native Instruments released a slew of soft synth updates today – thanks to everyone who sent this in. The big news is that Absynth, the alien-sounding synth that has become a darling of sound designers, gets a big update. But with so much to cover, here’s the in-a-nutshell version so you can grok it all in one place.</p>
<p>The other big news – Komplete’s price is down to EUR499/US$559, with cheaper upgrade pricing to match. That makes the suite much more aggressive, and certainly as far as software instruments, as much as you can get in any one box, anywhere, for that amount of change. It’s not all good news, though – there were some cuts of instruments from the lineup. <strong>Correction: These products are in fact discontinued.</strong> Pro-53, Akoustik Piano, and B4 II are being terminated, though unlike the previous vocoder and spectral delay, it sounds as though the replacement is effectively sample libraries in Kontakt.</p>
<p><strong>Disclaimer: </strong>I’m reading this from a press release and peppering it with what either might be considered my expansive experience and finely-honed instincts <em>or</em>, in technical terms, “randomly made-up speculation.” Less <em>review</em>, more <em>fauxview</em>. Expect more once we’ve used these in the flesh.</p>

<p>The synth Jim Aikin once described to me as a “rabbit hole” has just gotten deeper. New in this release:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Supercomb filter</strong> for “physical-modeling-type” sounds – think exquisite new resonance. </li>
<li><strong>Cloud filter</strong> for granular-based modulation. </li>
<li><strong>Filter feedback paths</strong> for “gritty” “unpredictable” …well, you know, filter feedback. </li>
<li>“<strong>Aetherizer” </strong>for breaking up and rearranging sound particles, apparently derived from granular models but implemented in an unusual way. </li>
<li><strong>More presets</strong>, in case you want a guide exploring the stuff above. </li>
<li><strong>Mutator </strong>for morphing presets based on musical keywords – an alternative way of navigating presets. </li>
</ul>
<p>Those new filters and processors sound really extraordinary to me. I have a small selection of “desert island” synths. Absynth might qualify for when you move to a different planet.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Kontakt 4</h3>
<p>Here’s a surprise. You see, Native Instruments only updated its flagship sampler to <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/07/16/kontakt-battery-enhanced-more-compatible-64-bit-memory/">3.5 as recently as July</a>. That was no minor update, either, featuring 64-bit memory support (on Windows) and greater 32-bit memory (up to 32 GB on Mac), plus improved from-disk streaming, multi-core support, MIDI learn, and other enhanced features and compatibility. In less than a month and a half, they’re back to announce version 4.</p>
<p>And it does sophisticated live convolution of samples. Somewhere, someone is thinking of realistic purposes for that. I’m thinking Absynth may have company on that alien planet.</p>

<li><strong>Authentic Expression Technology (AET)&#160; </strong>What? A process that mimics authentic instruments – with an obscure acronym to match? Is NI channeling Roland? AET isn’t quite like anything I’ve heard before, with a “phase-corrected convolution” based on an analysis of the original acoustic instrument sample. (In other words, it squishes your sample together with the analyzed behavior of a real-world instrument.) It’s a unique-sounding process, and one I’d love to hear warped to unusual sound design purposes – not just faking real instruments, but inventing new ones. </li>
<li><strong>Vowel morphing for choirs. </strong>(Yeah, see what I just said? You’re going to want to route synths through AET, too, aren’t you?) </li>
<li><strong>A sampled Mellotron.</strong> </li>
<li><strong>Sample compression </strong>to save on resources – without losing audio fidelity or taxing the CPU, says NI. </li>
<li><strong>Multi Scripts</strong> for Kontakt scripting users. </li>
<li><strong>A new sound browser with “more musical” terms</strong>. </li>
<li><strong>A stack of belgian waffles, dripping in syrup. </strong>(Okay, I made that one up. Mmmmm… waffles.) </li>
</ul>

