<p>Sound and light artist, guitarist, Max patcher, and all-around sonically-fascinating guy <a href="http://christopherwillits.com/">Christopher Willits</a> has opened up his &#8220;Tiger Flower Circle Sun&#8221; record on Ghostly to remixing. Halfway through the project, we talk to Chris about what&#8217;s going on &#8211; and what the results so far sound like. And we share, from earlier this fall, a composition in which you can recharge.</p>
<p>The project begins not with stems, but with samples, the raw materials on which the album was based. Christopher walks CDM through the audio highlights, one sample at a time. Along the way &#8211; as with all these samples &#8211; you begin to appreciate the process by which Christopher makes his decisions, how he moves from samples like pieces of wood to the finished structure. And of course, by opening these up to remixing, you have an opportunity to hear the work differently in his finished, released form, as well as to find your own, distinct decision-making process. It&#8217;s perhaps obvious in a remix project, but what this does is to allow the sounds a life separate from the fixed set of decisions that produced the album.</p>
<p>And that can even change Christopher&#8217;s own view of the work, he says. He tells us:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think it&#8217;s fun to play the set like an album. I&#8217;ve heard these pieces so many times that it&#8217;s really refreshing to me to hear them alone. Now I hear the pieces differently.</p>
<p>That was actually one of the thoughts behind sharing all of these sounds, so people can hear the layers, and if they wish, tune their ears to the subtleties and intention I wanted to create in the mixes.</p></blockquote>

<p>A lot of the samples are about variation of common materials, so there&#8217;s plenty to explore. Christopher tells us that just one sample &#8211; like this guitar solo &#8211; can take on very different meanings with different processing, heard in two variations.</p>

<blockquote><p>This tone is created from a custom-made Big Muff > BOSS distortion > Fender Twin with a couple power tubes removed for low volume and max distortion. This is a trick that ted from Flipper showed me around that time, and it created the exact orange laser beam i was hearing in my imagination.</p></blockquote>

<p>The whole piece &#8220;Plant Body&#8221; came from this guitar improvisation. With releases like &#8220;Folding and the Tea&#8221; and &#8220;Seven Machines for Summer,&#8221; </p>
<blockquote><p>I set the process to be only the guitar recordings. With this release, I gave myself a new set of constraints and permissions, allowing my imagination to add whatever comes up for me. No judgement on which one is better to me, they are just different. There are infinite possibilities within any process I determine, yet discerning the process that resonates with my true intention is what creates the shapes and forms and colors that feel like love.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p><strong>Check your volume for this one</strong> &#8212; probably should have exported it at a lower volume for this set! The heat of this, the crushed distortion, is from a technique called input flipping on the SSL. This is an input flip with the preamps cranked, with odd harmonics.</p>
<p>Ryan (Ryan Kleeman) and I just about lost it when we first input flipped like this for a distorted sound. It became a theme in a sense that resonated with this orange laser beam electromagnetic sound that much of the work stems from.</p></blockquote>

Did I really think that&#8217;s what it needed, or did I just want to play my baritone along with this song for fun? The answer was the latter. <p>The ambient layers sample was to create more depth of field in the mix, have it floating behind at a low volume, but it was not doing was I wanted it to, so I cut it out.</p></blockquote>

<p>Another release from this year revealing Willits&#8217; musical approach, &#8220;GOLD&#8221; is an ambient piece in you can inhabit, in which you can restore yourself, according to its maker:</p>
<blockquote><p>GOLD is a 24 minute and 17 second sound bath / ambient piece to soak into. Listen, relax and recharge. This harmonic weaving of sound was created with the vibration of affinity, love. </p></blockquote>
<p>Made with voice, processed guitar, and a low-frequency oscillation out of a Nord Lead synth, Christopher actually encourages people to share how they &#8220;used&#8217; the piece and how they made it felt, a kind of design experiment for spiritual being in sound. <p>Revealing a deeper understanding of what sound means in our world, how it works as &#8220;currency&#8221; and &#8220;ghost,&#8221; Performance Artist Christine Sun Kim explores sonic media without the benefit of hearing. She finds how to make its presence more physical, to find greater dimensions of movement, and to make a personal connection beyond what most of us might find in the everyday sense. <blockquote><p>Cult photographer and filmmaker Todd Selby&#8217;s latest short is a revealing portrait of performance artist Christine Sun Kim. Deaf from birth, Kim turned to using sound as a medium during an artist residency in Berlin in 2008, and has since developed a practice of lo-fi experimentation that aims to re-appropriate sound by translating it into movement and vision. &#8220;It&#8217;s a lot more interesting to explore a medium that I don&#8217;t have direct access to and yet has the most direct connection to society at large,&#8221; says the artist. &#8220;Social norms surrounding sound are so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without it.&#8221; Selby filmed an exclusive performance from Kim in a Brooklyn studio as the artist played with field recordings of the street sounds of her Chinatown neighborhood, feedback and helium balloons, and made “seismic calligraphy” drawings from ink- and powder-drenched quills, nails and cogs dancing across paper to the vibrations of subwoofers beneath. Working with sound designer Arrow Kleeman, Selby carefully choreographed the film&#8217;s ambient score to reveal the Orange County native&#8217;s unique relationship with sound. &#8220;Her work deals with reclaiming sound because it&#8217;s a foreign world to her and one she&#8217;s not comfortable in,&#8221; explains Selby. &#8220;I wanted the film to act as an artistic conduit for her to tell her story to the world.”</p></blockquote>

