<p>The iPhone and iPod touch are getting more in the way of playable software instruments that could ease its transformation into a handheld idea-capturing gadget. <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/08/05/noiseio-first-synth-for-iphoneipod-touch-coming-soon-with-gestural-fm-synthesis-control/">noise.io lays claim</a> to being the first full-featured soft synth on the platform, with unusual FM synthesis control &#8211; and I still like the fact that it <em>isn&#8217;t</em> anything like most soft synths on your PC. And of course there have been beat machines like the surprisingly capable <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/06/08/intua-beatmaker-music-suite-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/">Intua BeatMaker</a> drum machine/suite. On mobile platforms, though, the more the merrier &#8211; especially given the bargain-basement prices. So I&#8217;m pleased to see the likes of noise.io and Beatmaker joined by two recent apps.</p>
<p>Released today, iSyn is a mini-suite of music apps released by online retailer AudioMIDI.com and a known quantity in soft synth design &#8212; VirSyn, makers of Tera and Cube. I&#8217;m giving this a try now, but the feature list looks impressive:</p>
<ul>
<li>Touchable drum pads, keyboard</li>
<li>Three-track sequencer: two virtual analog synth tracks, one drum track</li>
<li>Programmable virtual analog synths with tilt, X/Y pad for modulation control</li>
<li>Sample playback drum machines pre-loaded with 808, 909, synth drums, other retro kits</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#8217;s a little vanilla compared to noise.io &#8211; though the more conventional UI may be welcome to some for the same reason. It&#8217;s apparently missing the ability to use your own drum sets as on the iDrum app (with the desktop app) and Beatmaker. But it nonetheless looks promising, even a little reminiscent of the Korg DS-10 for Nintendo DS in presenting a simple combination of 2 synths and 1 kit.</p>
<p>Oh, yeah &#8212; and it&#8217;s a quite-reasonable $4.99.</p>

<h3>A Strummable Virtual Guitarist</h3>

<p>In a different vein, Star Guitar, from the makers of noise.io, simulates a guitar in software, down to passable imitation of the sound and strumming patterns. Tap the chords you want, choose a style and timbre, and Star Guitar produces accompaniment that&#8217;s more than good enough to noodle with song ideas. It could be a huge boon to songwriters, especially with mic input for iPhone and second-gen iPod touch.<span id="more-5608"></span></p>

<p>The sounds are similar to Steinberg&#8217;s Virtual Guitarist, but the developers at Amidio get the idea right: a virtual guitarist makes a lot more sense when it fits in your pocket and costs $3.99. Star Guitar is ideal for quickly sketching out an idea while laying on a hotel bed or working out a new chord progression on the bus. The strums are mechanical, to be sure, but realistic enough to get an idea flowing. A metronome means it can even become a practice tool. Not being a guitarist, I was surprised to find myself trying new ideas I might not have sitting at a piano. (But where&#8217;s the flat-13 button?)</p>

<p>And that to me is ultimately the way in which these apps start to make sense. Transposed to a mobile device, the instruments take on a different meaning, and you use them in different ways.</p>
<p>The challenge is also on to me to provide these kinds of capabilities on other mobiles. The Google Android currently lacks real-time synthesis capabilities &#8211; something that otherwise should be perfectly workable, even without a floating-point unit onboard (as on the G1). As far as I know, the Palm Pre SDK lacks these capabilities, too. Windows Mobile has long been capable of such things, but the instability of that platform, middling handset quality, and other problems have prevented breakout synth hits. So while I really like the idea of something like Android, it&#8217;ll be interesting to see if it can deliver these kinds of features. (In fairness, the iPhone didn&#8217;t even have an SDK in its early months, so we&#8217;ll see.) I raise the point only because I think there is great potential to making music way, way out of the studio.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll have some hands-on tests of these apps and a guide to actual music workflows on the iPod touch and iPhone. So here&#8217;s a question: how would you like us to cover these apps? (I&#8217;m thinking hands-on tips for actual production, rather than just some dry reviews or round-ups.) And if you could wish for any mobile music app, what would it be?</p>

<p>The idea of the Reactable is to make music tangible, with control of sound mapped to physical objects you move around on a table. But that hasn&#8217;t stopped the Psychosynth from creating a <em>virtual</em> version. (Upside: it&#8217;s a lot more portable.)</p>

<p>Watch the video, but they seem to have made the opening minutes as dull as possible to thin out the non-believers. Skip past the generation of the white noise oscillator (wow, white noise!), and somewhere around halfway through, it becomes laugh-out-loud funny, with trance-style vocals about freeing your mind with free software. (Seriously &ndash; it&rsquo;s awesome.)</p>

<p>While it&rsquo;s in alpha stage, the software is fully free and open source (binaries available for Debian and OpenSUSE) &ndash; and that means this could be a good project to snoop around in or code through, those of you who are eager hackers.</p>
<p>At its heart, it&rsquo;s simply an interactive modular synth inspired by Reactable. Drag objects around and connect them to make sounds and patterns. Underneath is a powerful C++ synth library, a 3D synth, and even a server version &ndash; so even if you aren&rsquo;t sold on this interface, there are pieces here that could be useful. It&rsquo;s all virtual now, but that&rsquo;s not to say you couldn&rsquo;t add input; support for the input library is planned later.</p>
<p>That said, I don&rsquo;t think they went far enough with the virtual thing. Next, why not simulate virtual players for the virtual Reactable inside the computer. They could even behave like Sims, requiring regular stimulation and bathroom breaks. Eventually, you could unlock <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/07/02/interactive-table-as-synth-via-new-better-bjork-tour-vids-microsoft-surface-snickering/" target="_blank">Bjork</a>.</p>