<h3>Guitar Rig 4 (Pro and otherwise)</h3>
<p>Where do you go in a crowded guitar emulation market, with a package that’s already crammed with sound tools? NI has chosen to focus on the speakers/cabinet/mic. There’s more talk of convolution – here, “latency-free” convolution – but I know NI’s tools often use different techniques for the different products, which means this may not be exactly what’s showing up in Kontakt; more on that once I find out exactly what they’ve done. New in “Pro”:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Advanced cabinet, mic modeling: </strong>NI says they’ve applied latency-free convolution in order to get more precise models from their software. (Well, okay, digital processes inherently add latency, so let’s assume extreme-low-latency). </li>
<li><strong>Control Room mic + cabinet matching: </strong>Other guitar amp emulations do effectively this – there are some simple combinations in Apple’s new Logic 9, most recently. But NI says that, again, their technology is special, with phase-aligned studio mics for each cabinet and work by German guitar and recording guru Peter Weihe. </li>
<li><strong>New tube amps: “</strong>Hot Plex,” “Jump.” </li>
<li><strong>Two new delays, two new reverbs</strong>. </li>
<li><strong>Dedicated master effects section.</strong> </li>
<li><strong>True-stereo processing throughout the signal chain.</strong> </li>
<li><strong>Better sound quality for pitch-based effects.</strong> </li>
<li><strong>More host automation, controller assignment.</strong> </li>
<li>Use the <strong>Rig Kontrol 3 pedal board</strong> as a MIDI controller with anything you like. </li>
</ul>
<p>That’s just the flagship; some updates apply across the range to other packaged versions of the Guitar Rig line, with different sets of features and hardware that are a bit too complex to compare now.</p>
<h3>Komplete 6</h3>
<p>For those keeping score at home, here’s what you get if you prefer the whole box.</p>

<p>The full Komplete package is now just US$559/EUR499.</p>
<p>So, what got cut:</p>
<ul>
<li>Akoustic Piano </li>
<li>B4 II </li>
<li>PRO-53 </li>
</ul>
<p>These three products are in fact discontinued. Pro-53 was a bit out of place in the suite, it&#8217;s true, and looking (and sounding) long in the tooth; NI is generally more about creating new synths than emulating old ones. The B4 and Akoustik Piano, though, I think are going to be missed. Akoustik Piano has some great piano samples and controls that aren&#8217;t really replaced by the piano samples in Kontakt. And while the C-3 samples in Kontakt sound terrific, you miss out on the variations and sound design options in B4 II. I&#8217;m guessing someone may be passionate about that, seeing as how they&#8217;re <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/08/25/gorgeous-full-sized-hammond-b3-controller-for-native-instruments-b4/">handcrafting full-sized controllers for it with custom stops and DIY electronics just to play it</a>. It sounds like the direction is toward sampling, though, so perhaps we&#8217;ll see some additions in the Kontakt sample library to compensate for these omissions. Meanwhile, if you&#8217;ve already got these products, you can hang onto them.</p>
<p>I still think this gives Komplete an extra edge. And let’s not lose the real story here – <em>real time convolution and crazy filtering in Absynth</em>. I’ll sleep on that.</p>
<p>Oh yeah, and iPhone apps? Cool, but when you want to put more supercomputer-style processing on your tracks, your desktop computer is still your friend. </p>

Electronics were prototyped with the open source <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/">Arduino</a> platform and implemented with electronics from <a href="http://www.doepfer.de/">Doepfer</a>, then finished with manuals (that’s “keys” for you non-organists) from <a href="http://www.fatar.com/">Fatar</a> (as seen in Nord’s organs). Authentic-style drawbars finish the project. <em><strong>Correction:</strong> I got my wires crossed and originally claimed this had Fatar drawbars, but it&#8217;s Fatar manuals. Thanks to comments for spotting that.</em></p>
<p>The integration of the hardware design with the B4 is extraordinary: the creator notes that every single function is perfectly replicated, so you never have to touch a mouse or look at a screen. Of course, you can then make meticulous models tweaked on the B4 software that wouldn’t have been possible on the original hardware – and this hardware, while substantial, should be dramatically lighter.</p>

<p>Normally, pricing announcements and sales press releases bore me to tears, but this is actually news &#8211; Native Instruments is selling Komplete for July only at just US$/EUR 399, instead of $1139/EUR999. </p>
<p>That means if you were looking for Reaktor <em>alone</em> &#8211; about as good a desert island music software choice as you can find &#8211; this would be a good deal. You also get Absynth, the absurdly deep (if sometimes baffling) synth with surround sound envelopes and a workflow that could change how you think about sound, the very nice effects and loop recording in Guitar Rig, and the scriptable sampler Kontakt, as well as the Battery drum sampler and lovely Massive synth. </p>
<p>As recession specials go, this is a tough one to beat.</p>