<p>I was once a speaker at <a href="http://kadmusarts.com/festivals/1269.html">DEAF</a>, which stands for Dublin Electronic Arts Festival. Not thinking, I told the customs officer in Ireland that I was a musician attending the DEAF Festival. He had some cheeky comment. In this context, of course, what he took for granted can take on an entirely different meaning. If you have background in understanding accessibility and design, for people with different sense capabilities in vision and sound alike, I&#8217;d love to hear them. The world of sound technology most of us inhabit describes a very narrow range of expectations for vision and sight.</p>

<p>Sonic and musical inspiration are never far away, especially with a microphone in hand. For the latest example, Ableton Live meets a local playground.</p>
<p>Jason Richard, aka &#8220;bassling,&#8221; used field recordings in the park to compose a track. He writes:</p>
<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve been recording playgrounds and remixing the sounds in Ableton Live to create tracks. To help people understand what they&#8217;re hearing, I&#8217;ve been making short videos showing some of the process. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s an idea I&#8217;ve had in mind for a while and the centenary is deadline to work towards. I&#8217;m inspired by the Italian Futurists and Alan Lamb, who mentored me in 2006 as part of the Unsound Festival.</p></blockquote>
<p>The playground is part of a series of videos of local playgrounds, intended to celebrate the 2012 centenary of Leeton in New South Wales, Australia. (That&#8217;s southeastern Australia, for the uninitiated.)</p>