This is much more apparent on the PC end of things where there are dozens upon dozens of alternatives both in plug-in (Kontakt, HALion, DirectWave, etc) and standalone (Gigasampler, Reason&#8217;s NN-XT, etc.) forms. It&#8217;s tough for a small company to really stand out amongst such strong competition. One such company that has been trying to make a name for itself is Vember Audio, makers of the powerful Surge synthesizer and Shortcircuit sampler. Their design philosophy bucks the current market trends in virtual instruments by delivering quality products designed around the needs of sound designers rather than preset users in much the same way as Native Instruments circa 2001. Their interfaces are logical, but stripped of much of the flash that the big names have (no 3D rendered hardware-style &#8220;pots&#8221; here). Instead of focusing on huge libraries of sounds, they deliver great platforms for users to create their own sounds from scratch.</p>

<p>Yes free folks. In a move similar to Mackie&#8217;s back in 2003 when it gave Tracktion 1 away for free, and DiscoDSP&#8217;s release of Highlife as freeware last year Vember Audio is releasing as freeware their now aging version 1 in an effort to generate buzz for the forthcoming version 2 (the beta of which is available for free as well).</p>
<p>This is not crippleware. This is the same full version of Shortcircuit 1.1.2 that used to go for $139 just a few days ago. Check the specs:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;m a bit behind the eight ball &#8230; uh &#8230; Rubik&#8217;s Cube &#8230; on this one, but I think it is worth pointing to the arcane awesomeness of code artist Douglas Edric Stanley. Douglas solves a problem that has plagued humanity since the diabolical creation of the Rubik&#8217;s Cube: how can we play with this fun-to-move cube of blocks without having to (augh) actually match up all the colors? (Okay, maybe that problem only plagued me. Or didn&#8217;t really plague me, as I&#8217;d just fiddle around with the Rubik&#8217;s Cube and make interesting patterns.)</p>
<p>The answer: make a three-dimensional step sequencer using the Cube.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m not sure I personally need a Rubik&#8217;s Cube interface, but I love the idea of three-dimensional sequencers, much as I enjoyed the (preposterous) notion of three-dimensional chess on Star Trek. (Side note. Spock, I suspect, would be equally unbeatable in a live P.A. set with a 1024&#215;1024 three-dimensional <a href="http://monome.org">Monome</a> Cube.)</p>

<p>Mr. Rubik himself is equally fascinating &#8212; a Hungarian architect, engineer, interior designer, and sculptor who went back to academia, then started making games. Apparently, he&#8217;s now turning to architecture and digital games, meaning he can make us feel stupid all over again in a new medium. (Seriously, I&#8217;d love to see what Rubik&#8217;s Video Game studio turns out; as you&#8217;ll see, the Rubik&#8217;s Cube is just one of many brain twisters.)</p>

<p>Second Life is one of those things I might try out one of these days, except that I&#8217;m quite busy with my first, second, third, and fourth lives at the moment. I&#8217;m surprised that while Tom at <a href="http://www.slboutique.com/index.php?p=buy&#038;cat=92&#038;phrase=Audio">Music thing</a> catches on to music gear sales in the virtual community, he misses out on all the synths. Search &#8220;synth&#8221; on the <a href="http://www.slboutique.com/index.php">SLBoutique</a>, and you&#8217;ll find lots of classic gear rendered in 3D form. Seen recently:</p>

<p>Tom also points in an update to the virtual studio featured last year on the Second Life blog <a href="http://secondslog.blogspot.com/2005/11/fear-of-music.html">SLOG</a>. Now the bad news: a lot of this gear is entirely virtual. It&#8217;s just 3D eye candy, a la the Sims, with the disturbing requirement of having to actually pay real money for it. (Money for a non-functional 3D virtual mock-up of a virtual synth? What?) At best, you&#8217;ll get an <I>animation</i> of someone playing the synth.</p>

<p>Naturally, this gets my gears turning. While <a href="http://secondslog.blogspot.com/2005/11/fear-of-music.html">SLOG can only dream of General MIDI integration</a> (oh &#8230; boy &#8230; wouldn&#8217;t that &#8230; be fun), I&#8217;m thinking about a virtual 3D world that can transmit and receive OSC data and simple audio streams. Second Life can at least do the audio end, but 3D worlds that allow you to control real music sources while in the virtual space could add more dimension. Search CDM for <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/index.php?s=quake">Quake</a> and <a href="http://createdigitalmusic.com/tag/unreal/">Unreal</a> and you&#8217;ll see some other examples. Second Life, as much as the kids today may love it, may not be the best environment for that.</p>
<p>Second Life is becoming a major international community for music, and Ableton&#8217;s David Cross wondered in an email to me the other day if perhaps this would extend from communities of listeners to user groups and communities of music makers. The synths might all be eye candy, but there are free spaces with concerts and chances to experience music &#8212; a lot more interesting, as far as net music, than staring at a QuickTime stream. That&#8217;s made me wonder, for those of you who do have time for a Second Life, has anyone found interesting communities or resources in SL? Or is it really just hype, and there&#8217;s a better alternative virtual community? Let us know.</p>
