<p>This absolutely, positively &#8230; doesn&#8217;t help with that at all. (Happily, new desktop modular tools do, but&#8230; this is&#8230; also possible.)</p>
<p>And to those of you who say this seems impractical or silly, well, maybe you have five friends, and each of you has three Moogerfoogers, and you&#8217;ve wondered if you could ever form a band. Yes. Yes, you can.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a question so elemental in music, you might forget to ask it: what can you get out of a (music) jam?</p>
<p>Electronic music worldwide is dominated by the DJ, the dance party. That, in turn, often tends to the safe playback and mixing of produced records. So, what happens when you let all of that go, invite your audience to get up and make strange noises with you and not only dance at a safe distance? What happens when you just set yourself free and play?</p>
<p>Jam sessions are nothing new in and of themselves &#8211; but the beauty of them is, put unexpected combinations of musicians together in a room, and they can always be something new. Here, I&#8217;ve invited one set of guest reports authored by the Berlin-based collective <a href="http://mindpirates.org/verein/">Mindpirates</a>. Their recent set of jam sessions was notable in its varied international artists, covering the gamut from gong artist Jens Zygar to electronic artists like Machinedrum and Kid 606. Since you probably didn&#8217;t get to attend, you can experience the results through plenty of photos and videos they&#8217;ve shared with us. Californian <a href="http://lionelwilliams.com/">Lionel Williams</a>, grandchild of film composer John Williams, provides the backdrop for all of this with otherworldy, psychedelic imagery. For that reason, perhaps, the Mindpirates get happily far-out in their reflections on what all of this means, and dub the series &#8220;an adventure into the supernatural power of the jam.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what the Mindpirates&#8217; Easton West, Owen Roberts and Pauline Doutreluingne, tell CDM about the event and what it&#8217;s meant to them:</p>

<blockquote><p>In January, we opened our new project space, Mindpirates Projektraum, with &#8220;Let The Sun Shine In — The Berlin Sessions.&#8221; The event included an exhibition of the supernatural collage art from the young California-based artist and musician Lionel Williams. Knowing that Williams was also a talented musician, we decided to bless our new space with a week-long series of jams between Williams, special guests, and ourselves. </p>
<p>The guests included visual artist Manfred Kage, Jens Zygar, Raz Ohara and The Odd Orchestra, Annika Henderson &#038; Nick Henderson (from Anika), Hermione Frank aka rRoxymore, Jochen Arbeit (from Einstürzende Neubauten), Brian Mitchell aka 785, Valerie Renay (from Noblesse Oblige), Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum, Miguel De Pedro aka Kid 606, Verity Susman (from Electrelane), Infinite Livez, Michel Morin aka Sneak-Thief, Antaeus Roy aka Lando Kal and more.</p>
<p>Williams comes from a very musical background. His great-grandfather Johnny Williams was a respected jazz drummer and percussionist who played from the 30s to the 50s for the CBS Radio Orchestra, Raymond Scott, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey. His grandfather John Williams has written some of the most loved and recognized film music of all time. <em>Ed.: Yep, that John Williams.</em> Lionel’s father Mark Williams drummed with  Crosby, Stills and Nash, Tina Turner, and Air Supply.</p>
<p>Given the Williams family’s cross-generational success, one would expect Lionel to follow suit in his own musical endeavours. But there&#8217;s something of a sunchild in Williams that directs his varied creations. A fascination with the supernatural comes across in his artwork &#8212; abstract, yet suggestive windows into a mind filled with cosmic, mystic, and utopian images. Listening to his ambient electronic rock band Vinyl Williams, it&#8217;s apparent that Williams inhabits a slightly different artistic realm to his predecessors.</p>
<p>Jamming has always been an indispensable part of music-making across generations and cultures. The immediate connection people make when they combine sounds &#8212; instant, unplanned, and unrepeatable &#8212; is an incomparable experience. It allows humans to communicate in a language outside of words. The jam creates an opportunity to explore individual sounds and their relationships to one another. While exploring the relationships of tones, we explore our relationships to one another and to our environment. Improvisation demands an amount of personal development and discipline to open up the channels of communication that allow a group to function as one.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>From the frequency-drenched opening performance of gong master Jens Zygar and ground breaking visuals of microphotographer Manfred Kage, to the analog dance party rhythms of our friends Michel Morin aka Sneak Thief and Antaeus Roy aka Lando Kal, the week was wildly diverse with approaches to sound, pitch, rhythm, color and texture and from a wide variety of sources.</p>
<p>For us, the main interest in the improvisations was a constantly-evolving relationship between acoustic instruments and digital music technology. This tension was really visible watching the performances. Williams spent a large part of the week hunched over a dizzying collection of guitar pedals while, next to him, he gathered an even more dizzying collection of musical and percussive instruments, effects and processors. Mindpirates became a melting pot of sound, color, movement, and voices, as seen in our film documentation.</p>
<p>Behind everything lay the real pool of inspiration, the seemingly-infinite timbral, rhythmic, and textural possibilities from a relatively small group of attuned musicians. The representation of the supernatural in The Berlin Sessions was achieved by both the organic and digital and the aural and visual. Never was it discernible where a sound began, where it was processed or the nature of that processing. All is One — a beautiful and mystical message realized through the jams.</p></blockquote>