<p>Fans of the Nintendo DS may have been immune to the siren song of Nintendo&#8217;s tweaked DSi model. Unfortunately, I have a feeling a bunch of you are about to upgrade your handheld game system. Why? Because the folks at AQ Interactive are doing an upgraded version of the DS-10 software synth for the game platform, now on the DSi. <a href="http://the-palm-sound.blogspot.com/2009/06/korg-ds-10-plus.html">Palm Sounds gets the scoop</a>.</p>
<p>New in this version:</p>
<ul>
<li>Twice the analog synths (4 of them, instead of 2)</li>
<li>Twice the drum machines (8 instead of 4)</li>
<li>Twice the tracks (12 instead of 6)</li>
<li>Expanded song mode: programmable track mute, realtime editing (that is, edit parameters <em>inside</em> the song mode</li>
</ul>
<p>They&#8217;re also announcing distribution through retailers. The new features appear to be platform-specific &#8212; that is, all this doubling business appears to be thanks to the greater horsepower of the DSi. My guess &#8211; though this is unconfirmed &#8211; is that if you can get this for the pre-DSi DS, you won&#8217;t be able to switch to the &#8220;Dual Mode.&#8221; The other slight disappointment is that it doesn&#8217;t sound as though online features or collaborative features have been enhanced. On the other hand, AQ is promising that they&#8217;ll be in brick-and-mortar retailers, not the online-only distribution they had on the original. I&#8217;m hopeful that may also mean distribution outside the US &#8212; either for an online DSi purchase, perhaps, or for the cartridge. (The DSi still supports physical carts &#8211; hence the mention of retailers.)</p>
<p>The best part of all of this, though, is watching Nobuyoshi Sano &#8211; the composer/arranger behind Namco games like Ridge Racer and Tekken &#8211; do a Steve Jobs keynote impression.</p>

<p>Anyway, the mobile software revolution continues. There’s so much stuff out there that it can actually be hard to track. Here’s a round-up to help you navigate everything that’s going on this week.</p>
<p>And even if you can’t stand another word about the iPhone, consider this: the explosion of iPhone software, more than just a fad, illustrates what happens when you give developers tools to make multimedia capabilities easier, then provide a distribution outlet. I don’t love everything about the iTunes approach, but those are lessons that could easily be learned in desktop and mobile development alike. The iPhone platform, if nothing else, is surprisingly uncompromising in the sound and visual interaction departments, especially for a mobile platform. And even desktop platforms could benefit from this kind of distribution mechanism (see also: Steam for games).</p>
<p>Also, we do have some of the first signs that the iPhone won’t be alone for long – new functionality on Google’s Android could take that platform in new directions. See my next story, Android/Linux/open source fans.</p>
<p><strong>Disclaimer: don’t worry. </strong>I’m not giving up on desktop apps. Relax. In fact, even now as I look across these applications, while there are lots of cool ideas, it’s still clear this is a nascent area. The experience is nowhere near as rich as you get on the desktop. But it’s nonetheless worth exploring some of the ideas before we return to our (more powerful) desktop applications for music.</p>

<h3>Field Recording, Microphones for iPhone + iPod touch</h3>

<p>The big news this week was FiRe, which promises to be the “first professional field recorder” for the iPhone and iPod touch. The developer behind it is one of which we’re already big fans: Audiofile Engineering. AE make Wave Editor, which has rapidly become the secret weapon of choice for Mac audio producers and sound designers, as well as the batch-processing Sample Manager and adoptive parents of the excellent Rax plug-in host. Anything these guys do would get our attention, and then they go and add specs you wouldn’t expect to see on the iPhone:</p>
<ul>
<li>Accurate real-time waveform display </li>
<li>Live, touch-controlled waveform navigation </li>
<li>Audio markers </li>
<li>Broadcast WAVE metadata </li>
<li>Instant downloading in multiple formats – and easy sharing via FTP, Web server, or even a SoundCloud account </li>
<li>Tag recordings with location data </li>
<li>Overdub mode </li>
<li>VU meters for input and output </li>
<li>Configurable time units </li>
<li>Mic flexibility: use Blue Mikey, Alesis ProTrack or even the internal mic </li>
</ul>

<p>Let’s just cut straight to it: this is, bar none, the most full-featured app out there. It’s the first one that would make me seriously consider using this platform for recording.</p>
<p>This, of course, raises the question of which mic you might want to use.</p>
<p>If you’re on the iPod touch, you don’t have even a built-in mono mic. (Don’t knock it: I’ve put together entire pieces based on simple mono mic samples. Creative sampling artists will use <em>anything</em>.)</p>
<p>Even on the first-generation iPod touch, you can use some simple solutions that will let you do basic sound.</p>

<p>The Smule blog has a terrific round-up of recommendations for touch owners wanting to use their Ocarina app. Their technical needs are much lighter than what you might need for FiRe, but this is still worth a look if you have any interest in recording at all:</p>

<p>The Griffin SmartTalk wins out for 2G owners. I have Griffin’s TuneBuds mobile, which has worked well enough for applications like RjDj. (Note that Smule have managed to get their app working with the first-gen hardware; FiRe requires the newer generation.)</p>
<p>At the fancier end:</p>