<p>One of the smallest measures of time in the world is now the time that elapses between when Apple ships a new mobile product and someone has uploaded a video / album / feature film with it. It&#8217;s rather amazing. Somewhere, other tech vendors are &#8230; crying.</p>
<p>But that said, I think the video above is a wonderful thing. Perhaps the mobile smartphone is this generation&#8217;s new PortaStudio &#8211; something so readily accessible and portable that there&#8217;s really no excuse not to record a musical event when it happens. And however you do that I think is healthy.</p>
<p>So, in case you&#8217;re curious how a spare cable or adapter or two and a phone can be there &#8211; just in case someone forgot their laptop / ADAT machine / reel-to-reel deck &#8211; let&#8217;s just copy the full press release, as it&#8217;s told as a very nice, personal little story. And the music is sweet-hearted, too.</p>
<p>The app in question is Sonoma WireWorks&#8217; <a href="http://www.sonomawireworks.com/iphone/fourtrack/">FourTrack</a>.</p>
<p>CDM&#8217;s own Marsha Vdovin has her 4S and loves it, hopefully shooting with it a bit over at AES. I&#8217;m, meanwhile, hobbling along with my unlocked original G1 in Europe, so, uh, if any vendors want to buy me off, I&#8217;m game. </p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the other thing: while the iPad gets a lot of attention these days, our internal stats at CDM tell us many, many CDM readers have iPhones &#8211; and only a fraction of you have iPads. Little wonder: it&#8217;s easy to justify a smartphone, harder to justify a tablet on top of the laptop you probably already own.</p>
<p>But enough of that: let&#8217;s hear how they recorded. And reminisce about the days of the portable tape 4-track. (It worked for the likes of John Lennon.)<span id="more-21074"></span></p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been touring lately with Alexa James and thought my new song &#8220;Come Running to Me&#8221; would be a great song to sing with her. We started doing the song together on a recent tour in Europe, and people seemed to like the song. We took that as a cue to get a recording of it, and thought- why not the new iPhone 4S? Let&#8217;s see what it can do,&#8221; says Rory Partin, a Los Angeles based recording artist.</p>
<p>Rory pre-ordered his phone, and in thinking about how to approach the video, realized they would need a second phone. So this past Friday, iPhone 4S&#8217; release day, Alexa went at 5:30 am to camp out in the long line at the Apple store. Approaching the front of the line around 10am, she was almost in the store. But then AT&#038;T systems started to overload, and delayed her getting set up. Soon, Verizon and Sprint were also facing delays because of the great demand of the new iPhone 4S. Alexa was finally up and running around 1pm, and the recording began.</p>
<p>Sonoma Wireworks created an app called FourTrack which is the app Partin used for the recording process. Along with a learning curve of a new app itself, there was also the learning curve in how to best record into the app. &#8220;We spent hours,&#8221; says Partin, &#8220;recording guitars, keys and vocals using different microphones and plugging those directly into the phone because usually you can get a cleaner sound going direct (like you see in some shots of the video). But we found that we got the clearest and best sound just holding the phone near the instrument or voice. We couldn&#8217;t believe how much better it sounded to just use the built in mic that comes on the phone. So when our guitarist, Jeffrey Miles was recording his guitars, I literally stood next to him and held the phone over his shoulder. </p>
<p>To record my vocals, I was able to fit the iPhone 4S in between an open slot in the microphone clip on a mic stand, and I sang into that. Alexa was next to track vocals. By the time we got to her, it was 4am. I then re-recorded the keys. The three of us pulled an all-nighter, and left around 7am Saturday morning so i could go catch a plane.&#8221; </p>
<p>Mixing down the tracks was also an interesting process, as FourTrack iOS has, you guessed, it, four tracks. FourTrack iOS allows you to bounce tracks, so we were able to do several guitar tracks, mix them on the iPhone 4S, and then bounce them down into one track. You can then send those files to your laptop to make room for more tracking, as well as for back up and a final mix. We also used our MacBooks for final video edits for the sake of time. Alexa grins, &#8220;We obviously didn&#8217;t have fancy lighting or makeup artists, but the quality of the iPhone 4S to take video is quite amazing in spite of how I looked after a few hours of sleep and camping out at the Apple line.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

<p>(Seriously, I do have concerns about toxic waste, human rights, and mineral extraction; that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m glad to see people making music with these tools and finding lasting, meaningful uses for them.)</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re having any issue getting through your Thursday, it&#8217;s tough to beat some proper, good techno &#8211; the kind of techno anyone can love, even if they keep shouting about how they &#8220;hate&#8221; it.</p>
<p>Techno pioneer Carl Craig is still going strong, the kind of artist whose work seems to flow freely. He&#8217;s got the roots, having begun with Derrick May in Detroit, but he&#8217;s remained a font of new work and invention since, mixing his work with live and jazz music and even endeavoring to introduce young people to new music through a self-started not-for-profit. (Check the cat&#8217;s <a href="http://www.carlcraig.net/about.html">bio</a>.) If you haven&#8217;t checked in with him lately, he&#8217;s touring &#8230; well, nearly everywhere, and is keeping the new sounds going through his Planet E label. Planet E turned ten earlier this year, accompanied by new a full-length and remix EPs, but here&#8217;s a quick test of what&#8217;s coming out of this label via SoundCloud.</p>

<p>I have Carl on the brain partly because I&#8217;ve learned King Britt (Saturn Never Sleeps) has new music with him. I owe King and SNS&#8217; Rucyl Mills a good weekend hiding out during Tropical Storm Irene, where I got in to see King&#8217;s workflow &#8211; mixing MIDI with CV triggers, Mono/Poly with Maschine, analog sequencing with Ableton Live. (We maintained power through the storm. Can I please evacuate to a chilled-out studio session more often? I&#8217;m a very, very blessed person, and believe me, I&#8217;m grateful for those gifts, those moments.)<span id="more-21059"></span></p>
<p>The resulting sound represents the best, most organic feel of the different generations we&#8217;ve seen of this music. Whereas once production was laborious, we now get to cherry-pick the most comfy tools, the looseness of live playing and analog gear twiddling and sequencing with the speed of a Maschine or Ableton setup on a laptop. And it comes out, with tracks that are improvisatory, relaxed, and naturally grooving. I think you can hear it in Carl&#8217;s new stuff, and I know I can hear it in King&#8217;s, having listened in and jammed as some things were made.</p>
<p>Remember handing burned CDs to DJs? In this case, Carl got hold of King&#8217;s tracks and King of Carl via email and Twitter.</p>