<p>It&#8217;s a collision between a twenty-first century tablet and some of the most iconic analog instruments ever produced. It&#8217;s MIDI and digital meeting up with control voltage and analog. It&#8217;s our friend Chris Stack, endeavoring to find the path that allows him to take the best pieces of his studio and put them together, pushing all that gear to its limits and finding a sum that exceeds the parts. In short, it&#8217;s music making, how a soloist can make an ensemble out of their tools. On <a href="http://ExperimentalSynth.com">ExperimentalSynth.com</a>, Chris has been very interesting indeed. But it&#8217;s nice to pull together a few of these recent episodes to get a sense of the larger theme.</p>
<p>First, let&#8217;s have a look at Moog&#8217;s Animoog synth as it&#8217;s crossed with the Moog Voyager. Now, some will recall my original criticism of Animoog and iOS synths in general was the lack of tactile feedback on the iPad. But that makes Animoog&#8217;s support of MIDI significant. And put these instruments together with your hardware instruments, and something very different happens. (I find it interesting that the most active users of Animoog I&#8217;ve met all have it as an addition to a conventional hardware studio &#8211; it&#8217;s all pieces of the puzzle.)</p>
<p>Chris tells us this video has gotten an especially-enthusiastic response. The video demonstrates &#8220;some of the many possibilities when using the Moog Voyager as a MIDI controller for the Moog Animoog app and feeding the iPad audio back into the Voyager&#8217;s filter.&#8221;</p>

<p>But that&#8217;s just one direction to go with combinations of gear. Here&#8217;s a look at what happens when you augment a synth with outboard effects, also in this case from Moog Music. Chris writes:</p>

<p>One thing you get out of computing platforms versus analog gear is worlds of sound that are impossible in the analog domain. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s especially nice to see Chris combine csGrain, the out-there granular effect in Csound&#8217;s new incarnation on the iPad, with a Moog guitar:</p>

<p>But just as with desktop computers, a terrific role for mobile and tablets, particularly the MIDI-equipped iPad, is as a sequencer. The tablet interface becomes as natural an editing and composition tool as the gear is for tweaking and performance. Chris offers:</p>
<blockquote><p>Here&#8217;s a really quick and dirty one I shot on my Droid while playing. It is on my other YouTube channel. Here I used the Koushion app to sequence the LP. The LP has the CV Out Upgrade so I sent the Pitch CV to the CP-251 which inverted it, then sent it to control the Voyager&#8217;s filter cutoff. As the LP note goes up, the Voyager Filter Cutoff goes down. This was all tied together through Ableton which was sending the same clock to a Line 6 Echo Pro so all the echos were synced to the same clock&#8230;</p></blockquote>

<p>Of course, there&#8217;s a strong Moog Music emphasis in all these videos, but they all demonstrate more broadly where the productive overlaps of digital and analog can lie, adaptable to much humbler rigs and combinations. </p>