<p>Blue Microphones’ <a href="http://www.bluemic.com/products/mikey">Mikey</a> is a slim-line stereo condenser capsule that plus into the iPod accessory port. It’s hinged so you can play with placement at least a little, and there’s basic gain control (3 settings). It runs about US$80 street, which means it doesn’t have to compete with standalone recorders. <strong>Update: Audiofile Engineering </strong>say they’ve seen some issues with FiRe and Blue Mikey, and can’t officially support the combination. Readers have had some issues themselves. If you’ve already got a Mikey, this might be worth a try, but otherwise, you can await updated information as Blue and Audiofile Engineering attempt to address the problem.</p>
<p><strong>Specific update: </strong>The problem sounds as though it is the combination of the production Mikey with second-generation iPod touch units running the current OS. This is expected to be fixed with the next OS release. Stay tuned for more.</p>

<p>Tha <a href="http://www.alesis.com/protrack">Alesis ProTrack</a> is even more impressive-looking, but at US$249 list, it does start to get into the realm of “you could just go buy a dedicated recorder.” The ProTrack extends the iPhone by adding a shell with an X/Y stereo mic pair – one that looks quite a lot like the Zoom H4 mics – and even has onboard XLR jacks and phantom power. You also get LED monitoring, a limiter, additional power (four AAA’s), a mic stand mount – basically, it turns your iPhone into a real mobile recorder.</p>
<p>The Alesis has its own app, but the Audiofile Engineering option is looking more powerful. Naturally, that’s the advantage of software – because the iPhone is essentially a computer, you can add whatever software you like.</p>

I’ve started testing the Zoom H4n, seen at right. (<em>Not</em> an iPhone hiding in a shell.) I’m already blown away – it corrects most of the navigation and quality issues with its predecessor, and unlike an iPod or iPhone, has fantastic battery life and onboard XLR input jacks. (Okay, the ProTrack does have XLR’s, so this is getting a little more interesting.) In other words, I’m not sure I’m giving up on dedicated recorders in favor of one of these yet. It’s still handy to have, though – and who says you can’t use both, given how essential it can be to have a backup recording in many situations?</p>

<p>This one was a bit of a surprise: Paul Van Dyk has released a DJ app, but it’s <em>not</em> just a quick, attention-grabbing, “DJ on your iPhone” gimmick. It’s more like a utility belt for DJs. I’m surprised to see that as a result it’s actually gotten some criticism. To me, finding some genuinely useful stuff you might want to have on your mobile device is the whole point.</p>
<p>What’s in there?</p>
<ul>
<li>BPM counter </li>
<li>Frequency analyzer </li>
<li>Noise level (the “NYPD Application”), with an oddly beautiful visualization </li>
<li>Seismic reader (for testing your turntable, not for telling if there’s an earthquake happening – that you’ll probably figure for yourself) </li>

<p>NIN, of course, had their app become available on 4/14. There’s been quite a lot written about it – so much, in fact, that I feel like the whole thing is a bit overhyped. The basic development here is that NIN is taking all their fan data and making it location specific. On the upside, this is a lot more than many high-profile bands have done with iPhone development. But then, these guys should be doing more – they have the budget to hire real developers. I do like the idea of fans being able to interact on their mobile device; that clearly makes a lot of sense. But few artists will inspire the kind of loyalty NIN does, which means the real question is, will someone be able to build a platform for everyone else? And if you are a more obscure artist, what should you be doing?</p>
<p>The app is free, so just a conduit for fans, really.</p>

<h3>Gestural Beat Sharing, Celebrate Cinco De Mayo</h3>

<p>ZoozBeat is the application I looked at in the fall: the idea is to make musical improvisation more accessible by allowing people to use fun gestures, taps, and the like to assemble beats. The software is not only for iPhone, but the powerful Nokia N95, too.</p>
<p>That story is worth checking out from the perspective of gestural music in general, not just iPhone or mobile apps:</p>

<p>The latest news: the guys have gotten funding, for one. More importantly to end users, ZOOZ Mobile is adding a sharing component, much like what we saw with Smule’s Leaf Trombone. New upgraded software adds a Latin component with Samba and Tejano rhythms and is ready-to-go for Cinco de Mayo. Sounds great to me – and the Latin market has been oddly ignored by a lot of musicians and developers. There are also new Pop, Hip-Hop, and Techno beats.</p>

<p>You’ve got plenty of faux-808 apps for the iPhone now. Our friend Henry Lowengard is taking a very different tack, with drone-friendly creations and detuned pianos. He describes this as well as I could, so here’s what he writes to tell us about. </p>

<p>The first version of Lake Piano is relatively minimal, Henry says, played as a double row of scrolling piano keys and the ambient sounds stolen from a videotape he recorded. Henry promises more playability and more ambience in an upcoming upgrade, but you’ll get that automatically when it’s done, so you can always go play now.</p>