<p>King&#8217;s been doing this a long while, and his craft I feel is razor sharp, which lets him keep those tracks feel as loose as they do. He talks about how he tunes tracks in the mastering process on the Universal Audio blog. He definitely lets his UA fan side show, but he also gets loads of mileage out of some specific UA plugs &#8211; and the basic techniques here you can easily apply to any mastering plug-ins you like. (Readers recently brought up the excellent and underrated <a href="http://www.samplitude.com/en/">Samplitude</a>, which is also a good choice with its integrated mastering tools.)</p>

<p>From Björk this year has come two visions of how to make new instruments. The <em>Biophilia</em> software for iOS is an interactive rendition of the album. As apps, you have the curious separation of tracks into individual application icons, available as separate purchases or a bundle. But the effect is one we&#8217;ve traced for a while: the music becomes non-linear and interactive, blurring the line between recording as reproduction and dynamic instruments that can transform what you hear. Most notably, it also comes, via an update, with MIDI <a href="http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2011/10/12/is-bjorks-biophilia-the-first-album-with-midi-out/">as observed by Synthtopia</a>. MIDI allows you to then radically transform the output of what you get, and I agree that this is probably the first &#8220;album with MIDI output.&#8221; (The deeper question: are other sequencers in some sense someone else&#8217;s musical/compositional creation?)</p>
<p>In the Gameleste gamelan-celeste hybrid, you also have MIDI, here controlling an otherwise entirely acoustic instrument. (Create Acoustic Music!) Starting with a conventional celeste, the original instrument was &#8220;hacked&#8221; with hand-built bronze bars made by UK cymbalsmith Matt Nolan, then constructed into the finished instrument with MIDI by Icelandic organ builder Björgvin Tòmasson.</p>

<p>The videos themselves to me represent the spectrum of possible choice in instrument design on a whole number of levels &#8211; MIDI even being one fascinating such level.</p>

<p>Montreal-based Damian Taylor, music director and engineer for Björk, is the subject of an epic interview on cycling74.com, spanning music, life in Montreal, working with Björk and what makes her special, and what patching in Max/MSP can mean compositionally and creatively.</p>
<p>Damian has some especially nice reflections on what having an open-ended music environment can mean.</p>
<blockquote><p>If you’re a musician or composer, Max is an amazing tool that will really open up a completely different way of thinking about music. If you’ve been working on sequencers, looking at time lines, working on tape, or reading off musical scores, then without really realizing it you start looking at music in this very linear way and your brain gets formed into a lot of similar patterns.</p>
<p>But the Max environment provides this whole alternate way of thinking, a whole different flow. Suddenly your own ways of thinking about time and harmony and melodies and everything, expands completely. Music kind of changes shape, you see it from this whole different side. So it’s really, really, really, worth putting in the effort!</p></blockquote>
<p><span id="more-20871"></span></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a great and well-deserved endorsement for Max, but I think it&#8217;s deeper than than any one tool &#8212; this way of thinking could also be applied to tools like Pd, AudioMulch (saw a great workshop on that last week), Reaktor, or code-based languages like Csound and SuperCollider. Or, for that matter, I think this notion of thinking in non-linear ways can even be applied to playing your acoustic instrument. It really gets at the heart of how to unlock creativity, I think.</p>
<p>In case you&#8217;re afraid of Max or other languages, Damian has some advice there, as well:</p>
<blockquote><p>If you’ve never done any code or computer language programming before, there are a lot of times where you just have to try to absorb things without really knowing what the hell they are for. And I mean that in the nicest possible way!</p>
<p>I just slowly worked my way through all the tutorials, largely without understanding what the hell I was doing, but just absorbing what was going on, trying to follow every step that was presented. And yeah, it really was a case of locking myself in a room. If there was another noise anywhere, I just couldn’t do it. It took really intense concentration; just trying to absorb what was going on and follow a tutorial from start to finish.</p>
<p>But then at some point I figured I needed to speed things up, so I got in touch with Harvestworks, in New York, who I actually was aware of through an interview on the Cycling ’74 web site. I got tutoring from Matthew Ostrowski — and it was amazing, a complete revelation.</p></blockquote>
<p>But best of all, for folks using Max/MSP, Damian gives you a leg up, with his nice Woodpecker tool available as a free download for MIDI sequencing.</p>