<p>What would you want in your pocket for DJing? How about some key recognition and tracking, key mixing aid, BPM tap &#8212; and a flashlight (torch)?</p>
<p>For the DJ who cares about mixing songs together in key and precise tracking of BPM, automatic recognition may just not cut it. One DJ and developer, Pete Simpson, decided to solve that problem &#8211; and like a lot of software ideas, initially built that solution for himself. He turns the ever-popular iPhone into a handheld, pocketable companion for DJ sets. I asked Pete to explain not only what the software does, but what it means in his DJ workflow. </p>
<p>Whether you&#8217;re obsessive about mixing in key or new to some of these ideas, the answers reveal what this app might do for you, as well as how Pete DJs. (I can also imagine this being useful to remixers tracking a lot of tunes, as well as DJs.) Pete writes:<span id="more-23686"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve recently published an app for the iPhone called DJ Tools. It is something I wrote for myself maybe a year ago, and I use it so much, I thought it might be useful for others. I found automatic key recognition software to be too inaccurate for my needs. D JTechTools did a recent article, and their tests [found] between 20%-40% accuracy for the three products tested. I also note that Beatport and other sites supplying key information seem to use the same automatic software to do so.</p>

<p>I used to key my own songs with a synth to act like a tuning fork. I wrote an app that does the same, in effect: it will play a chord from any of the 24 major and minor diatonic scales so you can compare with a song you&#8217;re listening to. It has a standard tap BPM button. It also displays the other musical keys that will mix with the selected key with the least number of discordant notes (based on the circle of fifths). It gives the standard music notation and the key code notation used by some DJ software. I put a torch on it &#8212;  bit random I know &#8212; but I always forget to bring one, and end up groping around plugging my kit into mixers in the dark. [That's a flashlight, for you fellow Yankees.]</p>
<p>Its a niche app, but I think DJs who are already manually keying their new tracks could find it useful.</p></blockquote>
<p>So, how does he use it, in practice?</p>
<blockquote><p>I use tool primarily when I buy music. I will get the tunes into my DJ rig, and play the first tune. I move the track to a part of the music score that has easily identifiable tonal information (a melody line, or bass line) and compare the tune playing to one of the tunes played by hitting the key buttons on the app.</p>
<p>Once I&#8217;ve identified the musical key I&#8217;ll tap the screen to get an accurate estimate of the song tempo which I use to warp the track.</p>
<p>Once done, I&#8217;ll mark the key in my tune&#8217;s metadata. Once complete, I don&#8217;t need to use the tool (I know the circle of fifths) but if I didn&#8217;t I can also use the tool to inform me of harmonic keys that will match the key I&#8217;m pressing. For example, I&#8217;m spinning a track in A Major, I know the most harmonious key would also be A Major but I would like to shift into another key (I have a lot more songs in other keys, and I&#8217;m running out of A Major). So, I press the A Major button and the display informs me that the keys E Major, F Sharp Minor, and D Major all share similar harmonic frequencies and will blend smoothly without disharmony.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s about all there is to it. It is a tool for DJs with a basic music training or understanding, who wish to add more depth to their sets by actively considering the keys the tracks are in and mixing coherent keys with it.</p>
<p>The technique sounds great, most decent DJs already do this subconsciously. There are a couple of tutorials on my website that explain the theory and how to use the tool. I&#8217;m working on writing more articles but also run a full time job and DJ when I can, so time is precious!</p></blockquote>

<p>The abundance of music, and the preceived ease of producing it, comes to some as bad news &#8211; or even harbinger of apocalypse. But load up a craft with quantity, and quality is what stands out.</p>
<p>Francis Prève is a perfect Renaissance producer. With years of experience as a music technology journalist and sound designer, his own, signature flavor of tech-house is uniquely focused on timbre. His label, <a href="www.academikrecords.com">Academik Records</a>, debuted last year at Austin&#8217;s South by Southwest, but it&#8217;s just now kicking into high gear. (If you are in Austin for the world&#8217;s best known week of music, be sure to check in on the second party, running downtown from afternoon past midnight, for free.) Sure, a city like Berlin is associated with such things, but in the Internet age, Texas works just as well &#8211; minus the vitamin D deficiency.</p>

<p>Francis has rounded up a gang of emerging and known artists for Academik, and while age range and style are loose &#8211; sometimes dubstep, sometimes tech-house &#8211; what those signees have in common is attention to detail. They&#8217;re a veritable faculty in how to use Ableton Live and Massive so that you don&#8217;t sound like everyone else who&#8217;s using Ableton Live and Massive just because everybody else happens to be using Ableton Live and Massive.</p>
<p>The output is nicely represented in a podcast, mixed by Francis, that very much embodies his style:<br />

Now, disclosure: I&#8217;ve known Francis for a long time, as a colleague at <em>Keyboard</em>. But it&#8217;s partly because I know him that I have a sense of that quality of attention to detail &#8211; because we&#8217;ve spent countless hours discussing the fine points of synth design and production technique, because he&#8217;ll call me up to talk about some particular I happened to mention writing, because he even spent hours with me and James Grahame talking about the exact organization of knobs and switches on the MeeBlip. I figure part of my responsibility in this world is to get to know people like that really well. (It happens to be a lot of fun, too.)</p>

<h3>Analog+Digital, Hardware+Software</h3>
<p>One ongoing discussion has been ways of bringing in a few, select pieces of beloved hardware into a software studio. Even before talking about sound, the motivation is clear: it can make music making a lot more rewarding. And we&#8217;re not talking wildly-expensive modular setups, either &#8211; even inexpensive offerings like the KORG MonoTribe can get in on the action.</p>
<p>A lot of people working with software aren&#8217;t clear on just how to make hardware and software integrate nicely. Francis wrote a really comprehensive article on that subject, using his own rig as the subject, for <em>Keyboard</em> recently.</p>
<p>He writes about the process of using Live&#8217;s brilliant &#8211; and sometimes underused &#8211; External Instrument and External Effect devices:</p>
<blockquote><p>The first order of business was to create custom devices in Live for sending MIDI to a specific synth—for example, the <a href="http://www.moogmusic.com/products/phattys/slim-phatty">Phatty</a>—then routing its audio output back into that same device via the MOTU [UltraLite Mk. 3 audio] interface. I then saved the results as presets. Thus, when the laptop is docked, all I have to do is drag the device I’d created for the Phatty into a track, and the Phatty comes online&#8230;</p>
<p>The next thing I did was create an External Audio Effect device that sent audio to a device but didn’t receive any audio back &#8230; by setting it up to send audio but not receive, I can drop it at the end of an instrument chain within an Instrument Rack and send any soft synth into the Moog, SEM, Dark Energy, or Monotribe. From there, the combined analog-plus-soft-synth audio runs from the analog synth back into a free input on the MOTU, to be recorded in Live.</p>
<p>By doing this, I can use Operator, Razor, Kontakt or any soft synth as the “oscillator bank” for one of my analog synths. The whole of digital tone generation combined with the warmth and fuzz of analog filters and the snap of analog envelopes is far more than the sum of its parts.</p></blockquote>
<p>Francis also describes &#8220;hybrid&#8221; devices, combining Ableton instruments like Operator with outboard ingredients like the Moog Little Phatty filter and amp &#8212; all while controlling modulation and step sequences and such on the hardware with MIDI and Live clip envelopes. (He even talks about how to tame the MonoTribe, despite its &#8211; cough &#8211; lack of MIDI.)</p>

<h3>Free Sounds</h3>
<p>Apart from being a producer, Francis has long been a sound designer, working for the likes of Roland and Ableton His free-sampling, hardware-loving, sound design-addicted spirit has been gradually developing a vast selection of free sample packs on his blog. Some come from software (NI&#8217;s Razor), some from new hardware (Moog&#8217;s aforementioned Slim Phatty), and some from oddities (my favorite being the Mattel Synsonics drum machine toy). </p>
<p>But whereas the Academik Records music will be dependent on your personal taste and aesthetic, here these are sound packs that are versatile enough to bend to your will and needs, and to produce something very different from what anyone else might produce. And that, ultimately, is the point.</p>

<p>Sound and light artist, guitarist, Max patcher, and all-around sonically-fascinating guy <a href="http://christopherwillits.com/">Christopher Willits</a> has opened up his &#8220;Tiger Flower Circle Sun&#8221; record on Ghostly to remixing. Halfway through the project, we talk to Chris about what&#8217;s going on &#8211; and what the results so far sound like. And we share, from earlier this fall, a composition in which you can recharge.</p>
<p>The project begins not with stems, but with samples, the raw materials on which the album was based. Christopher walks CDM through the audio highlights, one sample at a time. Along the way &#8211; as with all these samples &#8211; you begin to appreciate the process by which Christopher makes his decisions, how he moves from samples like pieces of wood to the finished structure. And of course, by opening these up to remixing, you have an opportunity to hear the work differently in his finished, released form, as well as to find your own, distinct decision-making process. It&#8217;s perhaps obvious in a remix project, but what this does is to allow the sounds a life separate from the fixed set of decisions that produced the album.</p>
<p>And that can even change Christopher&#8217;s own view of the work, he says. He tells us:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think it&#8217;s fun to play the set like an album. I&#8217;ve heard these pieces so many times that it&#8217;s really refreshing to me to hear them alone. Now I hear the pieces differently.</p>
<p>That was actually one of the thoughts behind sharing all of these sounds, so people can hear the layers, and if they wish, tune their ears to the subtleties and intention I wanted to create in the mixes.</p></blockquote>