<p>With laidback, exotic grooves and richly-coordinated interlaced cello, saxophone, turntable, and electronics, Archie Pelago&#8217;s music relies on some serious technological savvy. To be sure, all you really need to play instruments and computers and turntables together is to get into a room and start jamming. But to realize their specific musical vision, the trio of Hirshi, Cosmo D and Kroba have turned to an advanced Ableton Live rig, centered around The Bridge to couple Serato and Live. Here&#8217;s a look at their music &#8211; and all the gory details that combine to make their setup tick.</p>

<p>To be honest, after a lot of launch hype, it hasn&#8217;t always been easy anecdotally speaking to find a lot of people using The Bridge. The software, combining Ableton&#8217;s clip-launching facilities with Serato&#8217;s digital DJ setup, perhaps demands a lot conceptually and musically of its users. But boy, are these three using it &#8211; and pushing its envelope to the breaking point. I caught up with virtuoso cellist and technologist Greg Heffernan (Cosmo D) at the lovely Percussion Lab party in New York. Greg sends a full description on how the setup works technically, as he originally wrote for the folks at Ableton (who I imagine were quite interested). There&#8217;s a lot to follow, so happily, there&#8217;s a gear diagram, as well:</p>

<blockquote><p>To start, there are three of us.  I play cello, Zach &#8216;Kroba&#8217; Koeber plays saxophone and Dan &#8216;Hirshi&#8217; Hirshorn is on two turntables + mixer.  We play our instruments into and alongside Ableton, recording, manipulating and effecting our sounds on-the-fly.  Dan provides the rhythmic foundation for our music and because of The Bridge, all of us are in sync with each other.  </p>
<p>I&#8217;m running my cello into a MOTU Ultralite Mk3 Firewire interface, which is connected to my MacBook Pro running Ableton and Serato simultaneously.  I use a Behringer FCB1010 foot pedal (connected via an M-Audio UNO [MIDI] interface into my computer) to record clips of my cello playing, cue effects and generally navigate around the Session View of Ableton.  I record my cello live into the Session View as clips, then run these clips through an effects chain on an effects rack.  I then use the two expression pedals on the FCB1010 to crossfade between my &#8216;dry&#8217; cello sound into an effected sound.  The effects are controlled with two Korg Nano Kontrols situated below my laptop.  I also use a Korg nanoPAD to play sampled clips of various found audio.  </p>
<p>Zach&#8217;s setup mirrors mine, to an extent.  Using a mic to capture his live sax sound, he runs his signal into a Tascam US100 [audio] interface which goes his computer running Live.  He uses his FCB1010 to capture and record clips of his own, alongside a Korg nanoKONTROL to control effects.  The reason why we chose the FCB1010 and the Korg nanoKONTROL is because they&#8217;re relatively inexpensive, easy to carry around the city and on the subway, and have a lot of buttons, knobs and faders for their size.  Zach&#8217;s computer is connected to mine via an Ethernet cable and his Live set is slaved to mine via Midi Sync, so we&#8217;re always locked in the groove together.</p>
<p>The linchpin of this whole setup, however, is Serato and The Bridge.  In addition to my running Ableton, I have Serato running via a Rane SL1 [mixer] also connected to my laptop.  Coming out of my laptop is a cable going into an external monitor.  Dan uses this monitor to display Serato, enabling him to do what he does with his two turn tables, Serato control vinyls, and his  Behringer DJ Mixer.  Because of the Bridge, my Ableton rig is locked in with whatever he&#8217;s spinning, whether it be our original dubs or tunes that inspire us.  With everything sync&#8217;d up, Zach and I, through our instruments and software, react musically and rhythmically to Dan&#8217;s DJing.  Dan, via the effects on his mixer and control of his vinyl, reacts musically to us as well.</p>
<p>In terms of audio routing, my audio and Zach&#8217;s audio are running into Dan&#8217;s mixer, so he&#8217;s mixing our sounds as much as he&#8217;s controlling Serato. </p></blockquote>

<p>Global availability of music may not have silenced the usual gripes about musical quality and diversity, even if they should. But the Web is providing a place for people to share music with other music-making enthusiasts, sharing the craft of constructing it with the relish of chefs talking over drinks at the end of a long day.</p>
<p>Anyway, that&#8217;s my excuse for mentioning fellow blogger, music software developer and musician Chris Randall, again. I&#8217;ve been thoroughly enjoying the meticulously-concocted sounds of his new micronaut EP, <em>Particulate</em>. Ticking away leisurely, with thick alphaSyntauri pads set against cool, understated metrical rhythms, it&#8217;s the as though the machines themselves are enjoying a calm weekend afternoon.</p>