<p>A lot of the samples are about variation of common materials, so there&#8217;s plenty to explore. Christopher tells us that just one sample &#8211; like this guitar solo &#8211; can take on very different meanings with different processing, heard in two variations.</p>

<blockquote><p>This tone is created from a custom-made Big Muff > BOSS distortion > Fender Twin with a couple power tubes removed for low volume and max distortion. This is a trick that ted from Flipper showed me around that time, and it created the exact orange laser beam i was hearing in my imagination.</p></blockquote>

<p>The whole piece &#8220;Plant Body&#8221; came from this guitar improvisation. With releases like &#8220;Folding and the Tea&#8221; and &#8220;Seven Machines for Summer,&#8221; </p>
<blockquote><p>I set the process to be only the guitar recordings. With this release, I gave myself a new set of constraints and permissions, allowing my imagination to add whatever comes up for me. No judgement on which one is better to me, they are just different. There are infinite possibilities within any process I determine, yet discerning the process that resonates with my true intention is what creates the shapes and forms and colors that feel like love.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p><strong>Check your volume for this one</strong> &#8212; probably should have exported it at a lower volume for this set! The heat of this, the crushed distortion, is from a technique called input flipping on the SSL. This is an input flip with the preamps cranked, with odd harmonics.</p>
<p>Ryan (Ryan Kleeman) and I just about lost it when we first input flipped like this for a distorted sound. It became a theme in a sense that resonated with this orange laser beam electromagnetic sound that much of the work stems from.</p></blockquote>

<p>Another release from this year revealing Willits&#8217; musical approach, &#8220;GOLD&#8221; is an ambient piece in you can inhabit, in which you can restore yourself, according to its maker:</p>

<p>Made with voice, processed guitar, and a low-frequency oscillation out of a Nord Lead synth, Christopher actually encourages people to share how they &#8220;used&#8217; the piece and how they made it felt, a kind of design experiment for spiritual being in sound. <p>Revealing a deeper understanding of what sound means in our world, how it works as &#8220;currency&#8221; and &#8220;ghost,&#8221; Performance Artist Christine Sun Kim explores sonic media without the benefit of hearing. She finds how to make its presence more physical, to find greater dimensions of movement, and to make a personal connection beyond what most of us might find in the everyday sense. <blockquote><p>There are social norms surrounding sound that form our speech development and our way of handling sound with care. They&#8217;re so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without sound.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Cult photographer and filmmaker Todd Selby&#8217;s latest short is a revealing portrait of performance artist Christine Sun Kim. Deaf from birth, Kim turned to using sound as a medium during an artist residency in Berlin in 2008, and has since developed a practice of lo-fi experimentation that aims to re-appropriate sound by translating it into movement and vision. &#8220;It&#8217;s a lot more interesting to explore a medium that I don&#8217;t have direct access to and yet has the most direct connection to society at large,&#8221; says the artist. &#8220;Social norms surrounding sound are so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without it.&#8221; Selby filmed an exclusive performance from Kim in a Brooklyn studio as the artist played with field recordings of the street sounds of her Chinatown neighborhood, feedback and helium balloons, and made “seismic calligraphy” drawings from ink- and powder-drenched quills, nails and cogs dancing across paper to the vibrations of subwoofers beneath. Working with sound designer Arrow Kleeman, Selby carefully choreographed the film&#8217;s ambient score to reveal the Orange County native&#8217;s unique relationship with sound. &#8220;Her work deals with reclaiming sound because it&#8217;s a foreign world to her and one she&#8217;s not comfortable in,&#8221; explains Selby. &#8220;I wanted the film to act as an artistic conduit for her to tell her story to the world.”</p></blockquote>