<p>Chris admits something I&#8217;ve been hearing increasingly in whispers among producers from a wide variety of genres &#8211; he&#8217;s getting away from the DAW. The dominant computer software model, even in more restrained incarnations like Ableton Live, still involves an overwhelming set of tools and sequencing apparatus that can get you away from, you know, actually playing your machines like instruments. Instead, Chris uses &#8220;good old-fashioned playing,&#8221; and gating from analog outputs from an Apple IIe-based sequencer. It&#8217;s nothing new (quite literally so, as the gear is from the 80s), but it&#8217;s a discipline to which I hear many producers return again and again. (I got to read them talking about it in the 80s and 90s, too, as I edited old <em>Keyboard</em> stories for an upcoming book &#8211; sometimes you have to turn the sequencers off and focus on really playing the machines. Think that bit in <em>Star Wars</em> with the flight computer.)</p>

<p>By the way, for my part, I&#8217;m also enjoying not sequencing materials. If you don&#8217;t want to go to tape, you can take the same approach in any software. Hanging out with King Britt in his studio, he tracked live playing and CV-gated sequences into Ableton Live; I&#8217;ve taken to using Propellerhead Reason (formerly Record) for the same purpose. (Hint: that absence of MIDI output? It&#8217;s not a bug, it&#8217;s a feature.)</p>
<p>All of this is relevant, as there&#8217;s a big <a href="http://trashaudio.com/2011/08/trash_audio-synth-weekend-10-los-angeles/">Synth Meet tomorrow in Los Angeles</a> put on by those connoisseurs of analog, the blog (and sometimes-artists&#8217;-collective TRASH_AUDIO. And certainly the idea of investing in all this shiny is, eventually, to actually make something resembling music with it. Chris, look forward to seeing you tomorrow.</p>

<p>The computer as bandmate is nothing new. It&#8217;s just more stable, more powerful, and friendlier than it has been ever before &#8212; and that, coupled with growing familiarity, has been making it more commonplace with artists. So just how are artists working with computers onstage when they also play instruments and sing?</p>
<p>Recent guests at New York&#8217;s Ableton Live user group have been demonstrating their own techniques for playing Live, live. They work with loops, recording, sampling, live effects, synths &#8211; all the things you&#8217;d expect &#8211; but find ways of navigating all that functionality while still playing their instrument. I was just editing interviews in which electronic artists made the opposite argument, that they preferred producing only electronic sounds with technology. But whatever your desire, you can find a playing technique to accommodate it. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s just one set of snapshots from one city &#8212; consider it the tip of a very large, very global, very diverse wave of artists getting more comfy with live laptop performance. Here&#8217;s how Cosmo D, on cello as part of the band Archie Pelago, and Erin Barra, singing and playing keys, work with software live.<span id="more-20140"></span></p>

<p>New York-based artist Cosmo D is doing some wonderful cello and laptop music. Even that&#8217;s something that&#8217;s becoming more frequent &#8211; a good thing, I think, as it means a range of artists will explore ways of working with instrument and machine.</p>
<p>In a video for our friends at <a href="http://bangbang-nyc.com/2011/08/cello-live-looping-with-cosmo-d/">the bangbang blog</a>, he demonstrates a simplified version of his set. </p>

<h3>Erin Barra</h3>

<p>On the singer side of the spectrum, Erin Barra was also a guest this year at the New York Ableton UG. She&#8217;s working on a Live setup that&#8217;s a hub of vocal performance and keys, using the computer to host chains of effects. </p>
<p>A Berklee graduate with the chops to match, Erin is a recent convert to Ableton use; her publicist tells us she just dove into the manual last summer and is working on a training certification. The musical idiom is a bit different than the kind of artists&#8217; work regularly featured on this site, but that&#8217;s further evidence that the tools aren&#8217;t genre-specific.</p>

<p>Also, in July she did the first of a writeup for a local New York production and recording outlet, Sonic Scoop, in which she talks more about production. The video is geared at novice and intermediate artists, so it walks through things gradually, step-by-step, and also reveals a bit of her approach to working with Live for vocal processing:</p>

<p>It&#8217;s great to see artists being brave and patient enough to do this kind of walkthrough. (I say that because I personally find doing screencasts to be a huge pain, though I do promise more in the future on CDM anyway!)</p>
<p>One small nit-pick: I think the Shure SM57 is very, very popular as a vocal mic!</p>

<p>Erin calls herself a &#8220;one-woman army,&#8221; and deservedly so &#8212; playing keys, singing, and operating a computer requires some serious multitasking chops, and she handles her APC with aplomb.</p>