<p>I was once a speaker at <a href="http://kadmusarts.com/festivals/1269.html">DEAF</a>, which stands for Dublin Electronic Arts Festival. Not thinking, I told the customs officer in Ireland that I was a musician attending the DEAF Festival. He had some cheeky comment. In this context, of course, what he took for granted can take on an entirely different meaning. If you have background in understanding accessibility and design, for people with different sense capabilities in vision and sound alike, I&#8217;d love to hear them. The world of sound technology most of us inhabit describes a very narrow range of expectations for vision and sight.</p>

<p>Sonic and musical inspiration are never far away, especially with a microphone in hand. For the latest example, Ableton Live meets a local playground.</p>
<p>Jason Richard, aka &#8220;bassling,&#8221; used field recordings in the park to compose a track. He writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve been recording playgrounds and remixing the sounds in Ableton Live to create tracks. To help people understand what they&#8217;re hearing, I&#8217;ve been making short videos showing some of the process. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s an idea I&#8217;ve had in mind for a while and the centenary is deadline to work towards. I&#8217;m inspired by the Italian Futurists and Alan Lamb, who mentored me in 2006 as part of the Unsound Festival.</p></blockquote>
<p>The playground is part of a series of videos of local playgrounds, intended to celebrate the 2012 centenary of Leeton in New South Wales, Australia. (That&#8217;s southeastern Australia, for the uninitiated.)</p>

<p>One of the smallest measures of time in the world is now the time that elapses between when Apple ships a new mobile product and someone has uploaded a video / album / feature film with it. It&#8217;s rather amazing. Somewhere, other tech vendors are &#8230; crying.</p>
<p>But that said, I think the video above is a wonderful thing. Perhaps the mobile smartphone is this generation&#8217;s new PortaStudio &#8211; something so readily accessible and portable that there&#8217;s really no excuse not to record a musical event when it happens. And however you do that I think is healthy.</p>
<p>So, in case you&#8217;re curious how a spare cable or adapter or two and a phone can be there &#8211; just in case someone forgot their laptop / ADAT machine / reel-to-reel deck &#8211; let&#8217;s just copy the full press release, as it&#8217;s told as a very nice, personal little story. And the music is sweet-hearted, too.</p>
<p>The app in question is Sonoma WireWorks&#8217; <a href="http://www.sonomawireworks.com/iphone/fourtrack/">FourTrack</a>.</p>
<p>CDM&#8217;s own Marsha Vdovin has her 4S and loves it, hopefully shooting with it a bit over at AES. I&#8217;m, meanwhile, hobbling along with my unlocked original G1 in Europe, so, uh, if any vendors want to buy me off, I&#8217;m game. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the other thing: while the iPad gets a lot of attention these days, our internal stats at CDM tell us many, many CDM readers have iPhones &#8211; and only a fraction of you have iPads. Little wonder: it&#8217;s easy to justify a smartphone, harder to justify a tablet on top of the laptop you probably already own.</p>
<p>But enough of that: let&#8217;s hear how they recorded. And reminisce about the days of the portable tape 4-track. (It worked for the likes of John Lennon.)<span id="more-21074"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been touring lately with Alexa James and thought my new song &#8220;Come Running to Me&#8221; would be a great song to sing with her. We started doing the song together on a recent tour in Europe, and people seemed to like the song. We took that as a cue to get a recording of it, and thought- why not the new iPhone 4S? Let&#8217;s see what it can do,&#8221; says Rory Partin, a Los Angeles based recording artist.</p>
<p>Rory pre-ordered his phone, and in thinking about how to approach the video, realized they would need a second phone. So this past Friday, iPhone 4S&#8217; release day, Alexa went at 5:30 am to camp out in the long line at the Apple store. Approaching the front of the line around 10am, she was almost in the store. But then AT&#038;T systems started to overload, and delayed her getting set up. Soon, Verizon and Sprint were also facing delays because of the great demand of the new iPhone 4S. Alexa was finally up and running around 1pm, and the recording began.</p>
<p>Sonoma Wireworks created an app called FourTrack which is the app Partin used for the recording process. Along with a learning curve of a new app itself, there was also the learning curve in how to best record into the app. &#8220;We spent hours,&#8221; says Partin, &#8220;recording guitars, keys and vocals using different microphones and plugging those directly into the phone because usually you can get a cleaner sound going direct (like you see in some shots of the video). But we found that we got the clearest and best sound just holding the phone near the instrument or voice. We couldn&#8217;t believe how much better it sounded to just use the built in mic that comes on the phone. So when our guitarist, Jeffrey Miles was recording his guitars, I literally stood next to him and held the phone over his shoulder. </p>
<p>To record my vocals, I was able to fit the iPhone 4S in between an open slot in the microphone clip on a mic stand, and I sang into that. Alexa was next to track vocals. By the time we got to her, it was 4am. I then re-recorded the keys. The three of us pulled an all-nighter, and left around 7am Saturday morning so i could go catch a plane.&#8221; </p>
<p>Mixing down the tracks was also an interesting process, as FourTrack iOS has, you guessed, it, four tracks. FourTrack iOS allows you to bounce tracks, so we were able to do several guitar tracks, mix them on the iPhone 4S, and then bounce them down into one track. You can then send those files to your laptop to make room for more tracking, as well as for back up and a final mix. We also used our MacBooks for final video edits for the sake of time. Alexa grins, &#8220;We obviously didn&#8217;t have fancy lighting or makeup artists, but the quality of the iPhone 4S to take video is quite amazing in spite of how I looked after a few hours of sleep and camping out at the Apple line.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>(Seriously, I do have concerns about toxic waste, human rights, and mineral extraction; that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m glad to see people making music with these tools and finding lasting, meaningful uses for them.)</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re having any issue getting through your Thursday, it&#8217;s tough to beat some proper, good techno &#8211; the kind of techno anyone can love, even if they keep shouting about how they &#8220;hate&#8221; it.</p>
<p>Techno pioneer Carl Craig is still going strong, the kind of artist whose work seems to flow freely. He&#8217;s got the roots, having begun with Derrick May in Detroit, but he&#8217;s remained a font of new work and invention since, mixing his work with live and jazz music and even endeavoring to introduce young people to new music through a self-started not-for-profit. (Check the cat&#8217;s <a href="http://www.carlcraig.net/about.html">bio</a>.) If you haven&#8217;t checked in with him lately, he&#8217;s touring &#8230; well, nearly everywhere, and is keeping the new sounds going through his Planet E label. Planet E turned ten earlier this year, accompanied by new a full-length and remix EPs, but here&#8217;s a quick test of what&#8217;s coming out of this label via SoundCloud.</p>

<p>I have Carl on the brain partly because I&#8217;ve learned King Britt (Saturn Never Sleeps) has new music with him. I owe King and SNS&#8217; Rucyl Mills a good weekend hiding out during Tropical Storm Irene, where I got in to see King&#8217;s workflow &#8211; mixing MIDI with CV triggers, Mono/Poly with Maschine, analog sequencing with Ableton Live. (We maintained power through the storm. Can I please evacuate to a chilled-out studio session more often? I&#8217;m a very, very blessed person, and believe me, I&#8217;m grateful for those gifts, those moments.)<span id="more-21059"></span></p>
<p>The resulting sound represents the best, most organic feel of the different generations we&#8217;ve seen of this music. Whereas once production was laborious, we now get to cherry-pick the most comfy tools, the looseness of live playing and analog gear twiddling and sequencing with the speed of a Maschine or Ableton setup on a laptop. And it comes out, with tracks that are improvisatory, relaxed, and naturally grooving. I think you can hear it in Carl&#8217;s new stuff, and I know I can hear it in King&#8217;s, having listened in and jammed as some things were made.</p>
<p>Remember handing burned CDs to DJs? In this case, Carl got hold of King&#8217;s tracks and King of Carl via email and Twitter.</p>
<p>For a glimpse, see the informal video. (I shot some video of King, too, but want to wait to get his and Rucyl&#8217;s word on their collaboration. Oh, and I need to, like, upload it. I&#8217;ll just ask my extensive video production department to&#8211; doh!)</p>

<p>King&#8217;s been doing this a long while, and his craft I feel is razor sharp, which lets him keep those tracks feel as loose as they do. He talks about how he tunes tracks in the mastering process on the Universal Audio blog. He definitely lets his UA fan side show, but he also gets loads of mileage out of some specific UA plugs &#8211; and the basic techniques here you can easily apply to any mastering plug-ins you like. (Readers recently brought up the excellent and underrated <a href="http://www.samplitude.com/en/">Samplitude</a>, which is also a good choice with its integrated mastering tools.)</p>
